Welcome to the forum, you are posting anonymously which should ease most concerns.
Share what you are comfortable with, and adjust as you become more or less comfortable.
My only concern with posting is that friends or family that know I frequent this site may be privy to my financials. As it turns out they find personal finance forums boring so even if I did post specifics, they would probably never see them.

So the $5 was deducted to pay for Gold and I now am at 99% margin. To free up funds for next months $5 Gold fee I turned off dividend reinvestment on PULS (short term bond etf). Looks like the dividend will come in a few days before the Gold fee is due.
Edited to add that I set my margin limit at 1k, updated it to $1050.00 to cover to provide a little wiggle room for Gold fees.

Cruises are canceling excursions outside of areas they can secure. As of now Royal Carribean is still stopping in Labidee Haiti but they are canceling excursions like jet ski tour, snorkeling tours etc. A little disappointing as I have a cruise scheduled for July, maybe things will have settled down by then.

Too much and it is less than $100! Going to get it down to around $20 not including what may be in my daughter’s room.
Fun fact, my home insurance only covered up to $200 in cash lost due to burglary. I had about the same then, maybe claimed $100 if my memory serves me correctly.

Re: Travel Health Insurance (China)?
I highly recommend getting a travel health ins policy.
My daughter just returned from Spain and I purchased a 1,000,000 policy with zero deductible, no preexisting health exclusions, for less than $20! Your kids will be really inexpensive, parents not so much, but still affordable. This was a real bargain as my daughter does have health issues. I encourage her to travel, but I like to make sure she is covered in case something happens.
I got her policy from GeoBlue Voyager Choice.

I would not worry too much about your daughter traveling to stay at a resort. If it were my daughter I would tell her to stay on the resort and not to take any trips outside of the resort for anything. And I would reemphasize until I was comfortable that she understood! We saw some strange things while in DR. For example we took an excursion to a zip-line park, and there was a somewhat disheveled guy with a shotgun pacing around the buses outside. Providing security I assume. Also on the return trip we saw a passenger on a moped with a shotgun strapped to his back. The poverty of the island was disheartening. I never felt unsafe, but certainly would not try a DIY tour of DR. Tourism seems to support the island and they do a good job of prot...

How did your portfolio perform when bonds were upside down a few years ago? That was an ugly year for me, and I am tilted much further on the equities side.xxd091 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2024 11:47 am Nightmare at retirement-a 50% drop in equities -not uncommon unfortunately-could be a life changing scenario
Coping mechanisms investors use…..
a) have a healthy slug of bonds
b) have 2-3 or more years living expenses in cash
Personally when I retired I went to a 30/70 portfolio-has worked for the last 21 years ie so far!-now aged 78
Currently 34/60/6 -equities/bonds/cash.Cash = 2-3 years living expenses

What good is a Roth is my question! I would rather take a tax deduction now while my income is exponentially higher than it will be when I retire. The lions share of my portfolio is in taxable. Upon retirement I can keep my AGI low enough for capital gains tax to be zero. I plan on retiring early so RMDs are not a concern at this point, This is not some remarkable planing on my part, it just worked out this way. Being self employed with employees, my IRA contributions have been minimal. Business is not big enough to fund IRA contributions for employees. House is paid for, have money in HSA for medical expense, kiddos 529 is funded. Really just need to withdraw money or the basics. It is very possible that there is a huge oversight in my ana...

I had a more troublesome problem at my business, roof rats! They climbed a tree, jumped on the roof, chewed a hole in roofing material above awning and began to create havoc. I finally had to cut down a tree to prevent access.
An old school exterminator came and his method was to put the peanut butter & jelly combo mixture on rat bait poison and toss it in areas of infestation. Apparently this works, he guaranteed his service for 1 or 2 years, I can’t remember but I never had to call him back!

Re: A Tale of Two 529 Plans or Don't Worry It Will All Work Out
I was late to the game and started funding 5 yrs before my daughter started college. I did fund 10k each year, and my state has a deduction for 529 plans. First year of college began in a down year for the market, so I just cash flowed the first 3 semesters. I withdrew from the 529 for her 4th semester after a decent return for 2023. She has enough left to fund the final 2 years of her undergraduate degree. Dad offered to pay for 4 years, afterwards kiddo can figure it out. Seemed to work out ok for me, if we have another down year for equities I may cash flow expenses again. Any remaining funds will be a bonus for her to spend on whatever further education she is pursuing. One small 1 scholarship for 1k. Kiddo seems too busy to pursue them...

Interesting. The following is a joke: Maybe need to leave the timeshares to these companies as their "inheritance." Yeah, it's an incredible racket. I don't pretend to know all the details but based on my conversations with my family member the problem is the contract liability (usually yearly maintenance fees) falls back onto the estate if no one steps up to accept the inherited timeshare. From my understanding is was impossible for my family member to settle the estate until the liability was addressed. The one that took the longest was from one of big name timeshares (I won't name it). I would argue that it might be personally actionable if someone on BH was duly warned about a bad timeshare company by name. On what planet? My...

Thanks again to the quick answers above--I appreciate it! You need to do your conversion somewhere else and then transfer to Robinhood. Don't transfer funds to Robinhood that you need to convert. So, this year is already all taken care of, but for future years, assuming the 3% match continues, folks contributing to a Traditional IRA at Robinhood and then converting it to a Roth IRA at Robinhood (i.e. doing backdoor Roth IRA) wouldn't receive their contribution match (because Robinhood specifies that "The funds that earned the match must be kept in the account for at least 5 years to avoid a potential Early IRA Match Removal Fee"?) or is there some other reason not to do this that you're referring to? Do you really want to be maki...

Re: Where to find franchise opportunities?
Welcome to the forum!
Franchise opportunities can be a minefield to navigate! The best way to describe a franchise is you are buying a job.
There is money to be made, but it can be a crapshoot. I know franchisees in the same business where some make a lot of money, and others lose money. While some of this can be based on the operators performance, often times it is just the location.
Due diligence can not be overstated when researching any business opportunity.

Seems like the common wisdom here is to take the 3% bonus and then stop paying for Gold after a year. Not earth-shattering, but I'll take it. Are the rest of you just thinking you want to exit from RH asap, and plan to make future Roth contributions elsewhere? Just the option to take time off freely is huge! Pay scale may start to move up again, or they could continue to make cuts. I would be hesitant to leave unless they continue to lower payroll expenses, or the work life balance becomes less favorable. I am not discounting your pay cut, that is HUGE and it will take some time to swallow that pill. Edited to add this advice is from a guy in his 50s! I have been with the same company for 32 years, roughly half of those years as an employee and half as an owner. I did read somewhere recently that people that make more moves during their career...

Another vote for not impressed with RH user interface. Maybe I am just old and like intuitive design, possibly some would find that boring. I did like that I could link my savings account to transfer funds. If some nefarious activity presents itself, it will be a sad day for whoever has access to this savings account! To recap my rollover, I initiated a transfer on 02/09 from Vanguard, as well as a small brokerage rollover from Ally Invest on 02/10. All funds transferred and available 02/16. I had to convert a bond holding at Vanguard to cash before transferring as there was not a comparable ETF to transfer in kind. Overall process went smoothly, 3% match funds are available to invest.
