+5.57% ytd. A tiny stake in an asset that is banned from this forum and which I considered to be play money and had given up for dead, is roaring back to life and is pulling up the entire portfolio (or at least adding 1.49% to the return). If I removed that asset, my return would be in line with the return of Life Strategy Growth (4.08% ytd).

Re: half high income physician, half financial illiterate
If you’re going to live in a VHCOL you might as well buy a house instead of rent, given your income is high enough to cash flow the mortgage. The reason is that houses in VHCOL seem to appreciate faster gaining you more equity. Thats been my experience anyway, living in Los Angeles. Our house here has doubled in value over the last 7 years. Not sure why your house in Seattle didn’t appreciate that much over the last few years. Buying a house too soon is what got them into this mess The problem is not that he bought a house. The problem is he bought a $2.3 million house on a $550k income. Hi OP,
Fellow physician here.
You are working Telehealth yet live in a very HCOL. Why not move to a LCOL area?
I assume you are a radiologist (a specialty which is suited to Telehealth and still command high incomes).

Re: Where does the loyalty to Vanguard come from?
It seems that there is certain level of loyalty from this community to Vanguard and I wonder why? Initially Vanguard was known to have low fees but now Fidelity, Schwab and other have even lower fees. "low fee" is pretty much the only thing that Vanguard has and they are poor in pretty much every other way. Fidelity for example has much better customer service and technology (app and website). Please Fidelity doesn't make value judgement for you and tell you what you can and can't invest in. Why are people still using Vanguard? I moved everything to Fidelity and it is so much better! My biggest winners have been Vanguard funds (Capital Opportunity and Health Care) over the past 20 years. Got 7 figures between those 2 funds alone....

Isn’t a job that throws off a regular income during a 30 year career bond-like in characteristic ? So during those 30 years, doesn’t it make sense to balance this with a heavy dose of equities? In fact, I kind of regret I didn’t do this early on. As a physician with a wife who is also a physician, I started out of residency in 1996 with a 60/40 allocation and vowed to keep that allocation forever. I mistakenly thought I was correctly diversified when in reality my portfolio was as too conservative. I didn’t factor in our human capital. We should have stepped on the gas and put 100% in equities since our incomes were and are rock stable, providing the ballast that bonds were supposed to provide during tough times. OP, Great post and great insights. Thank you for your effort. What stock index did you use in your calculations? If possible, would you please re-do the calculations using a global stock index? Might also be interesting to see how an all-stock Japanese investor would have fared. If I understand you correctly, the 2000 retiree who was 100% in equities during his/her career for the 30 years prior and then retired in 2000 would have amassed a massive portfolio that even a 50% haircut during the dot com crash would have put him still far ahead of the 60/40 investor who also retired in 2000. In other words, they both didn't start with an equal $1 million in 2000 at the onset of retirement. The all stock investor may already have amassed $5 milli...

Does posting on an anonymous forum full of strangers, declaring that you have your financial jewels stored in this Excel file in Google drive make you even more vulnerable? Haven’t you just disclosed the fact that such accounts even exist in the first place? Is it possible some unsavory characters reading this forum can find a way to identify you and then link you to your excel file? Not saying that will happen, just curious to know how safe it is to openly talk about this on an anonymous forum.

Re: How to buy a car when there are none
We bought a new Lexus NX 350 (2023) premium package last week as my wife’s commuter car. OTD price was $56k. This has the turbo four engine with 22/29 mpg. We had wanted a hybrid but there was none available I can find via Truecar. The sales guy checked other dealerships in our region (we’re in LA), no hybrids anywhere. The dealer said he can order one but will take about 3 months to get here and he will charge me a $5k mark up. No thanks, the gas savings I would have gotten from the hybrid will be negated by that markup. The regular NX was also supposed to have a $5k markup but I persuaded the dealer to remove that and he agreed. Paid cash at MSRP. Financing it would have cost me 6% interest. Prior to buying the NX, we cross shopped at the...

Re: Advice for student looking at psychology careers?
I’m an MD here in Los Angeles. There’s huge demand for mental health professionals here. I am an internist and refer a lot of patients to psychiatrists. The psychiatrists are fully booked for months. My back up are the mental health counselors (people with master’s degrees in marital and family therapy or LCSWs) and they are fully booked as well. Hard to get appointments for my patients. I end up prescribing psych meds to my patients while waiting for them to be seen by the mental health therapists.
So at least here in LA and possibly the whole state of CA, a mental health career is a viable career path.

You can’t count on online access per my experience. My 529 1099-q was not e-delivered despite my preset instructions. Not only that, the 529 account link from where I would have been able to download the form as in past years had vanished. I had drained the balance to zero last year, but the link should still have been available for viewing historical balances and transactions, yes? Thanks for your help. I’ve checked all those folders and the 529 tax forms are nowhere to be found. There used to be a link to the 529 account which would open up in a pop up window. That’s gone. There’s no way to view past balances at certain dates.
I actually received the paper copy of the 1099-Q by regular mail from Vanguard but I wanted the downloadable version to save directly into my computer instead of having to scan the paper version.

Where to find old Vanguard 529 account link
Hi Bogleheads, need your help. Where do I find a link to the Vanguard Nevada 529 account that has been closed? I’m trying to download the Form 1099-Q for 2022. I withdrew the entire balance of the 529 last year to pay for child’s tuition. The link used to be included under Balance and Holdings. Since the account is now closed, Vanguard removed the link to the 529 account and now I can’t find it.
Thanks in advance.

Using the CPI inflation calculator, if you plug in say $5 million for December 2022, it’s the same as having $1 million in 1977.
So if you have a $5 million net worth today, can you claim that you became a millionaire in 1977 when you were probably not even born yet?
I know it’s a silly way of looking at it, just putting it out there as food for thought.

Yes my portfolio did beat the index, but my index (or benchmark) is the Life Strategy growth fund. Life Strategy Growth lost 17%. My portfolio (with a similar 80:20 stock-bond allocation as LS Growth) dropped "only" 16%. I have a slight value tilt (using VTV and VBR) as well as an overweight in VHT (health care index as well as VGHCX, the active fund). Also own only short term bonds. This allocation was the result of inertia rather than deliberate positioning of assets at the start of the year. The value tilt is a carry over from the 2000s. So are the health care funds. I would have done better had I not also owned a large chunk of other legacy positions VUG and VHCOX (Capp opportunity), which, while long term winners, were absolu...

My stock to bond allocation is similar to Life Strategy Growth (80:20) but my portfolio has a slight value tilt (VTV and VBR). Also have a significant chunk of VHT (health care). My bond funds are all short term. This composition may have limited the damage. Still, it was not a good year.

The 70 your old with $1m can likely afford a 4% withdrawal rate. The 30 yr old likely can’t. Hence the former is financially better off than the latter.

Wait for rates to peak before investing in stocks??
The Fed has telegraphed that it will raise fed funds rates to 4.5 - 5% over the next several months into 2023.
If you have cash right now that you want to invest into equities, is it appropriate to wait till the fed hits the target rate before dumping the cash into stocks? That way, equities would even be cheaper at that point than they are today since presumably investors will be selling stocks all the way down during the whole rate raising campaign.
While this is market timing, it is based on the Feds declared rate raising timetable, and therefore reasonably predictable.

Re: Umbrella Insurance for Child
Umbrella policies provide financial and defense coverage when an insured person is alleged to be liable for death, personal injury or property damage to another. If your daughter is named on your umbrella policy as an insured person and she is driving a vehicle named on your policy as an insured vehicle, then that coverage applies to her as well. Umbrella policies do not insure your assets, however, the practical effect of umbrella insurance is to provide enough financial coverage to forestall an injured party from coming after one's assets, if the amount of the judgment exceeds the policy limits then the injured party can attempt to collect from the responsible party's assets or income. In other words, as a named insured living in a cover...

Our 23 yo daughter is a full time graduate student who lives with us here in Los Angeles. We pay her tuition and living expenses. She drives one of our cars. She has a taxable brokerage account worth $150k. We have umbrella insurance of $6 million, annual premium of $1.5k. My daughter is named as one of the drivers of our car in our auto insurance policy. Would we (parents) and my daughter be better off if she bought her own auto insurance policy and umbrella insurance policy? The umbrella policy will protect her $150k net worth. Right now, if she were liable for an accident, we the parents will be on the hook since she drives our car, but this risk is mitigated by our umbrella and auto insurance policies. How about if your will and trust documents are in password-protected digital format, and you give a copy of that to your power of attorney? Is that a valid form of storage, or do the documents have to be hard copy?

Re: Ioniq5/Ev6
Ignoring price for the moment and just focusing on features and build quality, would you buy the Ioniq5 over a Tesla model 3 or Y?

Re: Ioniq5/Ev6
We bought an Ioniq 5 a few months ago. We previously had a Nissan Leaf, so we were used to BEVs. So far we love it. We got the SEL AWD, and glad we got the dual motor -- you can run it in eco mode on just the rear which is like the RWD, but the dual motor in standard/sport mode is much peppier and fun to drive. Interior is simple but functional and easy to live with. We mostly use Apple Play, but the Hyundai infotainment system seems easy to use. Was tempted for the limited edition, but they're really hard to find and markups were pretty high. Mostly cosmetic differences with the EV6 (same common platform), but we liked the Ioniq 5 interior better -- a little more room and pretty understated. We're in Oregon, and have pretty good access to...

Ioniq5/Ev6
Hi. I’ve been reading and watching YouTube reviews of these new electric cars from Hyundai/Kia. The reviews have been mostly positive. The Ioniq5 in fact got Car and Driver’s EV of the Year award.
I’m interested to hear reviews from those in the Boglehead community who have bought and/or driven these cars. What are your impressions?

Re: New Car Dealer Mark Ups
What we’ve done before was to buy the outgoing model for cheap. Example, in January 2021 we bought an Acura MDX 2021 which was the last model of its generation. It had only 9 miles on the odometer. The MSRP was 55k, but we got it for 42k OTD. The dealer was clearing their inventory to make way for the 2022 iteration of the MDX, hence the discount. With respect to Lexus, the 2023 RX 350 will becoming out end of this year. Am not sure if Lexus dealers will be discounting the outgoing 2022 Rxs, like Acura did for the MDX. Local dealer is still asking $5k over MSRP for 450h. They will sell the 350 at MSRP. That’s too bad. The hybrids are in high demand. I’m not currently in the market for another car for another 2-3 years but my next one will ...

New Car Dealer Mark Ups
I went to the Lexus dealership yesterday for routine maintenance on my car. Went to the showroom while waiting for the work to be done. I was shocked to see the all cars on display had a $5k markup!
Is this now the norm? Are all dealers and car brands doing this?

Re: How much debt is OK in retirement?
For those of you who have the means (in a taxable account) to pay off the mortgage but choose to keep it due to low rates, how do you plan to eventually pay it off? Would you at some point in the future pay it off as a lump sum? How do you minimize capital gains taxes when liquidating the taxable account for the payoff? We are in this situation. Bought a house in Los Angeles in 2017 which at that time was worth $1 million. We could have paid cash but decided to take a 30 year fixed mortgage with 20% downpayment to take advantage of the low rate (3.6% which was the lowest jumbo rate in 2017). The other reason for taking the mortgage at that time was that the $1million in taxable had a lot of embedded capital gains from years of compounding. ...
