First time home buyer. Should we sell stocks for down payment on regular loan or get an FHA loan?

My wife and I are considering buying our first home. We have more than enough tax-exposed stocks and ETFs to make the down payment on a regular loan (with >$40,000 in stocks and ETFs left over); all stock and ETF sales would result in long-term capital gains. Should we sell stocks and ETFs to make t...

Re: Schwab or Vanguard

Regarding Schwab's very low ERs, do you think they'll be able to maintain them over the long run?... I'm considering leaving Vanguard, and Schwab is on my short list of brokerages I may go to.

Re: POLL: May leave VBS. Which brokerage(s) do you invest wi

Some of you have asked why I'm considering leaving VBS. It's a combination of personal experiences with VBS and complaints I've seen here in the Bogleheads forum. The common thread between my experiences and those reported in these forums is account information integrity. I've had a couple issues wi...

Re: Schwab or Vanguard

It just so happens that I currently have a poll running that asks Bogleheads which brokerage(s) they use. http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtop ... 1&t=132598

At the moment, Vanguard is ahead of Schwab.

POLL: May leave VBS. Which brokerage(s) do you invest with?

I'm considering leaving Vanguard Brokerage Services, where all of my taxable and tax-sheltered investments are held (all ETFs with a handful of individual stocks). So I'm wondering which brokerage(s) Bogleheads tend to lean toward, if any. If you invest with more than one, please select multiple one...

Re: Mel's Unloved Mid-Caps for international too?

...next to Schwab's international mid/small-cap ETF (SCHC; 0.20% ER; which, now that I look at it, has a bigger mid-cap tilt, 72%.. hmmm... something to think about I guess), Vanguard's VSS has the lowest ER (0.25%) that I know of. ...And as I look even more at Schwab's international mid/small-cap ...

Re: Mel's Unloved Mid-Caps for international too?

Thanks all for the great conversation in response to my question about tilting international funds toward mid-caps! I realize that VSS is a small-cap fund in name. However, according to Morningstar's portfolio breakdown, it is actually tilted (quite heavily) toward mid-caps (64% mid; 30% small), whi...

Mel's Unloved Mid-Caps for international too?

So I've recently taken Mel's Unloved Mid-Caps to heart for the domestic part of my portfolio, in which I hold Vanguard's VTI with a heavy tilt toward mid-caps using VO. Is there any reason I shouldn't also follow this approach for the international part of my portfolio, in which I would hold Vanguar...

Wash sale consequences when trading only within a Roth IRA?

If I sell shares of an ETF at a loss in a Roth IRA and subsequently buy the same ETF back in the exact same Roth IRA at a lower price before the 30-day wait period for wash sales, will this have any tax consequences when withdrawing from this IRA in retirement? Concerning my tax-exposed investments,...
