Re: using uber versus buying a car

My brother in law has been car free for 5 years with no regrets. He has no kids. He Ubers all the time. If he needs to go a on a road trip he rents a car. At one time he was doing the car share program but I think that stopped once Uber became so abundant. There are grocery delivery services now too...

Re: One week family vacation in Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area

It depends on where you are staying and what you want to do. Also depends on age of kids. If you are just staying at the hotel all day to use beach and pool and have somewhere to walk around like south beach or sunny isles then a car is useless. Also check the hotel overnight parking rates. Some hot...

Re: How Did You End Up Here?

I joined in 2012. I had a financial advisor who invested my money for me. After seeing the fees that were being taken out each month I decided there needs to be a better way.

Combination of google, whitecoatinvestor and a message board for dentists.

Re: Investing in a dental implant or ?

Dentist here: Without going into a whole explanation. Under most circumstances a dental implant is the best way to replace a single missing tooth By law, the dentist must give you a copy of your xrays if you request them. They are also allowed to charge you a small fee for duplication If you cannot ...

Re: Advice on how to change dentists

As a practicing dentist who works with these Medicare plans occasionally I will say that the coverage is very limited. If you require extensive work in the future, you may want to go back to your old dentist that you trust and just pay full fee out of pocket. (If they are smart they will welcome you...

Re: 529 vs Florida Pre-pay

Diasurfer's post from this thread (about halfway down) was most helpful to me. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=207667 Regardless of what you chose, your son should thank you for thinking of these things so early. All the best! :happy (FWIW, we have both) Thanks for the link.

529 vs Florida Pre-pay

To all Floridians, Has anyone done a good analysis on the comparison of investing in 529 plan vs Florida prepay? I started a 529 plan for my son who is 6 years old. I was speaking to a colleague yesterday who was convinced the Florida pre-pay is a better deal. I currently have 529 plan invested at 6...

Re: Trying to understand my wife's dental school loans

This type of dental school debt is becoming more and more common, especially for dentists that go on to specialize. Eventually an orthodontist should be able to make over $400k/year. But I’m not sure how many years it would take to grow a practice to that level. Setting up a new dental office or buy...

Re: $600 night guard for teeth grinding, really?

Dentist here: Yes the materials cost very little. If they are sent out to a lab for fabrication it may cost the dentist about $100. So the difference in cost is based on the dentists chair time and his or her expertise. If you don't value their advise, time and knowledge then do as others have sugge...

Re: Americas best 401-k ?

I'm using this company to set up my small business 401k.

The yearly fees are $2000 (I have 8 employees).

They have very low expense ratios on the most common vanguard funds as well as target retirement date plans.

So far I've been very happy.

Thanks for the advice. I figured that canceling it was the best option. Just needed some confirmation on my decision.

Should I cancel my Whole Life Policy?

Age: 37. Married with 1 child age 2. State: FL. Tax Bracket: 33% Current Term Life Insurance: 1.5 million. Currently maxing out 401K, Backdoor Roth, and HSA for self and wife. I foolishly purchased a Whole Life Life Insurance policy in 2012. My Whole Life Policy is for $250,000. So far I have paid $...

HSA Contributions - Self Employed

I am self employed and my wife is an employee of the business. We are the only employees that participate in the HSA plan.

Does it make a significant difference if I make the HSA contributions through payroll under Sect 125 (pre-tax) or if I do a direct "employer" contribution?

Thanks.

SIMPLE IRA Help for my business

Long timer lurker, first time poster. go easy on me. I've decided against doing a 401K for my business until I am out of debt. My goal right now is to finish the bank loan. I read the IRS rules for SIMPLE IRA multiple times and spoke to two different advisors on this plan. I am still confused. I und...

Re: True cost of an implant

Dentist here. The estimate is on the high side. We do both parts in my office, surgery and restoration. You should be able to get everything start to finish for under $4000 for a back tooth. You can shop around and find another office that does everything. Or tell your dentist that the specialist fe...
