Re: The Boglehead Car -- What is It?
We are an Acura family. Two 2001 TL's and one 2010 TSW. They all still drive like a dream, esp the 2010. Bought it a month ago with only 17,000 miles on it. Looks like a showroom model. I'll drive it "till the wheels fall off" so to speak. We take immaculate care and the mileage on the older one's prove it. Got great deals on all of them. In fact, we played the Boglehead wait game till the right ones came along. We were fortunate we could wait for the good deal.

Re: Portable satellite TV for camping
Frankly I wouldn't mess with satellite unless you were doing the snowbird thing where you were living 6 months straight in a winter snowbird campground in south Texas or Arizona or some such. Lots of campgrounds like the typical KOAs have cable TV hookups. You only need some coax to connect. You can also get a lot of streaming video these days on laptops and iPads including games on ESPN if you have that as part of your regular TV package at home. Of course that requires WiFi or 3G connection at the campground. And finally you can get local TV over the air with a regular antenna. Is it really going to be worth your time and money to subscribe to a satellite service and get all the gear just for camping? texasdiver, thanks for the response....

We camp in our travel trailer and want to get TV for college football games, etc.
I see a lot of different options on the internet but would rather not spend a fortune if we don't have too.
Any bogleheads available that would like to share their experience or comments?
Thanks in advance!

OK, the hubby and I are watching Lost on Netflix. We are on Season 3 out of 6. Please don't tell me how it will end.
Just tell me if it is going to be worth the wait.
PS: Season 3 is dragging a little.....this is why I am asking.
By the way, speaking of tv, we bought an antenna and get several channels HD clear. Purchased it at Walmart for less than $40.00. We have Netflix (8.00/mo) and Amazon (79.00/yr and includes prime shipping) unlimited streaming.
We will cancel cable at a savings of 65.00/mo.

"Harry Crews was a prolific novelist whose often freakish characters populate a strange, violent, and darkly humorous South. I agree about the exposure in company stock. We get a employer stock match in our 401K and I keep no more than 10% max and that's pushing the limit for me. When I am getting close to my 10% risk tolerance, I shift /sell within my 401K to my other fund. It costs me 5 cents per share to do this. To me, money well spent.
Our company stock fell from the 70.00 range to 20.00 range in one day because of bad news and resignation of a couple of "higher ups". There were a lot of employees looking to retire on their company stock portfolio.Don't ever believe it will never happen to your company. You would only be fooling yourself.
Take this forum's advise.

Hi birdy-
I am sorry to hear about your job loss. I would think an ultrasound position would be fairly easy to find depending on where you live, esp if a larger city. Outpatient facilities, some MD offices, maybe even part-time for now that could turn into full-time when they realize what a good employee they have.
Hold your head up high. You will look back on this and realize why it happened. Hopefully, for the better.
I wish you luck in finding another job if that is what you want.

Re: Non-Compete Agreement
I'm sorry for all the people who have written in here about bad experiences with non-compete agreements. I have signed several in my career and they have never caused me any problem. In two cases we were asked to sign new non-competes right before some major changes were made in company policy, one of which was right before massive layoffs. However in neither case was anyone sued or hassled about the non-compete. One guy who started calling in to the office to recruit active employees was sent a stern letter to stop. Now, I think they were deceptive to portray the non-compete as routine when all along they knew the changes were coming, but it wasn't as evil as some have made it out to be. I think there is a current fashion in these things ...

Just curious...what would keep a physician from having privileges at all local hospitals in the city of their practice. Do they choose to allow the hospitalists to care for their patients? Do they make more money staying in the office seeing patients? Or, is it deeper than that?
I personally would want my PCP coming to see me in the hospital, but a lot of PCP's don't and let the hospitalist groups manage the inpatient care.

My parents beat the crap out of their kids. I know that doesn't work. A mantra I've used is to give the kids a sense of control. Note the words "sense of". Examples: a. You can clean up your room now and be able to have a sleep over tonight or you can clean up your room tomorrow morning, but no sleepover this weekend. It's your choice. b. You can mow the yard today before it rains or you can mow the yard tomorrow while it is raining. It's your choice. c. What would you rather do: Take your bath now and get dessert afterwards or keep playing and take your bath later, but no dessert? I also personally believe that kids are meant to test your limits. So make those limits clear and never never never renege on them. So don't make any ...

I don't see an energy efficient fireplace insert with a blower on your list.
Would probably be a good upgrade in North Carolina in the winter. We have one and it's very stylish looking. We rarely use our central heat in the winter and utility bills are low. We also have property with hardwoods and when one falls we cut it for firewood which saves us from having to buy it.
But, I guess you'd have to have a fireplace first, huh.
Congratulations on your home!!
**Motion detector flood light for sure.
**Check prices online for faux blinds (We purchased from blinds.com and are very happy)

How many Bogleheads pay for cell phone data packages?
I currently have a Verizon LG phone which doesn't require a data package. It is one of only three phones available that did not require the data package. I have unlimited calls and texts but no internet data package. I see some paying upwards of $100 or more per month for this.
Correct me if wrong, but it is my understanding that a data package it is "not" unlimited.
I haven't been able to make that leap. I am curious how many on the forum have done so and why?

Free Audiobooks for iPod
Hello all-
I am looking for the ability to download books onto my iPod and listen audio form. I have read some on http://www.audible.com but it looks like they have a monthly membership fee. There was an app for it on my iPod.
I want to see if there is something available starting at "free" and go from there.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Piano shopping (full sized upright)
My neighbor tunes pianos for a living. He is blind.
Before we bought one, I picked him up and we went to let him play LOTS of pianos. All were used and in homes, not in stores. He plays beautifully and when he played / heard the right one he said this is it. He never knew the asking price of any at the time.
When he said this is it, I told him the price and he said buy it now. I gave him $150 to tune it once home. Still sounds beautiful.
By the way, how often do any of you have your pianos tuned?

Born To Run

Quite interesting if all is true. It's classified as non fiction.

Re: Does anyone own a VitaMix blender?
Ok, I've also looked at the Cuisinart Blend and Cook Soup Maker Model# SBC 1000. It runs ~199.00. Difference that I see is that you have to cut up the ingredients before adding. As you can see, I am a Boglehead and want the best for the money.
One can also make smoothies. It claims to do a good job.
Confusion has set in. So why would I want to spend the money for the VitaMix?
EDIT: Not such good reviews on Amazon!

Well, I found this blender comparison on YouTube by Popular Mechanics. Not sure whether to believe it's really PM but I was shocked at the results.

Austex1:
Thanks for the post and to all others thus far. I don't have a Costco in my city but we have a Sam's. I can check to see if the sell VitaMix. Or, maybe Bed, Bath and Beyond? I will check around.
We do love hot soups, especially tomato, so this could maybe become a kitchen staple. At least we could control the sodium content compared to canned soups, I assume.

Re: Does anyone own a VitaMix blender?
I have been researching VitaMix and see there are different series / types. Am I correct?
Do most of you on the forum that own one have the same series?

How can the $89.00 Ninja compare to the VitaMix? Does anyone own one?ebotrd wrote:I've lusted after a vitamixer for years -- I always mention it when someone asks what I want for birthday/christmas, but no one ever gets me one
However, have yous seen the Ninja? Not sure how it reviews, but looks like it does about anything a vitamixer can and I've recently seen it for $89 at Walmart.
Can it make the "hot" soup like the VitaMix?
