58 and still working. Have reached ‘critical mass’ and can afford to stop working. AA currently 70/30 though have leaned towards 60/40. With fixed income yield insignificant, comfortable with higher equity percentage.

Re: Who is continuing to buy as planned?
I almost never try to time the market, except in these type situations.I have shifted about 6% MMF into equities after the market tanked 10%. Sank another 2% into equities from fixed income when it was 20% down. As long as I have some dry powder, will do the same if/when it drops 30%. Purchases split between FTSE ex US and small cap value. In addition, continuing to dollar cost average monthly as before. Overall allocation a bit off, but close to desired.

It would be great if there was no minimum for check writing for VG MM accounts. The need for a bank would be eliminated

[Personally identifiable information removed by admin LadyGeek, see below.], you don't have nearly enough. How much of your savings is accessible now and how much is in tax advantaged? Doing [(removed) --admin LadyGeek] would make it possible but otherwise I think it will be tight. I'm tired too and have the same temptations. Good luck!

Re: Career Advice for an Unhappy Young Doctor?
It is definitely NOT worth the money, prestige, or respect one may receive being a physician if you hate your job. Depending on the field you are in, the hours may be terrible, the stress is huge, liability risk never goes away, and reimbursements for all fields continue to plummet. Like anything else, it becomes a job and you must enjoy what you do. Otherwise you may look back on your life and feel it has been a waste, despite the perceived benefits of being a doctor.

Around 65% equities and 35% bonds and a little cash. Nearly all index funds and ETFs. But the percentages you choose and risks you are willing to take should reflect the actual size of your portfolio.

Also, with the help of a lawyer, compare your contract with the other partners' contracts to make sure it is consistent. Find out if there is any type of 'buy in' for shares of the ancillaries (labs, xray, therapy, etc), accounts receivables, or buildings that may be owned by the group. Ask recently made partners if there were any surprises after they completed their two years as an employee. Good luck!

Atlantis
We've been there twice. It's great, but a bit pricey. It has expanded quite a bit in recent years, adding many more water park rides, dolphin encounters (you used to have to do an off site excursion for this), many more upscale restaurants, and more deluxe rooms. The Royal Towers is one of the best places to stay at the resort as well. Tons of pools, great beach, and plenty of activities for all.

Buying now? Heck yeah! Buying VTI and VEU with cash as it accumulates to rebalance when the Dow falls below 7500. A six year low is as close to a fire sale as one can get. Asset allocation remains unchanged, and not selling any fixed income to buy equities, just cash. It's NOT different this time. The blood is on the street and the ducks are quacking! I know it's easier to buy at 10 or 12,000, but now is the time to start adding stocks.

I agree about the bird in hand, but, a mortgage rate at 4.75% fixed is nothing to sneeze at, it gives the only significant tax deduction on interest paid, and the money invested should do better long term invested in diversified index funds (in theory) than 4.75%. Emphasis on the 'long term'. The question is, when does one reach diminishing returns for not paying off the remaining balance on the mortgage (under 100K of principle remaining)?

It all depends on your total balance. 70/30 stocks to bonds will work if the bond amount is high enough that you can live off those dividends, or your 4% drawdown on principle per year is tolerable. Otherwise your allocation should be much more conservative. But hey, if that 30% fixed income is a very high number, you probably have achieved 'critical mass' and don't have to worry about it.

Frequently rebalancing on the market lows (Dow 8000) to try to get back to my desired allocation of 70/30 stocks/bonds. Committed now to wait until after 1/1/09 until next rebalancing, regardless of market values. I'm done trying to time the market!

The question is not whether or not to rebalance (you should rebalance to your desired asset allocation), it is when to rebalance. If your set plan is to evaluate your portfolio and rebalance accordingly annually, biannually, or quarterly, so be it. Stick to it. Just because your allocation may deviate from your desired percentages on a daily basis does not mean you have to rebalance every time it is out of whack. Otherwise, you are market timing.
That being said, I find it incredibly difficult to resist rebalancing frequently when the market bottoms out as often as it has been and potentially missing a great buying opportunity.

I was going to wait until my semi-annual rebalancing date (12/31) but stocks dropped sooo low in October, that on the two low dates, I added to my equities with some dry powder, as well as did some tax loss harvesting. I keep telling myself that the sky is not falling and this time it is not different, and these are bargain prices.

My paycheck gets direct deposit into my NY Tax Exempt MM account. From there, I will write checks greater than $250 and periodically transfer funds into my local checking account for ATM use and online bill pay for smaller checks (HSBC). That way I maximize tax exempt interest earned as soon as the money is dumped into my Vanguard account, rather than waiting for the money to be transferred to Vanguard from checking.

Well, I spoke to VBS this morning and they stated the settlement date for mutual fund sales is three days after the sale, while for the sales and purchases of stocks andETFs is the next day. I sold the mutual funds as planned (to be transacted 4PM today) and bought the ETFs midmorning. To avoid market timing I should have waited until the day's closing, but I did the purchase at the time of the fund sale. The tax loss is realized and will hopefully used to offset some major gains (and 3K in income per year) in the very near future.
