Re: Vacation bundling sites (Expedia, Priceline, etc)

My family (kids) was traveling to the Dominican Republic. The airline I used didn't let us pick seats. I didn't realize it until I completed the transaction.
When I called initially they told me they would get back to me and let me get seats together for my family. They didn't get back to me. I went back and forth with them and eventually they assigned us seats together. Like I said it took a lot of phone calls/emails and time.
On our flight there I did witness a family having issues due to not sitting together.
Some people might be ok with that situation but I wasn't comfortable with it and won't be using that airline anymore.

Re: Vacation bundling sites (Expedia, Priceline, etc)

My last trip I booked through one of the sites you mentioned. I had an issue I was trying to work out and the site kept telling me I had to deal with the airline and the airline told me I had to deal directly with the site. It took me dozens of emails and phone calls and weeks of my time to finally getting it straightened out.
If I had to do it all again I would search using the site and then look up those flights and hotels directly or even search for flights on Google. It seems the prices are very similar. If it's not a large savings I would book direct with the airlines hotels etc.

I'm currently reading Living With A Seal. I'm really enjoying this book about a guy who invites a Navy Seal to live with him and his family for a month to help him get into better shape.

The free book a a month is from a limited list and you can only get the free book on Amazon products. This was a disappointment to me. We use apple products. My daughter bought a kindle fire that she had issues with and the replacement they sent didn't last. So now nobody here uses the kindle.

Refrigerator temperature fluctuations

I have a 4 year old fridge that the temperature fluctuates up about 9 degrees higher than the set temperature and freezer goes about 5 degrees colder than its set at. This happens at all different times of day not only when we are in and out of fridge. Even 1st thing this morning it's 9 degrees off.
The freezer fan also intermittently makes lots of noise.
I've had ge service come and found no issues. They ran a computer test. They actually changed my fridges computer since it was only $6 more than the service call.
Anybody else have similar issues?

My 15 and 16 year old kids have a little job where they make $100 to $200 a week cash. They each give me 10% of their pay that I have in an Ally savings account in their names. They each have over $200 in there so far. In my mind it's an early start on building wealth. I'm looking for other recommendations for where to stash their money. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Re: Kitchen Remodel - Appliance Brand/Model Recommendations

Dragging up an old post here. I have GE appliances in my kitchen. We have had one GE over the stove microwave that only lasted 4 years, and the one we replaced it with only lasted 3 years. The 2nd one actually had a small fire in it. We replaced it with a non GE stand alone microwave.
Now our GE fridge has been giving us problems. Our freezer runs too cold which we don't mind, but the fridge fluctuates between the set temperature and sometimes 10 to 12 degrees above the set temperature. The ice machine has slowed on ice production as well. We decided after the microwave issue to never buy GE again.

I've considered "self insuring" on all my purchases, I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I was going to take the money and instead of buying the warranty, put the money in an online savings account. If you do this for every car, tv, iphone, ect. that you buy, you will have money to pay for the infrequent repairs you do need on good products.

I know it's irrational but I worry about how the stock market has been on a rocket ride straight up the past 5 years. I know it's gambler's fallacy to assume this, but I worry that I'll start investing heavily (now that I've finally been able to start, after paying off my high-interest debt) and it'll just get wiped out by a crash in the near future. I'm only at $43k right now so I have a ways to go before I hit 100k. If it gets wiped out and you keep on investing, you'll make a killing in the years to follow when the market eventually returns. Just learn to stay the course and don't peek too much in your portfolio during those periods +1 Excellent advice,,,, Money is made during bear markets as long as you are continuing with your purchas...

Teenagers and a Roth IRA

I've been having my kids (14 and 15 years old) put some babysitting money into their savings account. Its usually only $5 or so a week. (Its approx 10% of their weekly salary). I'd like to have them put it in a Roth IRA but I have a few questions. 1. Can they contribute to a Roth making $20 to $50 a week? 2. Does it bring up any issues for the familys paying them? 3. If the Roth won't work is I Bonds a good option? 4. Will either of these options affect college financial aid? I was lucky enough to have a supervisor point out retirement savings and started at 25 years old. I'd like to give my kids an even bigger head start, and this may not be alot of money now, but I feel it gets them hopefully in the mindset to make this a way of life savi...
