Re: Expensive Car Repair, New Engine

Similar type of issue here. I have 2006 Ford Focus Wagon bought used in 2009 with 33k miles and this 4th of July weekend we took it to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Got off the expressway in Wisconsin and after stopping the car would not go above 20 mph without revving hard and not shifting. Luckily a car...

Re: Max It Out Tomorrow

According to the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham: "According to Ibbotson Associates, the leading financial research firm, if you had invested $12,000 in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index at the beginning of September 1929, 10 years later you would have had only $7,223 left. But ...

Re: HELOC for emergency and when you would use it

I used my Local Credit Union in 2008, zero cost to open and amortized over 20 years. The rate is variable, but has not gone above 4% since I took it out. I have only used it for emergencies on the house or reducing higher credit debts. It has eliminated the need to cash out of taxable accounts, but ...

Re: How much has Bogleheads contributed to your net worth?

I started investing on my own in 2009 after retiring on disability. My coworker suggested vanguard, and thats how I learned about the boglehead philosphy. Intially I was just shooting in the dark at some mutual funds that were based on past performance, but this forum has taken my retirement account...

Re: Seeking advice on learning computer science

I am an active computer scientist with B.S. in the field, but the only class that matter more than any is being able to program effectively in the real world and being able to integrate and use terminology because it changes very fast. Most university require some type of introduction to programming...

Re: Your very first email

First email using DOS command line logging into university over telnet (dial up connection - AT/T phone service with 56k modem) on IBM 286, around 1994/5 timeframe. Great using command line, you get the real feel of giving commands to a machine instead mouse clicks and using BASIC/C/TurboC/TurboC++ ...

Re: 2015 Suburu Outback

I have 2010 Forester, It's been a good vehicle for the most part. Front wheel bearing went out 62000 miles, and very rough in dirt roads or uneven pavement. The latest is that subaru faces a class action lawsuit for the following models in this report: http://www.autoblog.com/2014/07/22/subaru-class...

Re: 0% Furniture Credit

That's a great offer, but they will hit your credit report and if your late, all the penalties and drop in your credit
score if you need to do any further financing for the long term. Stick with cash if you can do it.

Rebalancing restricts vanguard funds?

From a long term investment, why would vanguard restrict your funds after you rebalance? Their customer services is horrible and told them I would gladly take my money somewhere else? They said it is so you do not do market timing? I am not market timing I am rebalancing to keep my target allocation...

Re: Assisting/advising friend about Federal employee disabil

If she is approved for LTD(Long Term Disabilty) then she has met the 6 month short term disabilty waiting period. After 18 months(from that 6 months) if you cannot perform the duties of "any occupation" than she will deemed disabled until retirement age. But if she begins to work at all, a...

Re: Adding cash to rollover when retired/disabled?

Yes, I am contributing to both her Roth IRA and my Roth IRA since she has enough income to meet the contributions for both. My question is, if all my income(not wife's) is tax-free(disabilty + SS) can I contribute any to the rollover ira, or can it only be to the Roth's and a taxable account. So far...

Learned that you can install classicshell.exe and it will give you the windows 7 look and feel and you can switch back to metro with just the start menu. http://www.classicshell.net/ I also run linux to do an...
