Never compare a mutual fund to an etf because the former isn't priced through the day but only hours after close of market.Trillotrix wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:01 pm That's likely the case, I've just been looking at differences day by day, and I notice that although VOO rises on some days, the state street S&P 500 falls. I'm assuming that this is an erroneous assumption and I should be looking at how they perform over longer periods of time.

By the same token only having enough to support your current spending is perilous if you have need of money for something else so with normal events my pension and social security will cover it but if I have physical problems I will spend 10k or 20k a month for the very top notch home care if I want because I have the money and any I don't need goes to the family and that's fine too.

On their web site it states:

https://www.tsp.gov/tsp-basics/move-money-into-tsp/You can roll over money from eligible retirement plans, such as a 401(k), 403(b), or traditional IRA, to your existing TSP account. There are multiple advantages to rollover contributions to the TSP, and you can use this option even after you retire.

Re: TSP loans don't seem like that bad of an idea
Regarding the have to pay back immediately that is not the case anywhere due to changes in the law and in particular the rules for the tsp are:
https://www.tsp.gov/tsp-loans/If you have an outstanding loan when you separate from service, you have three options:
Keep the loan active by setting up monthly payments by check, money order, or recurring direct debits. The payment will be changed to a monthly schedule, if necessary; however, the maximum time limit for paying off your loan will still apply.
Pay off the loan by the required deadline.
Allow the loan to be foreclosed and accept any taxable portion of the outstanding balance and accrued interest as taxable income.

At the tier that I'm thinking of moving over, the bonus would be over 1%. Wondering how it works out profitable for TT? What if I were to just park all the funds at TT in a 3-month T-bill ETF and let it sit there for 12 months and then withdraw all (or most) of the money after the 12 months? Curious how others might value the match in this situation: Option 1) Transfer rollover IRA of 200k for a ~6k match and let sit at robinhood for 5 years Option 2) Roll IRA into employer 401k to enable backdoor roth contributions for next 5 years I'm keeping my pre-tax rollover funds in my employer's 401k plan. I value a Roth bonus more than a Traditional bonus, and I'm not willing to give up being able to convert a backdoor Roth for the next several years . The conversion step of the backdoor Roth doesn't have to happen in the same year as contribution. You can do the bonus and simply defer the conversion for 5 years. Meanwhile, keep that money in bonds (in accordance with overall asset allocation). The income tax you'll pay on 5 years of ...

There is no such thing as a backdoor roth contribution only roth contributions or traditional contributions so your 2023 roth contribution would become a 2023 traditional contribution then the conversion you do as part of the backdoor will be in the tax year it is performed or 2024 according to your plan.

There is no such thing as backdoor roth as some special irs feature there are only:
1. Contributions which since people often don't know whether or how much can be contributed or deducted until their taxes are prepared so there is an extension to tax day
2. Conversions which can be done at any time and have no relationship to contributions other than there must be money to convert and so are done on a tax year basis

I agree and in my case even though I have some risk factors most of that would resolve as medications which doesn't affect part b and I'm saving at least $125 per month over regular plan g which in these early years has been a big saving because I haven't even exceeded the part b deductible although only time will tell which would have been better.Svensk Anga wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 10:13 amI think that you don't need perfect health to make G-HD the better choice. Be wary in the 12% bracket if you have significant qualified dividends from taxable stock funds because those conversion might be a higher tax cost than it seems on a first glance due to bumping out qdivs from the 0% bracket to the 15% resulting in a net 27% tax.steadyosmosis wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 11:00 am I learned that I should Roth-convert within the 12% federal tax bracket.

Re: TIAA 403b: Rollover options to Vanguard after exit (Roth Backdoor hurdle)
Your options are:
1. Traditional or rollover ira which would interfere with backdoor roth
2. Roth ira which would be taxable and if you are in an income situation requiring backdoor probably a bad idea
3. Regular brokerage which would be taxable and penalty if under 59.5 and the worst choice
4. Solo 401k which would be good if you had self employment income that would justify it
I would look into the suggestion above and roll into the existing plan at a new job if you have one or just leave it where it is if it's a good plan and quit getting too worried about consolidation.

Remember that with either plan there is a part b deductible which for this year is $240 that neither pays so in my first couple years I haven't exceeded that so it didn't matter which I had other than ghd was cheaper and I had to pay some things out of pocket.kavm wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 9:44 pm From reading the discussion, the rational choice for us (1-2 years away) would be G-HD. How much weight to put on this convenience factor is not clear? But, it might push me towards plan G.

You will need to clarify your question so are you referring to a roth ira because there is no income ceiling for contributing to a traditional and if roth then you should possibly recharacterize the contribution to traditional and convert depending on what other ira amounts you hold.
