Travelers checks are no longer worth the bother for domestic travel imo. We recently took a 3-week road trip that extended into Canada. We put everything on CCs except for some tips (one for valet parking and a few for hotel housekeeping--less than $15 total). Cash is becoming almost unnecessary.

If you want to raise their interest in the importance and use of money, quit buying "extras" for them except for gifts at holidays and birthdays. My personal formula combines cost with inconvenience. Sorry, but it is a proprietary formula and very flexible so I can't be more specific. I am fully invested, so my truck is stalled.

If it were running, I would wait until stocks were screaming bargains rather that simply cheaper than they used to be before I would even think of shifting the truck into reverse.
