Portfolio Charts is a great tool for this. You can select one of their pre-built portfolios, or use their Portfolio Growth calculator with a custom portfolio you define.

You can include gold as a part of your portfolio without considering it an "end of the world" / hyperinflation hedge. I was having a similar issue when trying to calculate my CD's value. What threw me off was the start date (Sept 3rd instead of the first of the month).
