Re: Landlords: How are you doing this year?

One property (2 units), lots of maintenance requests this year, for dumb stuff... E.g. tenant was turning key wrong way to unlock door, tenant closes window too hard and glass shatters, tenant reports garage door broken (replaced remote batteries). Have 2nd kid due in August and no longer want to d...

Re: Moved all Retirement Plans to Cash Last Wed Based on Tepper's Call

I too tried and failed to time this recent market. I was convinced the April rally was insane and the market had no reason to go up like it did. So I sold everything March 5th so I'd be out for the next leg down. I was pumped when the following day the market dropped a half a percent. Then the next ...

Re: Selling home - low ball negotiation

I'd counter 10k above asking price. They mocked you and they should know. Oh c'mon now. They put in an offer, If seller doesn't like it they can just ignore it. It looks to me like the potential buyer offered more money for the house than anyone else on earth so why be offended? When I bought my ho...

That button only allowed you to apply for the advance not the actual loan. That is how it works. I received the advance about 2 weeks later. Have not received further communication about actually applying for the loan itself. So you only completed the short advance request form ($10,000) and never ...

Re: HSA question

Thank you guys so much for the info and your opinions, I value the advice on this forum. I double checked the max out of pocket and yes it appears it's less for the HSA. For the EPO it shows $7,900/$15,800 (incl ded). The max out of pocket for the HSA shows $6,500/$13,100, but does not say (incl ded...

No more children planned. Nothing major last year as far as health issues so I'm pretty sure the HSA would have worked better for last year but who knows about next year??

Re: HSA question

For the HSA: Ind/Family deductible = $3,000/$6,000, Max Out of Pocket = $6,500/$13,100, Co-Ins = 50% For the EPO: Ind/Fam deductible = $2,200/$4,400, Max Out of Pocket = $7,900/$15,800, Co-Ins = 30% Also it's a family plan. Wife runs a small business and I handle the family health insurance. I try t...

HSA question

Health insurance options have changed at my small company and I'm now being offered an HSA option for the first time. I'm a little bit familiar with it but I'm still kinda ignorant. The reduced monthly premiums add up to a savings of $3,400 per year vs the traditional plan. There won't be any other ...

Re: Anyone own a Roth oil tank?

The Roth tank is a no-brainer. For an extra $500 you get the warranty and a 2 million dollar insurance policy. Just make sure it's a certified installer and you're all set. I've never heard of ROTH not honoring the warranty and honestly they just don't leak. I handle remediations when oil tanks leak...

Re: 401k Plan Conversion!

Congrats on having that pay off for you. I tried this in 2014; had a whole package of information from Vanguard, all the work done. It saved me a ton in fees and also saved the company money. They took it as I was a complainer and cancelled the whole 401k. They pointed to the fact that I only put in...

Re: What's your company 401k contribution

It used to be a match up to 3% of my salary. Then I suggested we change 401k companies because ours was terrible (over 2% expense ratios) and they shut it down completely because I "complained". I was suggesting a simple IRA through Vanguard which would have saved me and the company a ton of money -...

[quote]I predict we will see more and more posts like this until the next stock market crash, after which some of the same posters will say "no stocks for me ever again". You are right about that no doubt. From my standpoint though I started investing in 1999, just in time for the tech bubble to pop...

Re: How to weather the upcoming bond crash in my 401k

I get what your saying, why invest in an asset class that will probably tread water at best or likely get it's ass kicked. I was asking myself the same question a couple years ago. I'm no expert but from what I read we're at a 30 year low in interset rates, meaning rates will almost certainly go up ...

Re: Have any of you dollar cost averaged in over 5 years

I had $10,000 to invest in 2002, which was a lot of money to me at the time. The market was coming back after the Enron/accounting scandel so I figured it was a good time to invest it all, no DCA. Right after I bought into the market (all stocks) the double dip hit and my $10,000 was $6,900 in no ti...

Re: How to leave my financial adviser

I have seen a few posts about how to leave your FA and I just don't get it. What's the problem? Try this: Run some numbers through a compound interest calculator. Enter how much you'll contribute on avg per year, how many years you plan on investing, and then see what a difference 1.6% in fees will ...

Re: 401k terminated with no notice

Not lucky at all, it was in the offer when I accepted the job. If a boss is reducing an employees benefit I think it's common courtesy to let the employee(s) know. I asked the VP how he would feel if I took another job and gave him no notice. No two weeks notice, nothing....just walked out. He just ...

In my case the letter from Principal dated Dec 9th said the plan is being terminated. It doesn't say if it already is or what exact date it will be. I called Monday morning to request a rollover to Vanguard and by Tuesday it's already cashed out and in the process of being wired to Vanguard. The Pri...

Good point. This is probably why it's mandatory to notify participants 60 days prior to termination. I'll call dept of labor or IRS for the question of legality and take your advise on calling vanguard. Thanks.

Correct, the funds are still there and ill be able to transfer. I was told by someone at vanguard that an employer must by law give at least 60 days notice prior to termination. 401k terminated with no notice

My employer terminated our 401k with no notice. In fact I learned of this from a former employee who received his letter from principal before I did. From what I read this is illegal. I work at a very small company (4 people) and I am the only one who has money in our 401K plan. It's a terrible plan held by Principal where my best option is an S&P500 INDEX fund that has an expense ratio of 1.66% I've tried to convince the boss to change to a better plan like Employee Fiduciary to...
