Re: Parents' Financial Situation/Crisis [Heir to estate with more debt than assets]

Be very careful to understand any paperwork that you are asked to sign if they go into a hospital or long term care to make sure that you do not unknowingly take on financial responsibility for them. If an adult child does NOT sign the paperwork indicating that the adult child is responsible for the dependent parent and assuring that someone (i.e., the adult child) will pay for the medical services, isn't the only outcome that medical services will be withheld from the adult parent? It just seems to me that the adult child is in a no-win situation when it comes to aging parents who was not financially prepared: S/he either is financially responsible for the long-term care and medical services of the adult parent or s/he takes care of that ...

Re: Fully Skirted Rear-Discharge Toilets

My guess is that cutting and patching drywall behind the toilet to use a standard rear discharge toilet will be the cheapest option by far and will give you a lot more in the way of toilet selection. I have never seen a toilet as you described. Probably your only option is to use a standard rear discharge toilet and off set it from the wall with pipe fittings going down through the floor. What I don't understand is what is there now? If it is a standard floor drain offset from the wall by 12", even if you could find such a toilet with a rear discharge that goes down through a floor, the toilet is going to end up a foot and a half from the wall? The rear-discharge toilets are not that common, which is why there are so few options for t...

Is there even such a thing?

Requirements: It is a floor-mounted, rear-discharge toilet. I don't want to break the wall in order to install an in-wall system.

I cannot seem to find such a toilet that is fully skirted. Or, rather, I found only one: A Suisse Madison toilet. Other than this brand, other ones that offer the rear discharge require the system to be in-wall.

Standalone Umbrella Insurance - Markel

Has anyone had experience with Markel Insurance, particularly the umbrella policy? I have read some not-so-good reviews about Markel (though not necessarily about the umbrella portion), so am hesitant to use them for the umbrella portion. My current insurer would not insure me under their own umbrella, because I was in a car accident a little over a year ago. They gave me a quote for a partnering company, Markel Insurance. Not sure what the reputation of this company is, but a cursory internet search suggests unhappy customers. I did contact Amica. To get the umbrella policy with Amica, I also would need to get my auto insurance with them (and I also would transfer my homeowners insurance with them). Problem is, because of my accident, my a...

Car Repair Delays Due to Missing Parts - Going into month 3

I was in a car accident in mid December. (My car was only one year old, unfortunately.) This is a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Since then, I have had to rent a car. The auto body shop I am using was and continues to be backlogged, and they have had issues with getting parts. Two months later, I am still renting a car. My insurance company would not extend the rental beyond 45 days, so I have had to pay out of pocket for a one month’s car rental. Today, my auto body shop called me and said they STILL do not have a part from Toyota. This is the second or third time the part’s release was pushed back. He expects the part in mid March, but even then cannot promise that. If that is the case, I would have to pay out of pocket for a second month of a car r...

My HVAC guy, who was doing repairs on the a/c, was the one who noticed the corrosion. He said that it looks like it was shoddy work and that the installer didn't even do a good job taping. The HVAC guy said if he repaired it, he would solder off the copper pipe at a location away from where the rod meets the water heater. (Not sure why he would solder off an area of the copper pipe that isn't damaged though.)

Looking at the warranty right now:

State Water Heaters (the warrantor) will furnish the ORIGINAL OWNER, 1) a replacement State water heater of equivalent size and current model if the glass-lined tank in this water heater leaks and, 2) a replacement part for any component part which fails. Water Heater Valve Corrosion: Repairable or is Water Heater Replacement Necessary

My gas water heater is only 5 years old. (Warranty is for 6 years.) My HVAC guy (he did not install the water heater) noticed some corrosion on the hot water valve at the top of the water heater. He said if he repaired it, he would cut a portion of the pipe (away from the valve section that joins with the water heater). I contacted two reputable plumbers in the area and they both recommend replacing the water heater. (Big surprise.) I asked whether it was not possible to simply repair the valve or pipe, as it was costly to replace the water heater. One of the companies did suggest that the water heater is under warranty and that if they were to replace my water heater, I could possibly save $600-700, since the water heater would be replaced...

It may not be the treadmill that is causing your back issues, but your running form, sneakers, underlying issues, or something else. For me, I notice that my back tends to hurt more if I run on a decline (downhill).

Instead of giving up the treadmill, can't you just throw in some yoga and other stretches? I have some back issues, and doing extended child's poses (at least 10) helps. There are other back exercises that can help. Ask your physical therapist. About 4 years ago, I had some serious back pain, and my physical therapist prescribed a bunch of back exercises. They helped tremendously. I do the exercises during the occasional flare-up of back pain.

I'm looking at a Toyota RAV4 hybrid myself. The one I want is $40,000.

Toyota RAV4s have about ten different models, I believe, ranging from basic (LE) to the top of the line. I'm guessing the OP and I share the same preference for RAV4 model: The Limited AWD Hybrid, which is at the other end of the RAV4 spectrum.

The Limited AWD Hybrid starts at about $36,000, but when you add some of the bells and whistles, it easily comes out to $40,000. And that's not even counting taxes or dealer's fees.

Re: How long to keep a car

The current car I drive, a 2000 Toyota Camry, just passed its 20-year birthday. I am the original owner and have kept the car in very good condition. In fact, mechanics always tell me that they are shocked the car looks so good. The car is showing signs of age, however. In the past two years I have spent a small fortune on repairs. In fact, right now the car is in the shop. I knew the brakes (pads and rotors) needed to be replaced, but it turns out the problem was really the control arms, which needed replacement. That will not be cheap to repair. Although I've spent a lot in repairs in the last couple of years, I still think there are lots of years left in the car (at 122,000 miles odometer). Nonetheless, I am still shopping for a new car.

For many of the reasons you have listed, NO, you definitely should NOT buy a condo in the Boston area.

Your price for a 3-bedroom condo is unrealistically low....unless it is a duplex type of place, but there doesn't seem to be too many duplexes with 3 bedrooms.

The closer you are to Boston city proper, the more expensive it will be. The Blue Line tends to cover heavily working-class neighborhoods, so maybe you will find a run-down condo/duplex type that fits your budget.

Peppermint oil.

Last year was the first time I used the peppermint oil remedy to ward off ants, other insects, and mice. Using a solution of pure peppermint oil, water, and a few drops of dishwashing soap, I sprayed outside of the house, around the foundation and door and window frames.

Inside the house, I put pure peppermint oil on cotton balls and put the peppermint-oil-infused cotton balls around the window frame and sliding glass door frame. I would respray the cotton balls periodically with a diluted peppermint oil spray or else put more pure peppermint oil drops on each cotton ball every once in a while.

It seemed to work, because I recall seeing minimal to no ants inside the house last year.

The "wood pad" (the garage door contractor's terminology) is the vertical wood beam to which the garage door track is attached. I would attach pictures here, but the site does not allow for personal photos. I contacted the garage door company that installed my garage door back at the end of March. The division manager (not the installer) said that he thinks the wood beams are fine, and that replacing the wood beams is rare. He thinks that all that needs to be done is to secure the top of the beam to the wall ("rear cured"). A technician will come out in the middle of the next week, so hopefully this will be resolved soon. I am hoping the fix is as simple as using lag bolts to anchor the wood frame to the wall. Wood pad for garage door separating from wall: Who is responsible?

At the end of March 2018, I replaced my garage door. After the installation, I was puzzled by why certain things were not replaced, including the wood anchor pads in which the garage door track is installed. Today, I noticed that on one side of the garage door, the wood anchor pad (on which the garage door and track are attached) is noticeably separating from the garage wall itself. In time, I suspect the entire wood beam will separate. Back in March, the garage door installer said that they do not replace garage door pads, as that is part of the garage door structure. To me, they are supposed to replace it, but even if they did not, they could have advised me to find a carpenter to replace it. Who is responsible for the wood anchor pad sep...
