Re: Share your networth progression

I haven't kept track, but the post got me wondering. Here are estimates... 2008: -35,000. Got first job, started paying back student loans. Age 32. 2009: +65,000 2010: +265,000 2011: +465,000 2012: +715,000 Bought house, paid cash. 2013: +990,000 2014: +1,292,000 1/1/2015: 1,830,000 5/13/2015: 2,140,000 Age 39. This was a fun post, made me realize I've come a long way, and is good for reflection. I've made my fair share of mistakes, but overall, things are progressing well! You're the winner?! Some context... Finished residency in 2008, so salary went up a lot. Still lived resident lifestyle the past seven years, so all the extra has gone to savings. Re: What has happened to Vanguard Customer Service??!!

I have had a similar bad experience with Vanguard this year. Passive aggressive representatives and extremely long hold times. The icing on the cake was that a rep transferred my to another department and I had a two hour hold time. When the next rep answered, he told me they connected me to the wrong department.

I have transferred all of my assets to another custodian. Kind of made me sad because I had been with Vanguard for 32 years. I even got a transfer bonus!

This is interesting. I am in a similar situation. We have always lived in a MCOL to HCOL area but took a gap year this year and now temporarily live in a VHCOL area. We did this just for the experience and also because the area has a high school for kids with dyslexia (just started freshman year). We were planning on going back to our home, but the experience has been really good (enjoying the geography, city, and the school has been great). I am going through the pros and cons of staying here or returning home. I felt very well off in our home town. If we go back, there is no need to work again. I would have free time and we could travel the summers, etc. In this new location, I don't feel wealthy at all. Everything costs more, and if we s...

I have a Herman Miller chair.

I have an Uplift desk and alternate between standing and sitting on a stability ball.

Total price between the desk and stability ball: cheaper than the chair.

I will pile it on for Bloomington. I have lived here 13 years and it is a phenomenal community. Very high amount of culture per capita--ethnic food, music, opera, etc. The biggest negative is humidity in the summers. I like cardio, and in the summer it is done either early in the morning or indoors. This lasts two or three months. Winters are mild.

One hour to the IND airport door to door.
Lots of grocery stores including a coop. No Costco but there is Sam's.
Large lake for recreation. There is also Brown County State Park 20 min away--great mountain biking and hiking trails there.

I am going to Kauai on Monday. Will be there for two weeks. I paid for a car about 3 weeks ago, and it was roughly $2500. Prior to getting the car, I had read the news about how expensive car rentals were. I had given serious consideration to purchasing a car and shipping it back to the US. It isn't that expensive to buy a car in Hawaii, nor is it very expensive to ship it to Tacoma. Ultimately, I did not do that because it seemed like a bit of a hassle. But, if you need a new car and live near Tacoma...

Today marks my first day as a member of Bogleheads.org. My net worth is $2,000,000.00 this year and my profession is critical care RN. I have reached this goal as sole wage earner of my house and based on an income of 60k / year plus overtime and weekend program brining my income to 100k. I just reached the age of 52 and I save 40% of my gross income currently. My early years as an RN in my 20's I earned about 50K and saved only 10% of my income until age 30. From 30 to 45 I earned about 80k per year saving 15 to 20%. I remember reaching 100k saved for retirement right before the crash of 2008 - 2009 and for 14 years after the returns and growth of my investments exceeded 7% ranging 7 to 14% consistently. The past two months have been really nice, with decreased ED utilization and thus less imaging. I thought it might offer a time for reflection on how services are utilized, both amongst physicians and patients.

I am in private practice, and my group has a contract with a large hospital system where nearly everyone else is employed. My group will take about a 20% pay decrease this year, if things return to near normal in June. We also have years where we make much more than our baseline pay because we are business owners and we reap the rewards. As an employed physician, there is no way I would accept a pay cut, unless I thought the organization was truly at risk (only for job preservation). My employed physician friends haven't received pay increases in recent years, when profits have been huge. The systems need to absorb the blow when times are tough and they can reap the benefits when times are better. You became employed to reduce risk, for sit...

Despite what you may think, our volumes are way down since we have cancelled all non urgent outpt studies (non urgent mri, breast screening mammograms, anything they could wait a few months) . Likely will influence future compensation/raises, but unchanged for the time being and volumes could surge after this. Also could be "repurposed" and assigned to a more clinical (pt facing) role. I've lived in Indiana most of my life--if you are in the southern portion of the state, then here are some suggestions: Bloomington is a college town and is a cultural oasis for the state. You should stroll through the campus and enjoy the restaurants downtown. If you like coffee, Hopscotch makes the best espresso based drinks, anywhere. I spend a lot of time in Seattle, and I'm always amazed how much better the coffee is at Hopscotch, versus a city that is known for such. Brown County has an enormous mountain bike trail network and nice State Park. You could bring a bike and do some phenomenal single track. I occasionaly think about the answer to this question because I know the common refrain is that most people are not saving enough, living beyond their means, etc. I would say I know quite a few Bogleheads (the majority of our friends and some work associates). They may not identify themselves as such, or even know the term, but they do live their lives accordingly. My circle of friends is largely physicians and professors in a mid-size college town in the midwest. So, maybe my experience is skewed by the fact that most are high earners in a MCOL town and keeping up with Joneses really isn't a thing around here. On the other hand, I can identify a few who are anti-Boglehead and live beyond their means. But, I really do think the savers outnu...

Re: Buying More Paper Assets or Rental Properties

If I were answering this question for myself, this is what I would want to know:

1. Do I enjoy owing rental property?
2. How much debt will I assume while buying another rental, relative to my investable assets/net worth? Is that debt easily managed in a downturn scenario?
3. What are the future prospects for the property/region in which I am buying?

For me, I despise owning property, so I wouldn't do it. I don't know what you mean by paper assets, but if you mean equities, that is definitely my personal preference. If you mean lottery tickets, then I guess I'd get the rental property.

If you ever have another chest x-ray and there is a pulmonary nodule (many reasons for this), the radiologist might want a comparison exam to determine whether the nodule is new or stable. Since your old study is reportedly normal, the radiologist would then know that the nodule is a new finding and the workup could proceed from there.

That being said, I would just get rid of an old x-ray because the clutter is not worth it.

Re: $800,000 Windfall. Love the 3-Fund portfolio approach. Wealth Managers in contact

If your time frame is 10-25 years, why do you even care if there is a market downturn? That just wouldn't be a concern of mine.

When has a financial adviser foreseen a market downturn and acted on a client's behalf? I don't think many advisers predicted the Great Recession, nor will they precisely time the next recession. All they can say is there will be one, but everyone already knows that.

Your inclination is correct--financial advisers typically charge a lot for questionable benefit. They will extract fees from you one way or another, even the ones that ostensibly don't "double dip". If I were you, I'd learn more about the 3-fund portfolio.

Good luck!
