If its been a month, file a claim. I just filed one on an item missing for 8 weeks and got it approved. If its beyond a certain point they basically have to pay it out. This is why I insure anything over 50 bucks value.

I'm sorry this happened. I am sorry that I don't have better news for you but I think you won't be able to get your money back. Paypal allows this sort of thing to go on under the guise of buyer protection, so I wouldn't handle any transaction on Paypal without some sort of intermediary (like eBay). And even then, eBay is leaving Paypal. I know, I ran a business and we tried accepting paypal. We lost $3000 on the first transaction due to this sort of fraud. Totally different than a credit card chargeback which is a reasonable, regulated process.

If you don't receive a confirmation email either check your spam folder or reapply. It seems getting that confirmation email is very critical. They also said you can call your nearest SBA office for support.

It means that you should stay at home and only leave for essentials like food, medicine, fuel, etc. There are many exceptions to the shelter in place order so things will be up and running if it is essential to living. You can leave the house and go on a walk or travel alone or with 1 person you live with, everyone else you must stay 6 feet away from. Its for 3 weeks.KlangFool wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:35 am Folks,
For anyone in the Bay area, could you please explain what does "shelter in place" mean? I googled and read a bunch of articles and I still do not get it.
Does that mean do not go out of your house at all unless for food and supply?
Thanks in advance.

I live in the PGE service area and given what I see, I wouldn't have to stomach to buy it. It is a company everybody hates and is likely to come up in daily conversation with your neighbors. I can't think of a more risky stock to buy. I'd buy GE before I would buy this thing.

Re: Pre-paid Funeral Expenses
Paying in advance doesn't always make sense. I am just dealing with my FIL's burial plot he bought out of state over 30 years ago which he didn't use (he died somewhere else years ago and was buried there). We found the certificate for his purchase in our files which we had totally forgotten about and our only option in that state is to sell the plot back to the cemetery (with interest which is nice). Unless you are fairly situated in one geographic location, advanced in age or ill, or your family is very disorganized and you don't want them to deal with it themselves, I don't think it is worth paying in advance. Granted, in theory, paying in advance is a good thing to do and considerate for everyone, but sometimes it doesn't happen as plan...

Pretty funny saying Oakland isn't real Bay Area. I live here and am actually OK with that statement! Based on purely anecdotal information, it seems to me a lot of people are considering moving to somewhere between the East Bay and Sacramento-- Lodi, Manteca, Stockton, Vacaville etc. I think in 10-20 years the whole SF Bay/Sacramento corridor will be continuous. I rent, and am just going to save until buying makes sense to me. I still see too much irrational behavior in people buying homes in Oakland (people buying crap homes for insane prices, paying way over asking, etc), and irrational behavior in people moving to somewhat, but not substantially less expensive homes in the middle of nowhere. Many people are just leaving the area o...

Re: Fee Only Variable Annuities
The devil is in the details-- if you read the prospectus, there are additional fees when you select low fee funds for the Nationwide Annuity (anything under .35). You end up paying a minimum of .52 total.
Vanguards fee's are .15 but their funds expenses are around .40. So around .45 total
Fidelity's Personal Retirement Annuity is .25 (.15 if you have over 1M) but their index funds are now very cheap, .12 or .14. so around .37-39 total. So it looks like Fidelity may win here expense wise.

In the sense that it is a investment product with a insurance wrapper, then I suppose you could call it that. I researched these a while ago to see if I wanted to add one to my company's 401K, and I don't necessarily think they are bad investments, probably better and less complicated than a variable annuity, but I couldn't find one we had access to that paid more than a bond fund.

I have the same "problem". Business w/30 people, with salaries ranging from 35k to 250k, and I still can't get people to invest that much. We have 100% match up to 3%. At most, people kick in 3%. Me and my wife max out our contributions but nobody else comes even close to our contributions. I've been asked my opinion and given my advice, but mostly find only people 5 or less years from retirement will listen much. You can share the info with people, but its really up to them what to do with the information. Kills me, because I do love my employees, but what can you do?

I live in Oakland and rent. Me and wife are 6 figure earners/health care professionals. The houses we want to buy are all at least 1.2-1.5m. At least in Oakland, there is definitely a bubble-- people coming in and offering 100-300k over asking. Until that stuff cools off, at least here, I won't consider buying. But if you look one town over, the situation is different. There are a lot of micro-climates real estate wise. I'm going to be enjoying my apartment and saving until I have enough free cash to get what I want or we'll just continue renting. If things still continue to be nuts, I may move somewhere further out a couple hours from the Bay area (Sonoma/Mendocino/etc).

Its great you are frugal and happy-- wonderful way to be! For the taxable, You could do a Robo-Advisor like Betterment, Motif (personally I use this), Wealthfront, or even Fidelity has one. Or you could just do it yourself by opening a Brokerage and do the 3 fund portfolio type thing.

In a similar situation myself except I live in a HCOL area so I am envious your expenses are less than 10k annually. I'd start kicking into a taxable account. I was loathe to do it at first but once I did the research as to some of the other options for a situation like ours (e.g. annuities, CDs, etc) I decided the best avenue was the taxable. I'm in Oakland and pay $5000/mo for a apartment I love and have decided not to buy until things cool down. I wouldn't delve into buying anything right now with the market as it is here because its insane (people paying 10, 20, even 50% over asking for so-so houses).
