Re: Retirement Wthdrawal Services
Definitely can be done by a FA with account access. MIL had this; BIL & I decided on a particular FA to manage her portfolio for family harmony (worth every penny for this reason), the FA really did well, ahead of overall market for the 8 years he managed portfolio after fees, (this included a loss on a Lehman bond). He did a lot of service by communicating to declining MIL and with BIL & I reviewing quarterly statements and all trades. He set up monthly withdrarals for each year and would have funds avialable for specific needs like big travel trip. Liked it enough that I ponder for wife's needs should I pass/decline its a toss up between this specific FA, VG Personal Services, or Charles Schwab.

Re: For people with EVs what do you for road trips?
I had an early BEV, a Ford Focus Electric, definitely not a road trip car-limited range, had a Ford Fusion Energi PHEV, loved it, no range limit and 70% of the time was electric, gone in an accident. Have a '23 Chevy Bolt, excellent car, OK on the road, good range and we will use it from LA to San Diego but not SF. WE have a Jeep Cherokee for road trips, very comfortable cruising and goes off road, carries kayaks and bicycles when we camp and it tows. Slept in it overnight at Burning Man, would not take an EV there. Right now I see the sweet spot is an EV around town and an ICE road car/SUV/pickup, ICE cars can be fairly efficient at continuous road speeds. Just wish there were more smaller EVs, miss the Smart for 2 and Fiat 500 EV. I WANT ...

Re: Buy EV before my tax credit eligibility runs out? Which one?
Recently aquired (well, my wife did) a 2023 Chevy Bolt, really enjoying it. For around town I prefer it to a Tesla which I would have got for my wife if she wanted. GM paid for the charger install. If you plan to be on the road a lot the Tesla cars are good and the Tesla charging system (which will soom be avialable to Ford & GM) is a real resource. This is my 2nd EV and also had a PHEV, a Ford Fusion Energi. All in all the PHEVs are a good approach for those with limited home charging and never having to worry about charging on the road. Daughter in law has a Subaru PHEV and I love it. Some tax credits for the right PHEVs.

Recently spent 3 weeks in Spain, have been to all the places mentioned at some time. Make sure to have enough time for Barcelona, loved the Gothic Quarter, Gaudi church and other buildings. Easy to get around by subway. All the named places are worth seeing, would also add Toledo (if you are going near Madrid stay there) and Ronda if you can get there.

Just today dialed into the CA LA County line to 'register', got call sent (al digital, never a live person), to the delay/excuse line, the message said duty cancelled unless they contact me, had to fill out certification and mail it in. I am over 70 and put 'excuse' on mine but stated that I have a surgury due later in the year and MAY be avialable some time after that. Not sure if I will hear from them again but will deal with it as conditions merit. Nice thing was all automated, never had to explain except for a short written note.

None of the above? With the funds needed in 6 years it seems like BND and intemediate bond funds would not have enough time to recover from possible losses if interest rates stay high and espically if they increase. I would look for a money market fund or a 5 yr CD as FI becasue of the term.

Yes, it might be better to have VTI/VOO Totl US mkt/S&P500 alone but this works fine for us. No plan to use this fund, it is our 'emergency'/unplanned expense, will leave it to the kids if we don't need it.

My son has expressed a strong interest in learning to trade stocks (and maybe worse, but I willn't go there) and is looking for a course or training. While I am a near Bogglehead (hold mostly Wellesley & Wellington and balanced fund but all low fee B&H) I avoid much trading and would steer him away but I am sure he will not listen. But, since he is looking for a course or training if I pay for the class then I would have some impact on the input he would receive. So is there anything I can fund to keep headed in a less bad direction?

I think I know a good bit about kayaks (yakers=kayaker  ) I currently own two folding kayaks and an inflatable and a wood kayak I made. I just gave my son my old Klepper double and owned several plastic & fiberglass boats and paddled probably a hunderd at demo days. So much depends on what you want to do. Folding boats can be remarkably seaworthy, going accross the Atlantic. They can be sailed and stable for fishing. They are used by comandos and arctic expeditions. They take a bit of work, read The Complete Folding Kayaker by Ralph Diaz, a bit old but full of useful information. Inflatables are good too, we have (my wife's boat choice) a Hobbie. Very good boat. Heavier than my Folbot single but much than my old Klepper double. A ...

Seems like a useless study, nothing to learn, the group studied are not the super wealthy and I/we have no business investing like the seriously wealthy. Many years ago a good friend of mine was one of several private investors for one of the worlds wealthy families. He was one of 4 doing only commodities. They also had teams doing real estate, buying companies, banking and substantial geographic diversification. Well tuned into taxes as well and an understanding of insurance (Lloyds) beyond amateurs. I learned nothing for my modest portfolio. My approach was LYBM/control costs, works for me, couldn't be more different than the seriously wealthy.

As far as I can tell, Total Bond Market Fund holds no emerging market bonds. The new Multi-Sector fund can hold emerging markets bonds. That's a significant increase in risk, which doesn't fit with your "hold FI mostly for ballast". I think a lot of people's definition of "ballast" included having a yield that would roughly keep up with inflation, and that's understandably driving a lot of the demand for products like this. Well, that is exactly what is driving me. It would be nice if my fixed income keep up with inflation and even better to beat it a bit, but how much...
