Re: Computer speed question which computer is faster and why?

That's a little like asking "which car is faster, a BMW or an Audi?". There's need for much more context. The first context you'd need to supply is the context: what are the exact CPU models involved? what type (or speed) of RAM, etc. That would be akin to specifying the exact car models in your hyp...

Asset allocation over time and space

We're probably all familiar with the concept of asset allocation in space (e.g, "put 60% of your taxable space in equities, 40% in bonds"), and with the concept of shifting the allocation over long periods of time (e.g., "age in bonds"). But I'm wondering if there's any research on asset allocation ...

A friend is looking for a financial adviser in the Portland area to advise his family on investments. Preferably fee-only. Anyone has personal experience with someone that they'd like to share?

Re: HDHP under deductible: out-of-pocket or through insuranc

As I mentioned, some providers will offer a discount when billing patients directly in an out-of-pocket situation, as opposed to billing insurance. Since it eventually all comes out of pocket, wouldn't that be cheaper?

HDHP under deductible: out-of-pocket or through insurance?

Next year, many of my medical providers will be in-network for my new HDHP insurance plan. However, barring any catastrophes, I still expect the total expense on medical services to fall under the high deductible and therefore come 100% out of pocket (or nearly 100%, some will probably be considered...

Re: Amazon.com Rewards Visa card from Chase

Linuxizer--sorry for the delay, I was on travel :) One of the redeeming options for points is for ordering flights. If you try to do it online, they send you to a phone number, which is the only annoyance. I always do my research beforehand and request specific flights, so it flows quickly. One othe...

Re: Amazon.com Rewards Visa card from Chase

The best use of this card's reward points is, in my opinion, for travel. 25,000 points pays for most domestic flights up to $400, and you can use additional points or dollars for more expensive flights. Plus, you bypass the frequent flier shenanigans with blackout dates and diluted value.

Re: Tax simulations?

The spreadsheets at http://www.taxvisor.com/taxes/index.html are great if you live in CA (or are only interested in federal taxes). Real easy to play what-if scenarios.

Oh bummer, I missed today's meeting. I wasn't even aware of the existence of the portland meetings, but would love to be notified of the next one.
Any thoughts on using meetup.com or Facebook events?

Re: Equity-only compensation and self employment

Thanks for your detailed post. I wasn't aware that CA disallowed 100% equity compensation and couldn't find a reference for it--could you provide one? All I could find was references to a CA change in 2007 that made the restrictions conform to rule 701, so maybe that restriction is lifted now. I als...

Equity-only compensation and self employment

First time poster, please be gentle :) I've recently left a job (and a long career as an employee), and am considering taking a consulting role for an early-stage startup. our draft agreement spells out the following: - Work will be broken up into small, discrete projects. For each project, we'd agr...
