Re: Buying OTC Stocks With VBS

Step 4) At Vanguard, initiate a transfer of the OTC stock shares out of Fidelity to Vanguard. You’d be lucky to get a broker who allows trades in otc stocks to accept an inbound transfer, and I seriously doubt vanguard would take an otc transfer in (but I guesss never say never when it comes to vanguard customer service incompetence - they could do it by mistake). The regulators have been hassling brokerages so much most of them won’t take the stocks this way at all, even if they’ll let you buy the exact same stock yourself at their brokerage! That tells you how dumb things have gotten. Too much “compliance risk” and too many fines by the regulators for some perceived lack of oversight or retroactive failure to scrutinize some bad actor th...

Not everyone put the regulators’ unenforceable wishes ahead of their obligations to customers, as we can see with Fidelity, Etrade, and Schwab/TD still offering otc stock trading (albeit somewhat more limited than they had previously). Only Vanguard banned buying in nearly all otc stocks.

And I don’t buy it was a coincidence that 2-3 years ago many brokers started cracking down on otc market access, just as the SEC invented some new classification that made it even harder for retail investors to access many otc stocks (“expert market”). This SEC change destroyed large amounts of liquidity and value in the otc universe. I suspect the regulators who pushed for it are happy about it and they found some brokers like Vanguard happy to have an excuse to dump their customer support duties.

Re: Buying OTC Stocks With VBS

At first, a number of years ago, they stopped allowing OTC stock purchases on their website, but I could still buy them if I called in. But now I don't believe they will even allow that anymore. Here is my issue: I would like to purchase shares in my local bank. They are a very sound, solid company that has served our community for over 70 years. But it's a "microcap" and, therefore traded on the OTC. It is NOT a "penny stock" as it is currently trading for around $27. I don't think it's fair for Vanguard - or any broker, really, to refuse to allow someone to make their own investment decisions. The way I see it, if it's traded on the OTC or even if it is a "penny stock", if an investor does his homework and f...

Another month has passed and a lot has happened in the markets. The AI / semiconductor sector remains the hot new thing, as SMCI (+225%) and NVDA (+67%) are leading the pack of big winners. The former was recently added to the S&P500 and the latter surpassed a $2T valuation making it the 3rd most valuable US stock after Apple and Microsoft. Crypto fortunes were made and lost and made again, with the recent new highs in bitcoin (breaking $70k/coin) pushing crypto related stocks such as Microstrategy (MSTR) and Coinbase (COIN) to new highs. As an investor, you only get to take the margin interest expense as a deduction on schedule A (traders have better options via Sch C). That may only partially offset the capital gain income that you would receive on schedule D due to the standard deduction and phase outs.

At least you had net gains!

Background: After conducting trend analysis, I've devised a model indicating that when a stock's price drops by x%, it's an opportunity to buy and then sell it for a profit of y%. Challenge: On average, the model suggests about five buy/sell transactions daily, with four usually proving accurate, while one ends up being incorrect. However, the challenge is that this inaccurate transaction turns the day's profit into a net loss. Your ideas intrigue me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter ;). Sounds like you should do the opposite of the five transactions. You should sell short when it says to buy, or buy when it says to sell. Then, even though four of them lose a small amount of money, last one will make up for it and you’ll end up p...

As a final note, admissions rates have gone down over time in large part because students apply to more schools. So the difficulty of getting into [insert specfiic school] may be higher than getting into any school in a given category. Good post, thanks. As for your comment above, I think the standardized application process and trend towards “winner take all” top finance / tech companies has raised the stakes and difficulty of getting into a top tier school for students these days. A surge in applicants has made it hard for colleges to find the best ones reliably (limited time and resources to review each applicant, interview some, etc), which combined with rampant grade inflation and anti-meritocratic efforts like optional or banned SAT ...

It's the start of February, nearly 1 month into our contest, and here are the current standings: Current Standings - 2024 hedge fund contest We've already seen a number of upsets. Early on, GoldenFinch's biotech pick SPRT quickly gained +17% on promising earnings and results, and remains at those levels. This wasn't enough to hold onto the lead, however. Briefly the crypto-related enthusiasm ahead of the approval of Bitcoin ETFs had a number of those related stocks (Coinbase, MicroStrategy, Riot Blockchain etc) reaching new highs and taking the mantle. This was short lived, as the Bitcoin approval turned out to be a "sell the news" event (and a bit of a fiasco too with the SEC getting hacked and putting out some fake news on their...

It would make sense to replace the benchmark with the actual index. Is there a ticker symbol for it? If so, consider using that instead of VTI - which we're using as a proxy for the index. Google search for "s&p 500" suggests "INDEXSP: .INX" might work. It's what Google is using to display the S&P 500 in the search results. I’m not sure this is currently true. I looked around for some of the best transfer bonuses and they were in the 0.3-0.5% range, and required a 1 year hold. That’s less than the 0.6% a year from RobinHood, even without this RobinHood deal locking in the higher 0.6% rate for the next five years. Surely that’s not true and the fair value of HOOD is nearly $10B since that’s what the market price says. I chalk it up to this board being a very conservative and self selected groups that believes in market efficiency. The prospect that people other than them might earn an extra 0.6% alpha per year for doing a bit of paperwork strikes them as impossible, in the same way it’s impossible to beat the market - “you must be taking a bunch of risks you don’t understand and hoping to get lucky”. The stupid part is he’s 100% in the right, has and provided the documentation to prove it, and every IRS person he can get on the phone agrees with him and says they’ve noted the account nothing is due, but somehow they can’t close the issue and the collection arm keeps hassling him. You can put $2k/year/child into an Educational Savings Account (ESA). They are like 529s for education, Roth style. Smaller limits, but can be more easily used, including for pre-college education and associated costs, and you can buy any stock or ETF you want. Most brokers offer them.

https://www.savingforcollege.com/coverdell-esas
https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Coverde ... s_Accounts

Compared to a UTMA, they’re smaller but tax free. Seems like an easy first place for some funds before you do a UTMA and have to worry about kiddie taxes. Deadlines are like IRAs, you can do last year until April and then more for this year now.

Basically you can say "sell" (or "cover") any time you'd like, and you'll get the next 4pm ET market closing price after the time you post. So if you post during the day before 4pm (or the prior day after 4pm), you'll get today's closing price. If you post after 4pm today (or tomorrow until 4pm), you'll get tomorrow's closing price. Yes, but it forces you to predict the next market close vs. selling based on the most recent (last) market close. If the price is volatile, this could work against you. Defining a window to sell after market close (and before it opens the next day) would allow one to use a known price. This approach makes more sense to me. Up to you. No, I can't do that. There can be after hours news like ea...

You can only pick 3 stocks to be long. Let me know which (up to) 3 are your favorites. You can also pick up to 3 stocks to be short if you wish.

Bitfarms (BITF) is Canadian based and hence is not included in our Russell 3000 index. Please pick another long if you wish.

ReShape Lifescience (RSLS) is not in the Russell 3000 and is nowhere close! They currently have only a $3M market cap, and while I appreciate your bearish sentiment, you'll have to pick a different short or leave that slot empty.

PS I'd bet on RILY rather than against them personally, all the short selling noise notwithstanding, but I guess we'll find out by the end of the year who's right.

Sorry, but GigaCloud Technology (GCT) is not in the Russell 3000. I think their market cap was too low early last year (but is up a lot since!). Please make a different selection if you want to enter the contest.

TENAYA THERAPEUTICS - TNYA
LHC Group - I think you meant this one, LHCG, but they were bought by UnitedHealth last year (UNH). You could pick a different long or UNH if you'd like or leave that slot empty.

Sierra Oncology (SRRA) - they were bought by GSK in 2022(!) and are no longer a separate company or stock. Please choose a different stock to short if you'd like.

RCII changed their name to Unbound Group and now use the ticker UPBD. I'll update that ticker but that pick is fine otherwise.

Re: 2024 Hedge Fund contest

Here are the contest guidelines, same format as in previous years. ... No trades during the year, except that you can elect at any time during normal exchange business hours to "freeze" a price for any individual position at that day's closing price, i.e. liquidate any position. (Each position carries this option; you can choose to freeze different positions on different days.) Other than that, you're stuck with what you choose for the year. ... I don't quite understand what this means. Why does a position need to be frozen during normal exchange business hours, which I assume is 9:30 AM to 4 PM Eastern? IOW, post a "freeze my position" during this time only. I'll update that, it was legacy language from the prior conte...
