I can remember back in the mid 80's in my early twenties and opened my first IRA, one of my buddies was befuddled on why I would worry about retirement at such a young age. He is currently a teacher with a pension that is under 70% funded currently.

I was 100% equity holder until June of last year, I moved 25% of my portfolio into Vanguard total Bond and Vanguard long term treasuries and have been ecstatic with these so far. Total Bond fund is up 2% since December 31st and LT treasuries is up almost 9% already as of today since Jan 1.

Yes, I currently rebalance with bi-monthly 401k contributions, but the 10% pullback happened so quickly and was over. I normally stay all in on the market, so the only available cash on a quick pullback would be my bond fund.

am currently up 3% mostly because I went from a 100% equity portfolio to a 75/25 portfolio in early June. Bonds have really helped stabilize my bottom line during this pullback.

company matches 100% up to 15% of our pay for 401k, mostly admiral and institutional Vanguard index funds. Bond funds consist of PIMCO real and total funds at .46% ER, so I dont buy bonds through my 401k.

Sigh, yes, that's what I get for using my computer calculator and not my 10-key. However, my question stands....isn't $3,000/quarter on $500,000 still a yearly payout of about 2.5%? yes sir, you are correct. I bought a bunch of shares of the Vanguard total bond market about 10 days before the end of May, do I get May's dividend? or do I have to have a full month before I get a dividend? I have yet to recieve a dividend in my Scottrade account.
