for a $300,000+ IRA, would it make sense to convert $150,000 to a Roth in 2016 and $150,000 in 2017 to lower the tax burden?

it's the only IRA and all money is "pre-tax" from a 401(k) rollover.

other income:
$24k social security
$12k pension
$10k RMDs from the IRA
