Re: Aggregator Software

Vanguard, Schwab and Fidelity offer aggregators (although apparently Flagship status or some portfolio threshold size is required with Vanguard's).

Nowadays, I believe the above three make use of account aggregation, token-based connections, enabling them to verify, authenticate, and aggregate data without ever sharing usernames or passwords.

They don't mention it by name, but if you search for yodlee, you wind up on a page about aggregation. That's where I saw it as a benefit of (digital) PAS.

As I mentioned, the aggregator fees can add up. If millions of customers, that aren't paying anything extra to Vanguard, started using the service, it would be a significant cost.
Ah, understood now. Fees per user. Makes sense now. Thx.

Re: Can Vanguard track outside investments?

I use Yodlee through Vanguard. It's worked quite well for me. I believe you have to be a Flagship customer. I also had to call Vanguard for them to set it up for me. Whether it's still available or at what threshold, it can't hurt to call Vanguard and ask. Yodlee is apparently pretty expensive. I forgot who was writing about it, but in all the discussion about Mint being discontinued, I was reading up on the competitors. One of them was mentioning that the aggregation services were a significant line item on their expenses. I'm not surprised that Vanguard doesn't offer it to everyone. I, as a Steerage-qualified investor, can only create outside accounts that I manually update. Even though there's a drop-down for a limited number of brokera...

You and your wife would be better off using Keepass with a good interface.

For example,

You can store the password database locally or in iCloud or equivalent.
Thanks for the recommendation. I just looked at it. It appears there is no Windows version. I noticed a site recommending KeePassXC for Windows. So I suppose I could have the laptops using KeePassXC connect to the same DB that Strongbox uses?

This is exactly why I am paying $10 for Bitwarden as well.

I have been using Keepass for years. I have no issues with it, but it will be much easier for my wife to use Bitwarden, due to the much simpler interface for a non-tech person.

I've been testing Bitwarden. The one issue that bothers me, so far is this: https://community.bitwarden.com/t/error ... ffic/45987

I can get around it by using a VPN if needed, but that would be a complication for a non-tech person.

I just opened an ME account last month, and I was unhappy about the separate credentials for ME and the lack of support for security keys for that side, since I have them enabled for BofA.
Thanks for mentioning this. I have a checking account at BofA with security keys, and am considering whether to open an ME account. It's discouraging to hear the ME side is no better than most other major banks security wise and clearly behind most other brokerages.

That would be my advice. That is what I do. And use Advanced Protection Program to protect your G Voice account.

There are several other threads that talk about this. Otherwise a bad actor can bypass your YubiKey security using the mobile app. Vanguard needs to support YubiKeys on mobile and then this security hole is no more.

Did you do this? Do you not have any phone number for SMS 2FA?
Yes, I disabled SMS and, no, no phone # for SMS 2FA. When I click on the Security link there are several options displayed. One is:
Security code
Add another layer of security with two-factor authentication
And another is:
Security key
Register a security key for additional online protection
Of course I have security keys setup, but the Security code is not and thus there is no cellphone# within that Security Code section, nor elsewhere on my VG account (that I'm aware of).

I do have a G voice number and it's on file with Vanguard, so I imagine I don't have to worry about SMS, correct? They don't have a cellphone number for me, only my G voice number.

Thanks for the Advanced Protection Program tip. When I did a Security Check, google says no recommended actions, but I'll look into this.

I’m still with vanguard. I called them last week for some help, and they were great. I’m disappointed in their handling of 2FA though. I might switch away from them in the future if dibebody like Fidelity gets that right. (Maybe fidelity already has, I don’t know). What issues did you have with their handling of 2FA? There are lengthy threads in this…. There isn’t a way to permanently disable SMS as a backup recovery mechanism. So you can use YubiKey, which is good. But bad people could still bypass that and use SMS to reset the password. No actual cases of this happening that I’m aware of though….. I don’t want to derail this thread though. Overall,I’m still satisfied enough with Vanguard to keep all my money there. Yes, I'm familiar with...

Fidelity and Schwab do not support Yubikeys at this time. I've talked with Schwab about it and they hinted changes were coming, but still waiting. I have no experience with Merrill Edge but a search indicates they do not, which is interesting since they are a subsidiary of Bank of America which does (yeah, I know, different platforms, etc.) (This link claims you can put a Symantec VIP credential on a Yubikey, after which it works similarly for Fidelity and Charles Schwab, but thinks it's more trouble than it's worth: https://thefinancebuff.com/s...

I do not yet but will soon. My plan is to buy TIPS in the taxable account to fill out part of a LMP plan, mostly for the years before Social Security 2035-2039. I'm in 24% Federal bracket and have sufficient cashflow to pay whatever accrued taxes are due yearly. This should not be a large amount because the coupons are ~2% so you are looking at about 0.5% per year in taxes (which would eventually be due anyway, or paid on nominal bonds). Aren't the changes in principal also taxed each year? Couldn't that be more than the coupon taxes? Or am I misunderstanding TIPS taxation? Assuming one is not buying TIPS through a mutual fund or ETF, then... There might be at least one thread here covering that, but the following is from Explore Tips, by ...

I visited the site after the Privacy.com recommendation posted here. It appeared as if one could register with just a CC or a debit card. But I'm seeing different responses here.

I had read through their FAQS which were rather sparse as well.

I'll try sending an email query and see what response, if any, I receive. I'm so far not impressed or encouraged thanks to their web site as well as the info posted here.

Re: which cards let you issue virtual credit card numbers

I've only had one need to dispute a charge... made an online purchase, the card was charged, but no item was ever shipped or received. I sent applicable documentation to privacy.com support ( not the physical card issuer), and they responded and took over the issue. My charge was refunded. Wow... Interesting. Not what I expected, but I like it. I would find that very useful. Citi has VC's but the one time I disputed a VC charge, they also invalidated the real card! That's their policy, although still useful, it does severely limit the utility of the VC's. I'll most likely make use of privacy.com then. I'll try to confirm with an inquiry to Privacy. Thx for the info! One more question. Can one provide them a physical credit card number, wit...

+1 I love privacy.com. I get individual controls for each card ($-limit, one-time-use or many, etc.).
I love to use these cards for purchases that love to have "strings attached"... like magazine subscriptions, 'free' trials, or any vendor where I need to say the CC number out loud.

Refunds are easily processed.
If you need to dispute a charge, I assume you take that up with the physical credit/debit card issuer? Card issuers don't have an issue with this?

You do realize that "someone's blog" is the NADAQ's in this case? So indeed the price is adjusted downwards. I'm not sure whether the poster we are referring to was aware of that. If he was, then fine.

Re: Tell me again, why dividends are not useful ?

There is a common misstatement repeated in these threads. That is, that a stock’s market value will decrease by the amount of the dividend paid. The NASDAQ does indeed adjust the closing price (it's stated in the link below): When a company pays a cash dividend, its total value goes down by the amount of cash paid out. (This makes intuitive sense: the cash has been transferred from the company’s coffers to the pockets of its shareholders, hence the company is worth that much less). The nominal share price then goes down by the dividend per share, on the ex-dividend date. Source and much more detail here: https://blog.data.nasdaq.com/the-comprehensive-guide-to-stock-price-calculation Yes, but you're still missing the point made by Overseas....

Re: which cards let you issue virtual credit card numbers

Citi used to allow individual virtual numbers for each transaction, but the option seems to have been removed from their website. I switched to a different card when they removed the 2% cash back, so I don't know what they're doing now. Which 2% card did they remove? They've had the DoubleCash 2% card for a while. I forget the name of the card, but I had it for more than 20 years before I switched to another card when they announced they were killing my 2% back. Wait, who announced they were killing the 2% cash back? The Citi Double Cash card is still paying 2% cash back (with the same tedious "1% when you buy, 1% when you save" approach that disincentivizes taking your rewards in the form of a statement credit). Yes, it is tedio...

A legitimate debate is whether there is some secret sause in dividend paying stocks. But the OP's question is "why dividends are not useful?" They are useful.
Agreed.

ThereAreNoGurus wrote: Sat Sep 16, 2023 1:00 pm As for item 2), you realize when one receives a dividend payment one is losing/diluting ownership with respect to other investors who re-invest the dividend, right?
There's something false in the above. If someone owns exactly 1% of a company (say, 10,000 shares out of a million), after a dividend is paid and not reinvested, the person still owns exactly 1% of the company. Saying that there's "dilution" when the ownership percentage remains the same is false.
You are correct. The dividend re-investor will collect additional shares on the market. My mistake on this one.
