Buy long duration treasury when the rate hike peaks ( i know it's timing ) ! Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury Index Fund (EDV) Yes, if we get another 40 year run of declining rates, the longer the duration the better....Could definitely out-perform equities in the right scenario ... Since you brought up the "T" word, how did you land on your preference for a 20 year duration (EDV), vs 6.5 year (BND) versus say 2 years...? What will you look for to let you know we're at the peak of rate hikes...? No one knows it's based on assumption the rates will peak and reverse the trend , it depends on responsible fiscal policy and monetary policy . Holding US govt bond or holding cash is the same . if you timeline is over 20 years and wan...

Re: Today's T-bill auction results
If I had a child starting college in two years, none of their tuition money would be in stocks. I'm conservative, though. Anyway, this is getting off-topic for the thread. not to derail the thread I am only saving 30-40K per child in 529 plan , rest will come form my cash flow . I am using this account not to just save for my kids but grand kids or future gennerations ( since it's tax free growth if used for college ) also secure act allows for the ROTH conversion of 529 plan for kids/ future generations After 15 years, 529 plan assets can be rolled over to a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, subject to annual Roth contribution limits and an aggregate lifetime limit of $35,000. Rollovers cannot exceed the aggregate before the 5-year period end...

The bond market is pricing in a rate peak in mid 2023. https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html?redirect=/trading/interest-rates/countdown-to-fomc.html Does it mean i should buy large amount of bond funds this summer for my kids college fund ? The bond market has already priced it in, so the bond fund price already reflects that expectation. Of course, there are always new expectations coming along... nobody knows what will happen. I wouldn't be basing the college fund investment on trying to time the bond market. How far away is college? the college is 2 year and 8 years away with a 60/40 portfolio in 529 plan. 60/40 portfolio with two years to go is really aggressive. Correct the goal is to move it to 40/60 ...

@manuvns, on top of the relatively low lifetime limit, I don't believe that $35k figure is subject to inflation adjustment going forward. Hmm proably good idea to rollover when people are retired . they can roll over maximum $6.5K in a year according to rules You can only rollover as much as you're qualified to contribute that year and it is subtracted from your annual max. It's not $6500 in addition to your normal Roth contribution. A retired person probably won't have earned income to make them qualified to contribute. Also, it can only be rolled to the beneficiary, not the account owner. You can change the beneficiary name to the account owner, but it's believed that resets the 15 year clock. hmm the 529 never made sense for me , i woul...

You have to pay $2k in property tax by 12/31 or you will owe a significant penalty. Your choices: 1. drive to the government office or use public transit, go in and pay. $2 cost either way. 2. use the government office e-check service, $2 cost. 3. use bank online bill-pay, FREE, but via USmail with the usual delivery concerns. 3.1 use bank online bill-pay with the two-installment (no extra cost) method, $1k now $1k due by next March. But make both payments "now", at least one day apart, to minimize the odds of USmail failure to deliver one of the payments by 12/31. But double the odds of one failure, and one failure would require follow-up. 4. use a credit card, but the fee will exceed your best reward card compensation by at lea...

I'm looking to diversify my savings from stocks only buy buying 3 single family homes to rent out. The city I live in will continue to experience exponential growth. The challenge here, any anywhere, is finding RE that is cash flow positive (monthly income minus ALL expenses, but not including tax benefits or appreciation). However with 20% DP I can come out a little bit ahead for a cash buffer. I've owned rentals in the past, so have experience. My timeline is 10 to 15 years, so not overly concerned with attempting to time the market. I believe these homes will be worth more money in the future, even if they do come down a little further in price. 2 similar homes sold this week so even with high rates, there are buyers due to limited supp...
