Re: Denver Meetup - Spring 2015
I left the poll open for two weeks, which I think is more than enough. 15 folks responded in total. The date/time that worked for the largest number of folks (10) is Sunday May 24th at 2pm. I'll revise the initial post and thread title accordingly.
10 people might be pushing it a bit for a Starbucks. I'll try to think of some other options. However, for those of you planning to attend, please chime in with any ideas/suggestions.
Lastly, as a reminder, if there are specific topics you want to discuss, please respond as well. I am happy to organize some research and speak to those topics if that would be helpful.

Update 2: We will be meeting at the Castlewood Library (Arapahoe Library District) in the Castlewood Conference Room. The address is 6739 S Uinta St., Centennial, CO 80112 ( Google Map ). Thank you to Denver Boglehead member Sunil for making the reservation! Update 1: Based on the poll results, the next meetup will be Sunday May 24th at 2pm. The location is still TBD, but will be somewhere near central Denver. Hi Denver Bogleheads, It looks like there is interest in scheduling another Denver meetup and we are certainly overdue since our last meeting was February 2014. With that in mind, if you would like to attend please click the link below to let me know what date(s)/time(s) work for you: http://doodle.com/95snipgqc8bzymp4 The location w...

After reviewing the Doodle, it looks like Sunday February 9th at Noon local/MST is the winner. I know that several of you who responded are unavailable at that time, but unfortunately we had a wide range of responses.
I will create a new thread to announce the meeting. In the meantime, what kinds of topics do people want to cover?

OldTimer - Great idea. I think a few times a year is perfect. Let's discuss at the meeting.
I am traveling internationally right now, so haven't been online as much lately. We have received a good number of responses to the Doodle, though.
I'll leave it out there for a bit longer and then we can settle on a time. Right now, Sunday February 9th is in the lead.

Hi all,
I apologize that I haven't responded to any of the last couple posts. I forgot to subscribe to this thread and haven't been on the local chapters forum much.
Anyway, I've received several messages about doing another Denver meeting. I'll post a new topic shortly to try to get feedback on when a good time would be to do a meeting.

Re: "Fundamentals matter" but they are not determinant.
In my opinion, the evidence on valuation is crystal clear: It is a fool's errand to attempt to time the market using CAPE (or any other valuation metric). [Just because you can see a cliff, doesn't mean you are driving straight over it.] However, it is highly useful in managing expectations and making planning decisions. [You should be more aware and more cautious when making decisions if a cliff is in sight.] For example, think about the following: Assuming valuations are at elevated levels, would it not be wise to answer the following questions differently than if valuation levels were much lower? 1) I would greatly prefer to retire today (with a portfolio of about 20-25x my annual spending needs), but would be willing to work another 3-5...

Re: Is there a disadvantage to using one 529 for 2 kids?
One really important factor to keep in mind regarding 529s is how FAFSA/financial aid is calculated. You mentioned grandparents, which is a perfect example of this.
A 529 plan that is held by a grandparent is not counted in the FAFSA calculation until the money is actually used (and then it is only counted in the following year's calculation). For that reason, it is best to use grandparent 529 assets toward the final year of college first and then go from there. That is, assuming, your goal is to obtain the highest amount of financial aid possible.

Fellow Denver Bogleheads: I sincerely apologize that I was not able to make it to the meeting that I, myself, coordinated on Saturday. I had an unexpected emergency come up related to some renovation work that was being done on my home and I could not break away from it.
I hope those of you that did attend were able to have an insightful and productive meeting. For those of you that did make it, could you do me a favor and chime in with some thoughts and/or a summary of the meeting? It would be great to get some feedback and develop ideas for future meetings. Once again, I do apologize for not being able to make the meeting.

Re: Denver Bogleheads Meetup - Saturday February 9th
Happy Super Bowl Sunday to everyone! Not many have chimed in regarding location, so I guess I'll make the executive decision:
Starbucks at REI
1416 Platte St
Denver, CO 80202
Parking is free at REI.
I understand that certain locations will be favorable for some vs. others, but hopefully everyone should be able to get to and find this Starbucks very easily. It is right off of the 25 inside the huge REI. I look forward to seeing you all there next Saturday!

Re: Denver Bogleheads Meetup - Saturday February 9th
Thanks everyone for responding. It looks like we should have at least 6 or 7 of us in attendance. In terms of what a meeting looks like, in the past when I coordinated the Los Angeles group we did several things: - We made it into a pseudo book club. Picked a title at the first meeting (first book was Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely) and then everyone read it on their own before the second meeting. That made for some great conversation at the next meetup. - I would also suggest we pick some topics that would be highly relevant to our group and then have one or two people present on them at the next meeting. Could be anything from investment ideas to person finance to strategies for traveling on a budget. If anyone has other ideas, plea...

Updated! Denver Meetup Sat. Feb. 9 @ 3PM at Starbucks REI
UPDATED WITH LOCATION I received quite a few emails from Denver-area Bogleheads over the holidays, so I think it is due time to schedule a meetup. The majority of folks expressed a preference for a weekend meeting. However, I'm sure many of you are diehard Broncos fans and will be watching the playoffs closely. So I thought it might make sense to plan for a date after the Super Bowl. Similarly, I know many of you are coming from outside of Denver, so a February date will hopefully give you time to get your calendar in order. With that in mind, let's plan to meet on: Saturday February 9th at 3:00pm Starbucks at REI 1416 Platte St Denver, CO 80202 Also, if you are planning to come, please reply to this thread so I can get an idea of how many...

Re: Luck What Is It Good For?
I recently finished Mauboussin's book and I would highly recommend it as well. The world is a complex place and all too often we draw simplified conclusions based solely on singular outcomes (ignoring the fact that alternative outcomes were not only possible, but potentially very likely). The result is a host of behavioral biases and sub-optimal decisions. Although the book is clearly relevant to many areas of life and business (far beyond investing), the following quote from the book should serve as a reminder to Bogleheads that their chosen path is the right one : "In activities where luck plays a strong role, the focus must be on process. Where skill dominates, performance is a dependable barometer of progress. But where luck is a s...

Re: CFA and CIPM Programs
...it's as much a test of endurance as it is a test of knowledge... I would add (and this is something that I always tell people who ask me about the process) that studying for a CFA exam is as much about discipline as it is about accumulating knowledge. If you aren't prepared to put in the time (200 hours on the low end and 350 on the high end), make sacrifices in your social life, and forgo March Madness at least twice, CFA is not for you! I used to study nearly 7 days a week. During the week I studied 45 minutes to an hour during lunch and 1-2 hours at night. And then on the weekend, I put in 5-10 hours minimum. This was in addition to a full-time job that required working a lot more than 40 hours a week. I never try to scare people off...

Re: CFA and CIPM Programs
I can speak to the CFA program and would be happy to answer any specific questions that you might have. However, I can't speak to the CIPM program (or compare/contrast it with the CFA program, other than to tell you what you could already read on your own here: http://www.cfainstitute.org/cipm/Pages/index.aspx ). That said, this is why I elected to do the CFA program: 1) I had/have a genuine interest in the subject matter/curriculum. I don't recommend the CFA program for anyone with a "casual" or "passing" interest. It is not that type of exam. 2) I concluded that the benefit vs. cost relationship was very favorable for several reasons: a) At the time I started studying for Level I, I had more time than money. I was also...

I am interested in an in-person/local meetup for the same reason that I read this forum: To exchange ideas and share experiences (successes and failures) with others who subscribe to a similar investment approach.
If you've got the entire investment world figured out, then you probably don't need this forum, and you certainly don't need to come to a local meeting.

Los Angeles Bogleheads Meetup - September 24th at 10:00 AM
Saturday September 24, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Location: Starbucks in Torrance (same as the past 3 meetings). Our last meeting was in March, so I think we're due to get together again! No specific agenda, but given all the recent volatility, I think it would be helpful to discuss: - Sticking to your asset allocation - Rebalancing to manage risk - Optimizing asset location (401k, 403b, 457, IRA, etc.) If anyone has other thoughts, please feel free to post. As I noted before, I've set up a Los Angeles Bogleheads Meetup group. For those who are planning to attend, please post on this thread and also RSVP for the meeting at the link below. I always enjoy the thought-provoking conversations and "deep-dives" into various investment theory and topics. However, this seems like much ado about nothing. I disagree with Larry's argument that owning small or value companies (for example, inside TSM) does not necessarily expose one to their inherent risks. In a nutshell, Larry is saying that if you own a small company and you also own a large company then you aren't exposed to small company risk because your ownership in the large company cancels/neutralizes the small risk (perhaps because the large companies can take over the business of faltering small companies?)...so only some owners of the small company stock are exposed to the risk while others are not. The S&P 500 ...

If you have even a history of paying on time and an otherwise good relationship with the bank, you should absolutely try to negotiate with them. Make sure that you are fully up to date on payments, then call and politely explain the misunderstanding.
Ask them if this will affect your credit score. If so, remind them that you are fully up to date on payments and request (politely) that they not report the negative mark.
Even if you don't have a long relationship with the bank, it's worth a shot.

Nearly every calculator/spreadsheet I have used points to buying being by far the better choice than renting a comparable property for my situation; many of these calculations give generous assumptions to the renter. On top of that, the acquisition costs for my purchase were not as steep as they could have been: I paid no closing costs on the purchase; $80...

One thing that would be nice to take into account is the standard deduction in the tax savings calculation. My marginal tax rate is in the 30s (state and federal), but I derive no benefit from the mortgage interest tax deduction nor deducting property taxes because they don't add up to more than the MFJ standard deduction. I'll see if I can make a modification so that only tax savings in excess of the standard deduction is accounted for. As I see it, you'd basically need two extra fields, one for standard deduction amount (perhaps automatically increased each year by the inflation rate) and one for estimated total of all other itemized deductions. Completely agree. If anything, I should have included this in the original model because the ...

Lately (on the Bogleheads forum and other finance-related sites), I've been seeing a lot of questions about Renting vs. Buying, how to save for a house, etc. As my wife and I are hoping to buy our first home sometime in the next 3 to 5 years, I've been exploring some of the different assumptions that may impact our decision, as well as a lot of the calculators that are available (e.g. the NY Times interactive calculator) to assist with the various scenarios. Although I don't view buying a home as a purely economic decision (since a home can provide you with intangible returns that can't easily be measured), I still want to be able to run some numbers to understand how a given area's home prices compare to reasonably equivalent rentals. I recently picked up a copy of Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes (Amazon Link) and it has not only confirmed a lot of things that I suspected, but it has also opened my eyes to just how obvious so many of our society's problems are (when it comes to diet, disease, and obesity). It's a long read, and I'm only about half way through, but I highly recommend it. Well worth the time and effort.

Non profit or not for profit has to do with the distribution of profits, not simply generating them in the first place. In other words, whereas an owner/investor in a typical corporation can receive a share of the profits in the form of a dividend, a not for profit is prohibited from making such a distribution. It must reinvest it into its cause.
I'm sure that Vanguard doesn't run at exactly $0 profit (revenue equals expenses) every single reporting period. Instead, they charge expenses that best approximate their overhead on average and adjust when necessary.
Also, stives point is right on.

Given the relatively limited responses thus far, there doesn't appear to be one location/geography that would be favored above the rest. Thus, I'm leaning towards sticking with our existing spot at Starbucks in Torrance.
If you are planning to come, but haven't replied and signed up on Meetup, please do. Also, if people feel that another location makes more sense, please speak up so we can consider it.

Tomorrow!!! Los Angeles Bogleheads - March 5th at 10:00AM
Saturday March 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Location TBD. Possible locations listed on Meetup page (see link below). Location will be confirmed in the next week or two after we get some RSVPs. Our last meeting was in November and, unfortunately, several people missed out because they were either unaware or did not see the topic on the forum. Since then, I've been looking at various options to better coordinate future meetings and Meetup.com seemed like the best solution. Thus, in order to hopefully boost attendance and make it easier for people to get reminders and track future meetings, we've set up a Los Angeles Bogleheads Meetup group. For those who are planning to attend, please post on this thread and also RSVP for the meeting at the link bel...

Thank you for posting this article. Basic financial education is so important and I am really hoping that more schools, organizations, and companies offer it. Although I agree that, ultimately, it is the parents' right and obligation to be in charge of certain topics, the reality is that for the 99% of kids whose parents don't take the time (or, frankly, don't know enough themselves) to teach their children elementary personal finance, there needs to be an alternative source. The fact is that it's virtually impossible to successfully navigate today's economy and be a productive and independent member of society without being financially literate. When we have a free market system that is based on individual choice, yet the majority of citiz...

I agree, e-mail is probably a lot easier. With so many things going on, I often forget to check the forums too. Please feel free to PM me with your e-mail addresses. We might also want to consider setting up a Meetup group. Either way, as long as there aren't any objections, I think we should plan for Saturday the 20th. Seems like that should work for almost everyone.
