Re: Am I crazy thinking of getting Citigold tier?

OP here. I opened my Citi checking account and qualified for the CitiGold tier in November, 2023. The checking account opening was a pain. I had $200 worth of subscription rebates in calendar year 2023. I had trouble spending it all. I end up getting a $60 Costco membership in 2023. The rebate came pretty quickly. For 2024, I have been getting rebates on my monthly Spotify premium membership fee. As for Citi brokerage, I got my $1000 bonus in late 2023. I then tranferred another 500k for a $2k bonus which is currently pending. The Citi brokerage interface is fairly rudimentary. But the clearing house (Pershing) has been very good. Transferred cost basis are transparent on Citi website and when I tranferred out my initial $200k out of Citi, ...

Re: Have any of you Frugal Zebras Changed Your (Spending) Stripes?

Great thread! I am conflicted about spending more. Being a child of immigrants, I have been pretty frugal all my life. Thanks to a good income and avoidance of any serious financial mistakes, I am FI in my late 40’s. My income has tripled compared to when I first started working 15 years ago. But my spending has gone up 50% at most. I think I have reached peak frugality as the ratio of my annual income to the value of my car is 200. Rationally I understand consumption smoothing. But I find it hard to pull the trigger on what I consider to be “extravagant” spending. I can afford to spend on business class airline tickets easily but I just bought 2 economy class trans-pacific tickets for $1550 per ticket. Biz class tickets would cost ...

Anyone purchased a RAV4 hybrid recently?

I am considering buying a new car.

I think I would like to buy a hybrid. I know that Toyota RAV4 hybrid was hard to find last year. But I see that the Toyota dealerships near me all have RAV4 hybrid on their lots. I am just wondering if there is any room for negotiation off the MRSP or listed TSRP price right now given the supply has improved. Anyone who recently bought a RAV4 hybrid can share their experience? Thanks

Re: Looking for upright piano in northern / central NJ

I am not a muscian but I did some shopping for a upright piano for my kid a few years ago. He started learning with a used upright acoustic piano, which was quite old and one key was damaged beyond repair. When I shopped for a replacement, I found that the local used market only had really old/poor quality used acoustic pianos.

So I ended up buying a Yamaha Clavinova CLP 745 on line. It cost about $3500 in 2021. It is a digital piano, and my son has been very happy with it. Easy to move and no more semi-annual tuning which was a pain as I had to take time off work to let the piano tuner in.

Foreign ATM fee reimbursement

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek] I have a few foreign trips coming up in 2024. Cancun for Spring break and a few countries in Asia in the summer. I plan to use my BofA premium rewards visa card for most of my spending. This card does not charge a foreign exchange fee. I will need some local cash as well. There seem to be layers and layers of fees associated with foreign ATM withdrawals. Out of Network fees, ATM surcharge and currency conversion fees according Google. I use Ally as my primary checking account but I also have access to Chase Private Client checking account, CitiGold checking and Fidelity taxable account and CMA account. I think they all reimburse some ATM fees. I already have a Chase and a Citi debit card. I dont' ...

It sounds like your Webull account is the new omnibus clearing type (either an account you recently opened, or an old one that they converted recently)?
Their FAQ says for the omnibus accounts you need to use the WEB prefix: https://www.webull.com/help/faq/10806-Omnibus-FAQs

Did your transfer complete smoothly? Did the cost basis transfer correctly?
The shares are still in transit. Usually the cost basis takes a few weeks so it is too early to tell.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

I want to let people know about my recent transfer out experience with Webull and hopefully this will save some of you some frustration. I claimed my $1200 bonus on 1/30/24 and the money arrived in my account on 1/31/24. So I initiated a partial account transfer to Robinhood on 1/31/24. I entered my Webull account number, which is 8 digits. To my surprise, I found out on 2/1/24 that the transfer was rejected for having an incorrect account number. I was 100% sure that I entered the right account number. RH could't really help me and asked me contact Webull, which was not very helpful either. Webull said that it did not receive any recent ACAT transfer request for my account. So I made a 2nd attempt from RH, and it was promptly rejected a fe...

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

What's the over/under on a cost basis transfer out of M1? Well Fargo claims they haven't received it, on a transfer submitted in December. Wondering whether to call M1 or the regulators at this point. I have transferred in and out of Wells Fargo before and did not have any problems at all. I have done two transfers into M1 and both were mini-disasters. My 2nd transfer occurred in late November, 2023, and I still don't have the correct cost basis for the 2nd transfer. So, if I have to guess, it is M1's problem. Do y’all foresee that the problems are gonna get worse or at least stay the same now that M1 handles the cost basis internally versus outsourcing to Apex? I think Apex is much better than M1 based on my own experience. M1 has not imp...

OP, are you able to work part time or take extended vacations? Can you reduce your call burden?

In my own subspeciality, it is difficult to work part time unless I do locums. I can't do locums for family reasons. So I continue to work full time. But I have reduced my call commitment. This has significantly improved my quality of life. I can't remember the last time I had to operate in the middle of night because of reduced call commitment.

I am also a little worried about having enough things to do if I retire now.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

I contacted Webull yesterday about the T&C for the new 1.5% bonus. Unfortunately your interpretation is correct. If the "old" existing money is transferred out after 1/31/24, it will count against you. So I won't be doing the Webull 1.5% bonus. I will probably put the new money into RobinHood for their 1% bonus. Thanks for the update. I will leave some money in my Webull taxable account after the bonus hits on 1/30/24. I think I need a taxable account open to receive my Webull IRA bonus later this year. What makes you think that? Is it because the bonus is expected to be paid into the taxable account? If so, you can do a partial ACATS to transfer funds out (potentially to RH and get 1% on it) and leave some change, no? The Ro...

I last visited China about 10 years ago. But I came across a couple of videos made by youtubers from Singapore who discussed the use of mobile payment using Wechat or Alipay. The youtubers did an experiment to see if they could use cash to pay for things in China. RMB is the legal tender in China and by law, can not be declined. I think they were able to use cash everywhere but a few places didn't have enough cash to make change. The videos were made in the last 3-4 months.

I can't see the cost basis on individual lots on RH app. I contacted RH today and was told that their app currently does not support viewing the cost basis. They have not receive the cost basis yet, and it would normally take 2-3 weeks. I was asked to contact RH again in 1-2 weeks to verify the cost basis. RH can generate a "unrealized gain/loss" report which will show the cost basis of individual lots . Did you manage to get them to produce this cost-basis report for you? I'm looking at this bonus https://m1.com/transfer/promo-20k/ and it says A Payment Account cannot be a retirement account of any kind. When I last got a bonus from M1 (several years ago), I opened an IRA and a brokerage account. The transfer was to the IRA, but the payout was in the brokerage account. I would much rather transfer an IRA account, but it seems to be disallowed by this promotion. From comments earlier in the thread, it seems that M1 doesn't do a great job of transferring cost basis. Add to that the possibility that they may try and force the account into one of their 'pies', which would lead to a lot of tax sales (my recollection is that the default behavior for an account is a pie, and I had to set it last time to not be a p...

Will say that speaking Japanese is entirely unnecessary for tourism. English signage and translated announcements are common. We only used public transportation there, and it was easier to get around Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto than it is in most US cities.

Personally, I’d just stay in Tokyo with that short of a window. Don’t have any book recommendations — I just looked on the web.
Thanks. I will read the linked thread.

We have the option to fly into Osaka directly.

My 12-year old son and I are planning a 2-week trip to SE Asia at the end of May. Considering a 3-4 day side trip Japan. We have never been to Japan before except transiting through Tokyo airports.

I want to narrow down where we should go.

Would you suggest Tokyo vs Osaka/Kyoto for the time we have? Any guidebooks you would recommend? We want to travel independently without joining a tour group. We don't speak Japanese.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

While the Robinhood 1% bonus posts instantly, the ACATS fee reimbursement doesn’t. I’ve bugged them a few times now and sent the backup statement from my previous broker, and they haven’t yet reimbursed, and it has gone on a month. Only $75 compared to the much larger bonus, but a strike on them. My much larger TD Ameritrade account is now going to Wells Fargo, now that I confirmed my transfer date to Schwab is the weekend of May 10 (so there won’t be any interaction between the Schwab rollover and any ACATS out). I thought that I had the same transfer fee reimbursement delay as you. I couldn't see the reimbursement on my app under "history". So I chatted with robinhood support. Their webiste is functional but seems to lack a few functions like setting up DRIP and ACAT transfers. I think I will have to call Citi to set up DRIP. I hope by now you found that you can setup DRIP online. Hidden under Services / Investment Services. you will see a very short menu (very few online services) but there are a few including "Manage Reinvestment Options". Also you can select disposition method (fifo, lifo etc) for sales. If you select Manage Investments there is some more functionality that seems should be on the main brokerage page. The main problem for me with Citi Brokerage is lack of various types of registrations. I ended up calling Citi personal wealth management to set up DRIP. The process wasn't too painful ...

Same vehicle, same problem, here. You think it leaks or burns oil? I never see oil stains on ground but oil filter does have a rim of oil so imagine that's my leak. 262k miles. The car is running well except it has an engine oil leak. I have to add about 1 quart of oil every 1500 to 2000 miles.

Basically you get 0.8% on Dec 31st 2024
and then another 0.7% on Dec 31st 2025

Long story short you have to keep your cash at Webull for 2 years to get the whole bonus, but it appears you can break free after 1 year and just get 0.8% which is still pretty good.

Does this work on IRAs? Also, is the limit of what they give you $30,000 (ie can transfer up to $2 million) or is are they trying to only go for $30,000 accounts? I'd assume the former but unclear.
IRA is excluded. Your can transfer up to $2 million for a $30k bonus.

cadreamer2015 wrote: Mon Jan 01, 2024 10:20 am My iPad 6th generation is probably about 5 or 6 years old. It seems slow and hangs up often in the New York Times app. I find hanging up in the New York Times app particularly frustrating - the app is often completely unusable. Is this a sign that I should replace my iPad? If so I would probably wait until March/April when Apple is rumored to be releasing new iPads. Anyone with experience with iPad 6th generation?
I think it is a problem with the NYT ipad app than with your ipad.

Re: Robin Hood 1% Asset transfer bonus

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek] Howdy Robin Hood is offering a 1% bonus for asset transfers, details shown in URL. There does not appear to be a limit on the size or much on asset type, so somebody with a for instance $2 million ETF could presumably get a $20K bonus for transferring. There is a 2 year limit to maintain the assets, with some pro-rated clawback if you move the assets out before 2 years. A search shows this has not been discussed in the forum. Has anyone done this transfer, how did it work, any caveats, gotchas or general comments? https://robinhood.com/us/en/support/articles/account-transfer-bonus-faq/ Happy holidays W B I think this offer was discussed in this mega thread before. Re: Radiator Flush How Often How Much

22k miles sounds very early for a coolant flush or coolant fluid rplacement.

My 2012 Subaru Outback calls for first coolant replacement after 11 years or 138k miles. I just did this myself earlier this year. I didn't bother with a flush. I bought pre-mixed "super-coolant" from Subaru and did a drain and fill.

Re: New to Costco

I just got a new Costco memeship because it was free. I haven't shopped at a physical Costco store in 10 years as the closest Costco is 2 hours away.

I don't plan to drive 2 hours to shop at a physical store.

Just wondering if there is any good online deals at Costco?

Thanks

Re: Is it right for me to give up on backdoor Roth?

I think it depends on how many working years you have left. If you are going to work 10 plus years, I would try to keep Backdroor Roth option open.

If your new 401k does not accept transfers, you can try to open a solo 401k to accept your old workplace 401k if you can get some 1099 income to justify a solo 401k account.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Does anyone have positive data points to report on for ACATS transfers to either Robinhood / Citi PWM / M1 for taxable accounts? Specifically: - Did the cost basis transfer correctly and how long did it take - Does the platform allow viewing of the cost basis for each lot - General impressions regarding the ACATS process ACAT process were smooth for Robinhood and Citi PWM. Didn't take long. Maybe about 1 week for the cost basis to show. I can see individual lots at Citi PWM. I can't see individual lots at Robinhood, but I didn't ask their rep if I could. I found their app is just too busy and confusing. M1 had the worst ACAT process. It took a long time. Maybe 30 days. I had to contact M1 and M1 would claim that they didn't receive them. I...

Re: What frugal thing did you do today?

I did this last week. We were on a road trip over the Thanksgiving holidays. I hit a curb in the dark and my front tire was damaged. We were about 400 miles from home, and were planning to drive home on Sunday when most tire shops were closed. I didn't want to use my spare tire which was more than 10 years old. Luckily I found a used tire shop close to the hotel where we were staying. Bought a used tire of the same size. Took only 15 mins at the shop Sunday am, and cost only $50 plus tax. After I got home, I measured the treads on all my tires. The newly bought used tire was a different brand, and had 6/32 inch of tread left. My 3 other tires are Michelin Defenders with 8/32 inch treads. My car is AWD. I could buy 4 brand new tires. But I ...
