Re: Question for Car experts - how urgent/important are these maintenance items

I'd say yes to the belt and no to the coolant. I always like to have my belt changed when it begins to crack. I feel uneasy driving with cracks in the belt. I've never had a coolant flush on my car and I have 124K miles on it.

Re: Does anybody replace HVAC capacitors presumptively before they fail as part of maintenance?

You could buy a multitester that measures capacitance and test them from time to time. Capacitors on the A/C condenser should not go bad often. If the tech would say it's going bad then I'd say "OK, thanks for telling me but I'll replace it myself". The tech that checks my A/C and furnace each year ...

I've never used a Taser but I think that would be a good choice that's non -lethal. They are legal for self-defense almost anywhere but you could contact local law enforcement to make absolutely sure. I've read they're effective up to 15ft.

Not necessary. I put leftover gas in my lawn mowers that is well over a year old and the mowers run fine, and since small engines such as lawn mowers seem to be more sensitive to bad gas than cars your car should run fine after only 2 months.

Unsure of buying used car vs. keeping my current one

I currently drive a 2007 Toyota Corolla with 120K miles. It is still running fine although I may need tires and brake pads when I get it inspected soon. I know of a great deal on a used car however. The used car I saw is a 2007 Chevy Cobalt. Amazingly the car only has 29K miles on it and the price i...

Independents are cheaper in most cases as long as you drive a make of car that is common. If you drive a luxury brand that is mostly driven by those in the upper income level (such as Mercedes) then you probably want to go to a dealer as the independent doesn't have as much knowledge about those.
