Re: how do you like living in Columbus, Ohio (and practicing as a hospitalist)
I agree with the others that the greater Columbus area is a great place to work and live. I still own farm property in Delaware County because I am so bullish on the future for the area. I lived there for approximately 20 years and only moved for work reasons. Upper Arlington is very nice for a more upscale residential area. Delaware County (north of Columbus) has experienced tremendous growth due to its' popularity.

I would add the Mazda CX-9 to your list of vehicles to consider. 2016+ is the latest body style. They likely will be less than a comparable used Toyota/Honda and they are great vehicles.

Re: Property "Investment"
I have some farm land/wooded acreage similar to what you are considering. I "cash rent" the tillable acres to a local farmer. My property is in a program called Continuous Use Agricultural Valuation (CAUV). Being in this program dramatically reduces my annual property taxes. My yearly rent income of the tillable acreage covers my annual costs leaving me slightly cash flow positive. It doesn't make me much income. This property is in Ohio. You might see if this program is available in your area. Best of luck with your decision.

I'm only putting this out there so other Bogleheads can feel better about their mistakes.
I made a "hall of fame mistake" and purchased a lighthouse about 10 years ago that was auctioned off by the federal government (General Services Administration).
I bought it through an online public auction. The lighthouse is located on Lake Erie about 30-40 minutes east of Cleveland.
It cost me about $15,000 to get rid of it.
I will see myself out now.

Re: Undoing CDW charges for a car rental
Hertz did something very similar to me one month ago. I paid for the rental car online months in advance. I declined the additional coverage online and again in person when I picked up the car. The counter agent ran my credit card at the time of pickup for what I thought was a security deposit only. Instead, she added $425 of additional insurance/CDW for a one week rental. The receipt was tucked into the folded envelope along with the rental agreement and other papers I was handed with the parking spot marked on the outside. It was my fault for not reviewing the paperwork inside. I made three failed attempts to get the coverage/charges dropped. Hertz lost me a a future customer.

Re: Rethinking "Keep Your Car for Ten Years"
There’s nothing wrong with driving old cars if you like having them more than newer cars. That’s been made clear from the start of this thread. I’m not sure about the plasticky comment, but to make the case that new cars are worse than old cars is probably unfair. If the technology in cars turns you off for example, then I can see how new ones are less appealing than old ones. It is true that almost any car built in the last 25 years can be “wear item maintained” to get you from point A to point B reliably, but it can be argued that a multimillionaire ought not be driving two cars that are a combined 25 years old. I think having the latest and greatest automotive safety features has substantial value if you’re able to afford to have them. ...

Another option is to live more modestly for the first few years. Buy less home and invest the difference. You also save on property taxes, utilities, maintenance, etc.
With your wife's fantastic income, you should be able to really supercharge your financial future.
Living like a resident/fellow early on and investing the difference will let the magic of compounding interest work in your favor.
Just an idea.

When do dealerships typically have car deals? I'm considering buying a new car because my car is 22 years old (Can pay in full). I'm thinking about either buying a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Just went car shopping two weeks ago at our local Toyota dealership. Other than some used ones, there wasn't a single new Toyota in stock. All six that they are allotted each month are sold before they arrived. There was a waiting list of 12 people wanting 2022 vehicles that will probably go unfulfilled as they have stopped making them and are making the 2023. I'm on a waiting list for a 2023 RAV4 Prime. At the time I got on the waiting list, I was the only one wanting a Prime model so should one come in, I'll have first dibs on it. They estimated ...

I seemed to have stirred up more debate than I expected. From the above I gather that there are 3 "best" options: 1) cash withdrawn by buyer and hand-delivered directly to seller's bank teller for immediate deposit. Both parties present. 2) wire transfer. Both parties present at seller's bank to confirm deposit. 3) cashier's check ONLY after bank withdraws funds directly from buyer's account, deposits into bank's account and then issues cashier's check directly on bank's own account and issues the check directly into the hands of the seller. Both parties present. Does that sum it up well enough? +1 Just to throw this out here. At my bank anyway, I am charged $30 for an outgoing domestic wire and only $10 for a cashier's check. I ...

My "funny money" is used to purchase and enjoy sports cars. I usually look for vehicles that are 10-15 years old that are not quite collectible and are obviously not the latest and greatest. With the recent run up in prices across the board, opportunities are pretty slim right now. I enjoy the hunt and sorting them out once I bring them home. I never make a great deal of money but I haven't sold one for less than my purchase price. On a side note, does anyone have a 2006-2012 Aston Martin Vantage manual roadster they want to part with?

One suggestion for while in London is to do the hop on/hop off bus tour.
Your parents can get a good overview of the sights in central London with as much or little walking as they want.
I spent one day on the tour and enjoyed it with my family.

I have done the Yellowstone snowmobile trip three times and really enjoyed it. The easiest way to get there is to fly into Bozeman, MT and take the shuttle to West Yellowstone. Once in West Yellowstone, you will not need a car. Snowmobiles are allowed to be driven around town and left overnight at your hotel. Plan to spend some time both in the park with a guide and outside of the park in the adjacent national forest on your own.

Just saw a 20 year old Park Avenue on CL with the unkillable 3800 V6 with 35,000 for peanuts. Check Craigslist In some retirement areas. Lexus LS’s will also run forever and are inexpensive once they reach 10 plus years old. Try and find an Ultra Luxury model…radar cruise control, refrigerator in the back seat arm rest…all for about $10,000. I purchased a Lexus LS 430 UL last spring. It is a wonderful road trip ...
