After he dies, it will be considered an inheritance and no federal estate tax will be due unless his estate exceeds the limit.

However, his home state may have a much lower ceiling upon which estate taxes are assessed. You need to check his home state rules.

I am not sure. But even if he has to file form 709, there will be no tax due unless he expects to have more than $11.18 MM (adjusted for inflation) if he dies before 2026.

Here is my opinion. Since the secondary owner doesn't have ownership rights as a co-owner, I will not file form 709.

I assume that your father's bonds are paper, not electronic ones. Right? To change anything on a paper bond, he will need to open a TreasuryDirect account and the newly reissued bonds can only be in electronic form. In addition, there is no such a thing as a co-owner for electronic bonds. The choice...

You missed my point.

Vanguard's 2FA system is too primitive. Its competitors have much more flexible 2FA options for "all kinds" of people.

The main reason Vanguard still has my business is because of my admiration for Mr. Bogle. I would not have tolerated someone else in a similar situation.

In another thread, someone reported that Vanguard let him opt out of security code sending and an IT person had to be involved.

Maybe it is possible to not accept the marching order for security code.

I just recalled what my mother used to do to speed up the ripening of mangoes.

She put green mangoes into a big bowl of uncooked rice and close the lid. I think mangoes released some kind of gas in a closed rice container and the gas may have expedited the ripening. It worked.

First, don't buy any that is hard as a rock.

Second, trust your nose more than your hands. A ripe mango gives out nice aroma unless it is rotten. You have a higher chance of having a mango go bad while waiting if you start out with a very green one.

Do you do your own taxes or do you have an accountant?

We used to receive requests from banks asking for clients' 2-3 years of tax returns (with clients' written authorization of course). For some reason, banks did not trust the copies provided by mortgage applicants.

I have gotten free credit reports from all three companies since the freeze.

No problems getting the reports. And it is so comforting to see the phrase of security freeze on each report.
