Re: Who enforces EMH?

It helps to picture what an extremely inefficient market might look like. It would be relatively easy to make a ton of money rather quickly without taking on too much risk. Greedy people like you and I would pile into the market and drive those prices to their "fair values" until the inef...

Re: "Picking Individual Stocks is a Loser's Game"

Smaller companies tend to return more than larger companies . Yes, smaller companies also have higher risk of going bust. In an equal weighted index, there is no bias towards larger companies which ends up generating higher returns for the index due to the higher average returns of the smaller comp...

Re: "Picking Individual Stocks is a Loser's Game"

The vast majority of stocks in an index underperform it while a small minority (usually about 1-5% of it) will vastly outperform. When you pick stocks, if you don't have any of those rare top performers, your portfolio will lag whether you have 5 or 500 stocks in your portfolio. But if you select s...

Re: Who enforces EMH?

From my understanding, markets are not perfectly efficient but inefficiencies are harder and harder to come by especially these days when information travels so quickly. The obvious answer is that everyone who is looking to make a buck in the financial markets and are putting forth a reasonable and ...

Re: What-ifs and Regrets

I'm fine with LBYM as long as I have the basics in life taken care of (food, shelter, internet, transportation.) And an occasional splurge every month or two. For me, I start having "diminishing returns" on my "happiness" when spending more than, say, $30,000 a year in a moderate...

Re: is there a risk of an ETF bubble?

Only way there could be an ETF bubble (by definition) is if these ETFs end up having so much tracking error on the upside. I don't see that happening right now, so no.

Anyone here play Magic the Gathering? I play it online using the digital cards which you can buy/sell/trade with other users. There's also various platforms for playing Magic with the computer.

Re: "Picking Individual Stocks is a Loser's Game"

I think I've read countless studies that came to a conclusion along these lines: The vast majority of stocks in an index underperform it while a small minority (usually about 1-5% of it) will vastly outperform. When you pick stocks, if you don't have any of those rare top performers, your portfolio ...

Another option is to take the shuttle to the Metro Green Line and take that train all the way to Norwalk. Then take Uber from Norwalk to Garden Grove.

Re: 2007 Prius - To repair or NOT - $3K bill and car worth maybe $6K

Tough call.. if you do the repair, you may be looking at replacing the HV battery in a few years down the line which is another $3K. I had the HV battery on my 2001 Prius fail at only 166K miles although that was when the car was 13 years old.

True, but when interest rates are this low, I'd rather bet on them going higher than lower from here. When they will go higher is a question for another day.

Anyone ever buy Hilton's Timeshares (HGVC)?

Last year, I earned enough points to achieve Silver status with Hilton. I didn't do much.. just signed up for their credit card which gave me 40K points after spending $1000 in the first 3 months and I instantly got those points which sent me to Silver status without much work. Fast forward later la...

Re: Anyone travel without hacking?

I sign up for a lot of credit cards and harvest their generous sign-in bonuses but don't engage in manufactured spending to prune even more points. Besides, Bluebird disabled my account earlier this year even though I never engaged in that practice.

Re: It sure looks like a good time to invest in oil

“Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy and Greedy When Others Are Fearful” -- Warren Buffet It sure looks like oil stocks are on clearance now. For example, Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE) is down about 50% from the middle of 2014. I tend to be very disciplined with my 90 / 10 stocks / bonds AA. But what are...
