Re: Nationwide Private Client

We came from Liberty Mutual and have been with NWPC 4 years. I have liked them as they seem comfortable handling $5.0 M umbrella policies and houses north of $1.0 M. We had two boys in college driving and they seemed to handle them in stride as well. We do have a ski boat and they did give us a high...

Re: Utilizing a trainer to maintain fitness in retirement

I'm 52 and use a trainer, however, it is in a group setting with a maximum 8 people. We workout 3 times/week for 1 hour. Resistance training is a big part of it with squats, deadlifts, pull-ups, and bench presses. A lot of focus is on the core as well. It's fun with a group. I pay $259/month and con...

Re: Opinions on SafeCo?

Liberty Mutual bought Safeco 5-7 years ago. Both companies utilize the same claims, underwriting, etc. It's just the marketing approach that's different. I use to work for Liberty and have had their insurance for years. A very stable company with good customer service. You can't go wrong.

Re: Diminishing Returns of Fuel Efficiency

Interesting article as I have never thought about it this way before. I have a SUV for pulling a boat and hauling the family around occasionally. I've "ran the numbers" in an attempt to justify a 2nd more fuel efficient car when I didn't need the SUV. I could never make it work. Of course it all dep...

Re: sprinkler system question

I would go for it! The worse thing that could happen is somebody could damage a head. Then the water would gush out of that zone only for the amount the timer is on. No huge water loss there. What I worry about is the water inside the house when I'm on vacation. I've heard too many stories of people...

Re: Convince me to choose a Suburban over a Sequoia

I like the OP have a major distrust with GM, especially after the recent recall situation. We have a 2008 Sequoia with 95 K on it. We have done nothing to it other than PM, tires, and brakes. It will tow 9600 lbs. and is a true beast. Couldn't be happier. The only advantage the Burb has is the extra...

Re: Sprinkler System's Annual Backflow Testing

I lived in a municipality that required testing. I did it for the first year then stopped doing it to see what would happen. About every 6 months I would get a nasty letter, but nothing beyond that. The letters never escalated, it was always the same letter. I did this for 5 years and nothing happen...

Re: Auto repair - "Threads getting thin in oil pan drain plu

I had this happen to my Odyssey. It was about $300 for a new oil pan installed. However, I wanted to point out that this changed my way of thinking. I used to take it to the Jiffy Lubes, etc when this happened. The skill level at these places is highly questionable. Now I have my mechanic change the...

Re: I need a quality lawnmower

I was in the market to buy a self-propelled mower a few years ago. I had owned some cheap ones in the past and was looking for a better quality. What I learned is that there is a difference between a Toro at Home Depot and a Toro at a lawn equipment supplier. I ended up buying a Toro sr4 super recyc...

Asset Based Long Term Care Insurance

Did a search on the forum and didn't find much on this. I believe it's a relatively new product. Here's an article I found on it: http://www.thestreet.com/story/11619211/1/baby-boomer-trend-asset-based-long-term-care-insurance.html We were presented this by our financial advisor (I know, take with a...

Re: $200 K available to pay off mortgage- what to do?

After reading the responses, I have to say I am in awe of the time and thought that went into answering my question from fellow Bogleheads. One of the points I got out of the responses is that it re-emphasized that you can't predict the future. I was hoping that there would be an easy answer and som...

$200 K available to pay off mortgage- what to do?

I'm relatively new to the forum and read some recommended books. I get it that passive, low cost index funds are the way to go. I have most of our retirement funds in VTSAX and VBTLX. I have a specific situation though and admit to not completely understanding how bonds work. We have a $700,000, 7/1...

Re: Is Amica coverage worth 25% more than State Farm?

I had Liberty Mutual for years. About 10 years ago, I heard good things about Amica and got a quote that was better than Liberty, so I went with them. My wife then got rear ended. I don't know if they still do this, but they contracted out the claims service for our car. He was absolutely terrible a...

Re: Executive Counseling Services

Thanks for the replies and giving me the confidence to Stay the Course. Here's my biggest rub: If I were to pay an attorney $3500, he would represent my best interest. I'm paying these people $3500 and I'm not (to me) getting my best interest represented. He's not even willing to help us follow our ...

Re: Better to be at home with older or younger kids?

Our Story... we have 2 boys and both worked until they were 10 and 12 and had some very nice nannies/preschools/private schools throughout that time. My wife gradually became busier at work, and I began handling more of the daily activities at home until at one point, I couldn't do either my job/cha...

Executive Counseling Services

Noob Here... I recently discovered this amazing website about 3 months ago after getting some conflicting information from an “expert” and wanting to do some research on my own. Recently, I have read “The Boglehead’s Guide….” and utilized “Common Sense on Mutual Funds” as a reference. Previously, Sc...
