Re: House - leaking chimney - thoughts?

I didn't read all the replies but have just gone through chimney repair work and thought I'd pass on some info. Make sure you have a chimney professional, as opposed to a contractor assess the cause. We did just that with two different chimney pros and we're comforted by their identical diagnosis'. ...

Re: Bank of America Rewards Credit Cards - Worth it?

We have both cards as well. Applied a couple of months apart. We are also Platinum preferred, so 2.65 points for every dollar spent on the travel card and use the Cash rewards card for groceries(including Sam's)and gas only for the 3.5 and 5.25 % cashback (respectively). They have worked flawlessly ...

I'm curious. Why would you self insure? A catastrophic illness could wipe out those retirement assets.

Re: Federal Blue Cross Standard versus Basic

We used to be BCBS standard and switched to Basic once both on Medicare(obviously not your situation). Have you looked at the cost differences between the two policies for ER visits, in patient per day charges and certain labs. As I recall they add up quicker for Basic than Standard. Once Medicare b...

Re: Types of Assets HNWI Boomers Own

I fit into your definition, but only a few of your assumptions are true for us. No second home(personal preference-we prefer to rent a home in a warm climate for a few months during winter rather than own) If by mutual funds you include ETF's then that describes us(with the exception of a few indivi...

Re: Why should FEHB members buy Medicare Part B?

Enkidu; I have not read all of the responses so I don't know if anyone else has posted the same information. DH and I are 67/69. DH retired from the Government-CSRS. We had always carried BCBS Standard Self and Family. We analysed the same info for the same reasons that you raise, but for us it was ...

Very odd that you would ask how you are doing but not provide crucial information with which to render a judgement. I have no idea how you are doing.

Re: Ex-CSRS Federal Employee Query about re-employment

CSM; I also was a federal employee. My dates of service were from 1976 to 1982. I recently began to wonder if I had taken my pension out of the system. I could not remember. I wrote to OPM to inquire. It took several months for them to respond. Their reply informed me that I had taken my pension out...

Re: Ex-CSRS Federal Employee Query about re-employment

Also CSM, did you see this quote from the OPM website: "Redeposit Service Ending before March 1, 1991 and Covered by CSRS You can repay the refund you received for periods of civilian service ending before March 1, 1991 during which retirement deductions were withheld from your pay and later refunde...

Re: Ex-CSRS Federal Employee Query about re-employment

I have some experience with this. Two colleagues of my DH left govt service about the same time that DH did. All three (including DH) were CSRS. His two colleagues took their pensions out. I don't know what the amounts were, but if my DH had taken his out(he was a GS-14 with 18 years of service), he...

Re: You can lead a horse to water... [Giving financial advic

Zabar; your desire to help your friends is understandable and admirable, but as you have noticed no one one has sited any concrete stories of success in helping a friend to "see the light". I would suggest that it happens rarely if ever. The LBYM concept is as simple as it gets. Even the most unfami...
