This is my approach as well. :happy

1. I have a small allocation to I bonds, but TRAD is almost all of my bond allocation for the entire portfolio.
2. I use TRAD in my GSRA for rebalancing, which I simply swap with TISPX (and vice versa) to maintain my AA.
3. Only about 1/4 is in the illiquid version (i.e., TRAD in my RA).

Thanks all for the thoughtful replies. I ended up going with the GSRA (ie, liquid) for now. Over time as we adjust our AA to increase fixed income holdings and so may decide to add to this or potentially some to the illiquid (RA) at some point in the future. My pleasure, gmf001! Glad that we could provide some information to help you with TIAA Traditional (TRAD). For transparency, I'm your age, I'm a teacher, and thus my income is modest (and so is my portfolio - about 7% of what you reported). If my portfolio was larger, I might consider adding more TRAD to my RA. I sleep better at night knowing the TRAD in my GSRA is liquid, should I need access to the funds. At this time, I don't plan to annuitize my TRAD holdings. However, it's still n...

Yeah, that's right, it's a CONTRACT. It is incorrect to pretend that you own a share of TIAA's "General Account", which has to be managed in a prudent way to honor the promises of the insurance company. A.M. Best has rated TIAA as "A++" for many years. But no, it's not like the U.S. Government's guarantee. Well, unless we have a government shutdown, I guess. I remember in the morningstar forum, either you or another poster posted links to the most up-to-date financial statement of the general account several times a few years ago. In my 403b account, i have long used TIAA Traditional in place of bond index funds (in my case, my options for low cost funds are VBMPX and VIPIX); my rationale is that the guaranteed 3% crediting rate is much more attractive than long term returns from the above funds. Try googling TIAA Traditional White Paper or similar search terms, and you will likely get some documents that may be useful. For example this one:
