Re: New faster DNS - 1.1.1.1 by CloudFlare
People really need to understand the purpose of DNS and how DNS works before installing the recommended software. You don't need to install any software to use alternate DNS servers. When I clicked on https://1.1.1.1/ it presented me with two options: INSTALL and INFO. I stopped there. Even I do not need to install any software, I will not use this service. Everyone should be cautious about any service like this. That is not how this works. It is true that they presented with two options: INSTALL and INFO. If they are so much smart and trustworthy, they should have presented with: CONFIGURE and INFO. INSTALL and CONFIGURE are not the same. So they have misrepresented at the first place what they like the users to do. How someone can guaran...

Re: New faster DNS - 1.1.1.1 by CloudFlare
Cloudflare dns doesn't require you to install anything.
If you want dns over tls, or dns over https, which windows does not natively support, you need to install a tool to allow that to work.
The install guide on the cloudflare page just explains how to configure your machine to use cloudflare dns. There is no actual installed software requirement.

Beware - several people reported that free credit karma did NOT account for foreign interest tax credit. So if you have funds like Vanguard International in taxable and they issued tax credits, they will not take effect under credit karma and your return will be smaller. So free is not always winning compared to lets say TaxAct at $13 federal depending on your notional amount in taxable account international fund.

Sometimes showrooms keep really expensive models on the floor to make the purchase of cheaper (but still expensive) alternatives seem financially responsible. Or really junky models priced not too much lower than higher quality product, which can help the customer justify the marginal extra cost for much higher perceived quality. In the end, just know what you value and what you are willing to spend to get it. As another poster mentioned, it is all relative, and some simply value the product more for whatever reason. I own a little Prius that gets me from point A to B at 42 MPH (It is 10 years old). Alot of my money strapped friends insist on driving 15-20 MPG vehicles....growing up poor really teaches you. I wish I could go internet only but Comcast charges more for internet than internet+tv... It's possible, but look closely. We had the same thought so initially signed up for a cable package even though we didn't think we would use it much. Once you add on the cable box rental, remote rental, HD fee, random 'taxes' and fees, the price was much higher. You will also likely see a big price jump for the cable after a year when promotional pricing ends. We switched to internet only. Much cheaper, and 90+% of our viewing was streaming anyway. I don't have hd, I have my own cable modem, the TV cable box has no fee. There is a 7.75 broadcast tv fee It's still cheaper to have cable TV... Slightly As to promotional pricing, I call in every 11 months...

Re: WHY do wireless routers need periodic reboots?
This is why I don't go cheap on wireless routers. My home relies on the internet way too much for work at home, slingtv/netflix streaming, and multiple phones/tablets/laptops. I spent $200 on Asus RT-68-u wireless router three or four years ago. I have never had to reboot it by itself. The only time is when my cable modem from comcast went down. I rebooted both to reset everything. I had an Asus N66U as my router for several years. I can't recall it ever rebooting by itself or requiring me to reboot it to restore functionality. I recently replaced it with an Asus AC86 and transitioned the N66 to wireless access point duty. No spontaneous reboots from either. On the other hand I probably have to manually reboot my Comcast cable modem at lea...

Re: WHY do wireless routers need periodic reboots?
Most consumer grade routers are just poorly designed. This is common behavior and suggestions to load open source alternatives such as DD-WRT or Tomato won't fix the underlying hardware. I've been down this road. If you have even a modest technical background, I suggest buying one of these instead: https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-lite/ ... I second this. I've had nothing but bad luck with consumer grade routers. DD-WRT, in my experience, lowers WiFi throughput and isn't any more stable. My Ubiquiti ER-X-SFP + UAP-AC-LITE combo has been serving me very well. I love the CLI, VLAN support and customization options. Unfortunately such gear is aimed at customers with networking experience. Ubiquiti has an easier to use Amplifi system fo...

Re: I contributed $5,500 to an IRA instead of employer plan in 2017, found out I don't get to deduct most of it.
Ok. So you are covered at work because you made the contribution. You believe this means that about $4,500 of your contribution is not deductible. If you have no other accounts named IRA (except Roth), you could convert that $4,500 to Roth IRA instead of leaving it in tIRA as a non-deductible contribution. In fact, would just convert the entire $5,500 to Roth myself rather than have both a tIRA and a Roth IRA. Start over this year and contribute to your 403b (almost certainly a good idea) and maybe a little to Roth IRA. Just how high are the costs in the 403b? Excellent idea to convert to a Roth! I will give Vanguard a call to ask about recharacterization, and I agree that just doing the whole $5,500 makes sense. My 403b is in a T Rowe Pri...

Re: Still using a 5 year old iphone 5. Who's with me? No new phones!!!
T-Mobile has started phasing out 2G antennas, so my Motorola W233 candy bar phone stopped working at my house a year or two ago. It was 7 years old. I replaced it with a Kyocera Rally, another candy bar phone. Unfortunately, it's a piece of junk even though it cost twice as much as my W233. I've saved thousands of dollars on phone costs and service vs. the norm of upgrading every other year and paying $50+ a month, and I seldom miss it. A smart phone certainly has plenty of uses, but I just don't talk on the phone any more than I have to, and I find browsing the internet on a phone tedious enough I'd only put up with it on my wife's phone when I won't be near a computer anytime soon. Re: 4k UHD TVs worth it?
I predict the improvements in size will be used 20% for quality and 80% for size I'm not sure what that means. You don't usually quote "and" improvements with modern codecs, you quote one given the other held constant. Quality and bitrate (and computational complexity) are unavoidable tradeoffs with every codec. I expect a 20-30% bitrate improvement for a given quality (objective or subjective) or a comparable improvement in quality for a given bit rate. I expect the lower end starting out and the higher end in 3-5 years. They have more options than improve quality or reduce size with a higher efficiency codec. They can do some of both, all of one, or all of the other. The some of both is what I suspect will happen, and most of i...

Re: 4k UHD TVs worth it?
When the av1 codec is finalized, you'll be wasting even more bandwidth since 4k will be smaller. That depends on whether a video streamer decreases the bandwidth requirements or increases the quality of the video. Besides, the main advantage of av1 over HEVC will be that it is royalty-free. It remains to be seen how large the performance advantage is once both codecs mature. Hevc has already matured, so we can see where it is now. Av1 just hit Firefox nightly, so it is testable, but the encoder needs a lot of work because it's super slow right now. I agree that HEVC has matured. I've used it for my own videos for a couple of years. The last I read the av1 bitstream format was supposed to be finalized this month. I look forward to seeing wh...

Meh. One of the movies in my collection came with a DVD in addition to the Bluray when I bought it. That made it easy to compare, and we're not even talking about the difference between HD 1080 lines) and UHD 4K (2160 lines). We're talking SD (480 lines) vs HD (1080 lines). On my 50" plasma, I can make out some differences in things like the texture of clothing or hair if I pay attention, and the colors due to the improved color space of Bluray. I think there's differences in the soundtracks, too, but I didn't pay as close of attention to that. Wow. I'm far from a video/audio snob, but I the difference between DVDs at 480 and blu-rays at 1080 is striking. It is actually quite remarkable how bad some of the old DVDs look at this point ...

Re: Best rock solid router with vpn server and guest network
I use an ubiquity edgerouter x, with a second old Asus ac68u from T-Mobile in bridgemode for wifi
Everything I have is plugged into the ubiquity except my Wii u(wifi only), phones, and laptop (I'm primarily a desktop user)
If I were to do it over again, I'd probably go with a top tier Linksys or Netgear nighthawk, and put lede firmware on it... But let me say... That er-x is absolutely perfect for routing stability
