I started investing with a Target Date Fund at age 45. You can stick with it until retirement, or use it until you learn more about investing (be sure to check out The Three-Fund Portfolio ). I've been quite happy with the U.S. companies I exclusively invest in (that derive 50% of their revenues from other countries).

It works for Jack, and it works for me as well.

I think that OP's mindset is an excellent example of a major problem with 'buy-and-hold': it's very difficult for many people to implement it. The urge to do something after years of underperformance compared to another strategy is just too great for many. Those folks should invest in a target date...
