Re: Password manager?
That means that if such malware is on your computer, the bad guys can get your passwords as they're put on the clipboard. Yes, they won't be exactly right if you add or subtract a couple characters here and there, but you've spotted the bad guys almost the entire password, so brute force attacks would be quick. Plus, you're kinda losing all semblance of convenience relative to alternative products out there that don't use the clipboard. I suggest reading http://keepass.info/help/base/security.html and http://keepass.info/help/v2/autotype_obfuscation.html to see why KeePass is easily the best password manager for Windows. From a security standpoint is handily beats LastPass. From a user perspective and ease of use, that is a more personal o...

Problems. The application works on my laptop, but not my corporate desktop. I get an error message that says" Cannot contact Yahoo! Finance, please check your internet connection." I have had my corporate IT person come by and he's told me it's because we connect to the internet through a proxy server. There appear to be no tools, options or properties menu that could fix this. Is there a solution? Unfortunately, not at this time. I have added a feature request (http://code.google.com/p/mypersonalindex/issues/list) to add this at a later date. Still a great program. It took a little bit to get use to the UI changes, but it works well. I have a question about rebalancing. I set the target and a rebalancing band of just 1%. But, nothing happens when the assets go out of the band. Do I need to put something under the Trades tab? None of the items in the Action dropdown seem appropriate. If you want the program to automatically create a purchase/sell trade to balance your AA, you need to do the following: Portfolio -> Edit Portfolio -> Trades Choose the security your want to automatically rebalance (you will need to add a trade to every security if you want to entire portfolio to rebalance) Add a trade The action should be Purchase % of asset class target The % of target should be 1...

Thank you for all the thoughtful responses. I certainly did not want this question to be viewed as political. My takeaway is that I grew up with a lot of technologies and health advances that I now take for granted. The airplane example may have been a bad choice since we have not had a pressing need to travel faster. Changes in my lifetime that I take for granted: The wealth of knowledge in advancing the lifespan of humans. The ability for a small business owner to provide services to people all over the world Having so much knowledge available for retrieval from almost any device There are many areas where I think we could still make great strides (many of them political so I won't list them). But my original notion that I was being naive...

"Innovation Starvation" - Are we in a rut?
As a person in their mid-20s, I am interested to hear the opinions of those older than me who have lived through much of the mid-to-late 1900s. I ran into this article today and I am truly wondering, are humans (especially the Western world) in a rut? Article: http://johniac.posterous.com/innovation-starvation-world-policy-institute Still, I worry that our inability to match the achievements of the 1960s space program might be symptomatic of a general failure of our society to get big things done. My parents and grandparents witnessed the creation of the airplane, the automobile, nuclear energy, and the computer to name only a few. Scientists and engineers who came of age during the first half of the 20th century could look forward to build...

Is your application open source? If so I would think that there could be "ports" to the various *BSD operating systems or the Linux distributions. The source code repository is available from http://code.google.com/p/mypersonalindex/source/browse/ and briefly looking through a few files I saw no license statements, but you are using the Qt GUI toolkit that have either LGPL or a commercial license. It is, on the left side of the website it shows the license. I realize I should also have it in all the source code files as well. I have a portable Linux version that could easily be used in a package manager for the different unix/BSD operating systems. The ER is only used in 2 places. First, it is shown on the securities view for reference. 1. I'm finding that mechanism a little bit awkward to use. On the left-hand side, considering the user is already on the tab for the portfolio in question, why not make it 'Other Portfolios' and list them there for easy toggling? 'Portfolio' seems redundant since the user has already selected it with the tab. If you had say 15 portfolios to compare it'd be a bit of a nightmare to 'activate them'. 2. If someone customizes their list of statistics, what's the possibility of porting that setting across all portfolios? Maybe a 'copy settings from [portfolio]' dropdown? 3. Also, when you chart two or more portfolios at once, how hard would it be to get the 'hover-over' to describe the performance for both portfolios for whatever day you've got ...

On the left side, there is a drop down with the portfolio name. Simply change the drop down to a different portfolio and check additional items. It is the same as the compare window before, but accessible without opening a new window. This only works when viewing performance, charting, correlations, and statistics. If this isn't clear, let me know and I will explain further.zeugmite wrote:Oh wow this is a nice update. Still playing with it... Volkswagen Reliability
I am in the market for a new car and the Volkswagen GTI seems to fit all the criteria. My wishlist is a more upscale, small car which is fun to drive (under 30k). However, history shows Volkswagens need a bit more "care" than other brands. That is, fixes for issues from the factory and more repairs over time than competitors. However, I consistently see the GTI rated as a best pick for the segment. Is this just a stigma of the Volkswagen of old? Anyone care to share their experience with their Volkswagen?
If this was also a concern for you, what did you ultimately end up getting instead?

For example, can an employee have all of them, 1 and 2 only, 2 and 3 only, etc? Does having more than one change the standard limits? I realize this is more a CPA question, but I just want a general idea. Thanks.

I am trying to figure out the best option for a tax-deferred account in a small company (~3-4 employees). Which option is best in this situation, a 401(k), SEP IRA, Simple IRA, etc? The requirements in order of importance: Low Cost Excellent tax-deferred space in terms of $$ Low expense funds Places like Employee Fiduciary have minimum fees of $1,500 which is too much in this case. 1. Do you Bogleheads subscribe to the idea of overbought/underbought markets? Are you still buying equity now after the meteoric rise of the market because there is some plan you have to buy in periodically no matter what? Here is how I always look at it. Do you think you are smarter and more knowledgeable than big institutional traders? There are plenty of people buying now and I can say without a doubt small investors make up very little of the market. So if these traders are buying stocks at this level, what do you know that makes the price too high? Have you analyzed balance sheets? Calculated future earnings for each company? If not, then buy and hold now. The market goes up more often than declines, so every day you wait you are stat...

A couple thoughts:
1. I would give it a couple months to a year to see what kind of tracking error it gets. This will also allow for volume to pick up.
2. This is excellent even in a tax-advantaged account. It allows for commission free re-balancing if you already have a Schwab account. Of course Vanguard now offers free trades on their ETFs, so no advantage if you are already with Vanguard.
3. I don't trust Schwab expense ratios over the long term. But since this would be in a tax-advantaged account, you can always sell commission free.

Most mutual funds have a higher ER which will drag performance slightly each year, most likely negating any bid-ask spread. At least that is how I always looked at it.

I would read more about what a Boglehead is to figure out if you are in the right place.livesoft wrote:I wish people who started threads asking rhetorical questions would make it clear ....

If all they do is go on the internet, you can install a lightweight Linux distribution and just have 1 icon on the desktop, "The Internet." It shouldn't be hard to learn and they can use Firefox same as Windows XP.
I disagree that elderly can't use Linux. As long as they know click here for websites and here for e-mail, etc,the operating system itself shouldn't matter.

There is a difference between dividends reinvested and nav adjusted for dividends. Yahoo finance includes the dividend adjustment in its adjusted closing price. It does NOT include dividend reinvestment, which would entail the purchase of additional shares.livesoft wrote:Yahoo has closing prices as well as "adjusted closing prices" which include dividends reinvested. You can download the data and make all the charts you want.
My free application allows you to perform this adjustment at http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18086 by setting up automatic dividends reinvestments.
