Now that I no longer make a rent payment, my checks get used even less. They are from 3 addresses ago and when Washington Mutual still existed. Never had one not cashed, though.
I pretty much only use them for camping fees now.
I see no reason to "balance" my checkbook.

Remember, don't buy so much life insurance that the beneficiary doesn't miss you ;)

I think a 20 yr $250k term for each would be a good way to go. Plenty cheap to purchase and would protect either of you, regarding mortgage and retirement savings, if someone passes before 50.
