Re: When calculating net worth, how do you value your house?

We take the Zillow value and subtract 15-20%. Helps account for realtor fees, comp/pricing inaccuracies, and repair costs that might be necessary when getting the house ready for sale. We pay less attention to net worth each year and focus more on invested assets & cash as we'll always need a place ...

Re: When was the most stressful financial time in your life?

Right now. Scheduled for heart surgery at a young age. Chances of a positive outcome are high but getting my affairs in order just in case. All of the books on personal finance and investing have prepared me for a potentially catastrophic event like this. Strong savings rate, proper term coverage at...

Re: Engagement Ring Saving

I agree with previous replies advocating for online savings accounts. Don't sweat the three month rule - no one follows that. It is possible to save quite a bit on the stone by forgoing the traditional local jeweler or main stream chain jeweler. Blue Nile, James Allen, and Whiteflash are reputable s...

Re: [What will you do differently in] 2016

Simplify holdings. Would like to consolidate from 5 to 4 funds in 2016. Really can not go any lower than that due to multiple accounts, retirement plan options, etc. Increase savings rate slightly (see below) from about 31% to 33% via increases to taxable account. Add 50% of any cashflow savings to...

Nope. I have monitoring through Amex. Not worth the hassle of disabling if I want to take advantage of an offer.

Re: Where do you keep/park your emergency fund?

1st tier: CapOne 360
2nd tier: VTSAX

My philosophy for 2nd tier is keep double whatever you would normally need in the market so that in the event of a substantial pullback you'll still be able to access the appropriate amount of cash.

Re: Amica Insurance

I'm an Amica customer - auto/home/umbrella/life. Their phone response is light years ahead of e-mail. I call the 800 number and always have great experiences. Also, thanks for the reminder about the security discount - I forgot to send my certificate in two years ago - I've missed out on a whole $10!

Re: Amica auto insurance quote very high?

Currently have auto, homeowners and umbrella with Amica. For comparison, we had State Farm standalone auto before without any multi line discounts and it was significantly more expensive for less coverage than we now have at Amica. To echo other posters' sentiments: you're most likely a victim of th...
