Re: Where to cap 529 contributions?

G) Or, you can use your taxable account to max up your kids' Roth IRAs when they started working. That get you the tax free growth of 50 years versus 10+ years of 529. This is very good point and I totally missed this :( Be careful with this plan. Just as KF is fond of throwing out dire scenarios and "being prepared" for such scenarios -- let me do the same. Say you dutifully funded your kid's Roth annual contributions for about 10 years, that's $100k or so of "your" money that you intended to benefit your kid. But then your kid gets divorced, and $50k of that goes to the ex. How would "you" feel about it? At one side we cannot plan for all scenarios, however what you told is certainly possible. I would be ext...

Re: Seattle area residents, how should I think about your housing market? [Potential move for job]

I would rent for a year. I got suckered in by the high pay. We moved there, bought a house. The first winter it was 32 degrees and cloudy, 24/7, for five straight months. The traffic is noticeably awful, some of the worst in the country. You’d think that it would be better on the weekends, but it isn’t, because that’s when they do road construction and block off streets for innumerable street fairs. And the job was terrible. We committed to being there for four years to cash in on the RSUs, but after the first year, we knew we weren’t going to stay. We made it 3 1/2 years, then bailed. Anyway, some people really like it there, but it isn’t one of those places that’s universally loved. The only real advice I have is to not have a commute wh...

Moving to CA from WA - 529 question

Iam a WA resident for the past 3 years and opened 529 first time in 2020 with Fidelity for my 7 year old and invested in Fidelity NH Total Market Index Portfolio. My initial plan was to hold the 100% stock until elementary is over then make it as 70% stock:30% bond on middle school and 100% on bonds on high school. Iam moving to CA and heard no state tax benefit of opening CA 529 scholarshare from tax stand point. I saw CA have lot of good funds too. My question is 1. Shall I open the CA 529 and fund 2032/2033 Enrollment Portfolio Passive which 70:30 and let it ride until high school and move the fidelity 529 to this CA's 529 to keep 1 single account ? 2. Continue in Fidelity NH Total Market Index itself and add bonds later ? Fidelity is on...

401K Excess deferral cheque - less than expected

Hi

I have job switch in the middle of the year.
I contributed to jobs as follows

Job 1 - $16362.44
Job 2 - $4490.04

I realized I made $352.44 excess and so requested Merrill to withdraw excess.
Merrill asked Both W2 and a letter of request.

I sent requested w2 and clearly mentioned excess is 352.44 however they sent the cheque amount as $345.82

Please let me know the below

1. Do I need to ask Merrill for $6.62 again or (its loss of my investment and so sent only $345.82) ?
Letter says $345.82 as ordinary income 100% taxable.

2. Turbotax telling me create 1099 other income form and enter the amount withdraw to avoid amended return next year when 1099-r issued !!!!!!
What to enter - $352.44 or $345.82 ??

Safeco coverage is very attractive for price I pay elsewhere. Independent Agents will help you get the price however if you buy directly then you will get some extra discounts. However independent agents are good so that you felt you have someone specially working for you when needed. Safeco is very famous in Seattle, CA/WA area Also, in Safeco if they ever increase the price (unlikely) like 40% then you give call to Agent or company customer support then they will create a ticket for their pricing team to analyze and come back with justification or reduce the price. Try disconnect and use your partner name to get as new connection.
As soon as you are moved to retention dept, they might offer better price if one there.
Otherwise disconnect and get it in partner name

Re: Fidelity and free Turbotax offer

dollar_elbow wrote: Tue Feb 08, 2022 10:28 am I got an offer on the Fidelity website for free Turbotax Premier federal and state (i.e. $0 instead of $69) and I tried logging in and it seems to be true. Does anyone know if there are any catches to this offer?

I see the 20% discount offer every year, but I was surprised to be offered a seemingly totally free version since whilst I hold a sizable balance at Fidelity, I'm not in the private client wealth category.
Both are possible - online as well as desktop. I use online

In the last 2 years, all the tech-savvy people are using Signal.

Bye-bye WhatsApp.

BTW: WhatsApp was NOT developed by Fakebook.
While Signal may be true, I know 1 country which uses whatsapp all day - India.
If india changes to signal then i see big user base impact and not seeing that so far !!!!!
I havent bought the FB stock nor planned to buy one except VTI have
