Thank you, everybody, for your thoughts. If I move, it will be for personal reasons (family and romantic partner). I may not be able to wait until 65! :happy
In my county in PA, the local tax is an "earned income" tax only. Currently 1.25%. It does not apply to interest, dividends, capital gains, 401k withdraws, or pensions.

I'm 58 and retired 5 years ago. I don't even worry about trying to predict it. What's the point?

I just withdrawal 2.5-3% depending on what we need or want.

I'm confident that will work for us. If not, we'll adjust.

DRIPs made sense when trades cost 10-25 dollars or more.

IMO, if you can make free trades, there is no reason to use them at any point in your life.

Re: Why We Expect Inflation to Fall in 2023

I suggest you read this post from yesterday. It's very helpful, IMO.

Essentially, if inflation stays at its current monthly level, the annual inflation rate will drop to about 4.1% by July next year.

And if the factors mentioned in the linked article pan out, it will drop even more.

Re: "Stability of Principal" vs "Stability of Income" Investors

Stability of income is very important. If you have stability of Income then market gyrations does not affect you. This is why Iam against bond funds, there is no stability of income. https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/VBTLX/dividends/dividend-growth Yield on vbtlx went from 5% in 2003 to 2% in 2021. Then it promptly drops 20% in 2022. It is as if somebody stole from you. I would prefer stock index funds even VTI grows dividends 3-5% every year whereas bnd you lose the interest yield. Personally I have VT and bunch of individual bonds which will pay me back the principle when I get Social security. I am also in the camp that bond funds are NOT fixed income. But I am not opposed to them. They just take some predictability out of projections. In...

Re: Are We Over-investing in 401k's?

It is my personal opinion that everyone who can afford it should have SOME savings/investments in a taxable account. When I started investing, I didn't have access to a traditional 401k, let alone a Roth. All of my savings were taxable. But as time went on and 401ks and such became available, I still put money into my taxable account. And I'm glad I did. They offer much more flexibility and liquidity. That's how I paid for all of our vehicles and made down payment on our house. And probably the biggest benefit of all, it allowed me to retire early. Taxes are a bit higher occasionally (compared to a Roth), but not that bad in reality because of the capital gains and dividend exemptions. Bond interest does get taxed as income, but municipal f...

I was going to say that's a question that can only be answered in hindsight.

But looking back on my life, I can't even answer it now!

I retired 4 years ago at 53, and sometimes I think I saved too much. I saved 10-12% early on.

I had no idea at the time that I would later be making 6-7X my early salary. so my early savings didn't mean much. But they did get the compounding ball rolling. Later on, I saved 50-60% some years. My salary was heavily bonus based then.

On the other hand, wife and I are comfortable with our current lifestyle. And not working is NICE! I think I we'll be fine going forward. But you never know. I might need to pay for a million dollar medical procedure at some point.

I'm not understanding how that's possible; what bonds are paying a rate greater than inflation? Well, ancient I-bonds, but otherwise?
Here's an example with easy math that's pretty close:

2% yield on $5 million => $100,000 income.

3% yield on $4 million => $120,000 income.

I struggled with this decision for a long time. I eventually decided to go entirely with bond funds, and so far, I am happy with it.

I take my early retirement withdrawals based on interest and dividends (yes, I know, it's just a psychological crutch, but it works for me.)

And in the years before I retired, I bought a lot of short term bond funds.

The crazy thing is, my networth is down over 20% in the last few years, but my income is UP at a greater rate than inflation.

I guess you could achieve the same effect with individual bonds, but that's a hassle I don't want to deal with.

I literally put them into a shoe box. Just layer them in there and stack them up.

It creates a great chronological order.

I find scanning tedious, and a waste of time.

A couple times a year, I carefully turn the box upside down and dump it out on a table.

Then I look through the oldest (now on top), and if I find something that might be worth keeping, like something with a 3 year warranty or something that might have tax implications, I keep it and set it off to the side. That pile goes back into the bottom of the box. The rest get tossed.

And then I start filling it up again.

For someone spending most of their life as a child, then through a conservatory school, then a career playing a piano professionally, well, they would most likely have the opinion that any digital piano is worthless, regardless of the advertised terabytes of waveform samples from multi-million dollar pianos it has and weighted key action/technology to be like the real thing, of which, of course, it can never be. That was four days ago. Today the Fed changed its tune. I wonder if she did too?

I refuse to subscribe to just one of those publications, or even to two of them, because the article I want will often turn out to be from some other publication that I haven't subscribed to.

That's actually the way AOL started out back in the day.

It worked great for a while.

Free markets are wonderful things.

If it works out for them, great.

If it doesn't, they can lower their price.

Re: Single Serving Pod Brewers (coffee, tea, etc.)?

Many pod type brewers allow you to control the amount of water used in each cup. You might experiment with using less water.

Re: How much of the historical average return comes from dividends?

It could be argued that the dividend contribution is zero. If the dividends weren't paid, the stock would be worth more.

I would be helpful if you explained a bit more clearly exactly what you are talking about.

Re: My Pension will not have COLA. Plz suggest a Portfolio to act as my COLA

There are no guarantees, unfortunately.

"Working longer" might not be a bad idea, but it is not related (or correlated) to inflation in any way.

I would say an 80/20 or 90/10 stock/bond portfolio, with rebalancing, might be a good approach for a pension supplemental portfolio.
