Re: SWAN ETF - 10% Leaps / 90% Treasuries

Are there any tax benefits to a strategy like this in an ETF wrapper vs. doing it myself? If I have to roll LEAP contracts myself that's quite the tax drag.

Re: 6-month CD at 2.4%

Well, some people feel the need for diversification, especially since CDs are arguably safer than a prime money market fund. They most certainly are safer than prime money market, but when t-bills are yielding more with better tax treatment and no early penalties (direct CDs) or liquidity issues (b...

Re: How do you trade ETFs exactly like mutual funds?

I thought MOC orders were heavily discouraged for ETFs: https://www.forbes.com/sites/riabiz/2011/03/01/the-basic-etf-trading-practices-that-can-save-your-clients-money/#249340bd66e0 I would go with explicit MOO if I was buying in one account and selling in another so as to execute at the same price,...

Re: Should I, and how, act on changes in managing diet and health?

I am on a similar diet, for similar reasons, and one thing that strikes me is how variable the prices can be. The foods I eat can't effectively be stored long term, and can have very good / very bad years and corresponding price fluctuations (beef and pork in particular). I have joked about hedging ...

Re: Benefits/longevity of more expensive ($300+) mens dress shoes?

Just find something that fits well and can be repaired, either blake stiched or good year welted. I've always been surprised at how the internet loves certain brands of shoes - does everyone have the same foot shape? Whatever last AE uses for their balmoral oxfords just doesn't quite do it for me. M...

Re: Intermittent Fasting

I do keto + intermittent fasting. I always skip breakfast, and about half the time I skip lunch opting for a large coffee with a lot of cream. When I do eat lunch it is usually a medium salad. Dinner is my heavy meal of the day. I went from over 300lbs and an A1C of 11.0 as a type 2 diabetic on medi...

Re: Quick question on taxable account in early retirement

I've been doing some reading on draw down strategies for early retirement and trying to get a clearer picture on how a taxable account is treated at tax time. Assuming your only source of cash flow is from your taxable account, am I correct in my understanding that only the capital gains portion of...

Re: $860 Million ETF Trade

Why is SPY ER 9 bps? Aren't most others in this category 3/4?? Lack of inertia on the part of some of their investors. It is one of the older ETFs so although they've decreased the ER significantly they can still charge a small premium and it's apparently worth their while. It's also structured as ...

Re: Sell individual stock, or index fund

Yeah that's probably the correct answer. It does bring up a question though: If I'm adding large amounts to taxable accounts each year, and aggressively harvesting losses, and can only use 3K per year carried forward against regular income... would there be a point you would say "enough" with accrui...

Re: Sell individual stock, or index fund

My question isn't about buying. I've been selling out of individual stock since 2012. It's about selling something to establish "1X" vs "6X" the amount of capital at a higher cost basis. Given the historical volatility of the replacement assets (in this case VTI for the single stock replacement and ...

Sell individual stock, or index fund

I have around $12k in harvested ST capital losses this year. I have $100K cost basis in a fund at VG that is worth about $112k. I could sell the whole lot and buy something similar but not identical. I think I'd swap my Vanguard Developed Markets index for maybe total international or similar. Alter...

Re: How to short TSLA?

As others have discussed, selling short outright is quite dangerous. Options are usually the safer bet, but there's a wrinkle with TSLA. It's trading at $327 or so and it's very volatile. This makes a single contract quite a bit of money to play around with - you aren't shorting a share or ten, you ...

I'd probably buy deep in the money puts. No margin account required but you will need a lower level options account.
