Re: The best game-changing financial advice you ever received (or "discovered")

I heard this on Scott Galloway podcast a few months ago..."even God cannot beat dollar cost averaging into low cost index funds." I passed it along to my son and he listened to the podcast 3 times and repeats that quote constantly. Someone told me about 40 years ago (as he was applying for a very low paying second job) if you have a variable income (job), dont base your lifestyle off of the high level income. When I moved to a variable income job, I used that advice plus using high income periods of time to pay as much cash as possible for new cars and then finance the balance for 36 months and pay that off early. In other words minimize debt and maximize cash and use for cash purchases and investment. Start early when saving for ...

Re: 2022 Ford Maverick Megathread...;-)

Ordered Maverick XLT Hybrid in Jan '23. Picked it up Nov 29...10 months later.

Worth the wait. Exactly what I wanted/needed. Very economical around town. On the highway it gets about 36-38mpg at 70mph. Enough cab space for us. I am 6'7" and fit comfortably. Bed is small but useful.

Dealer charged MSRP. Added a bed liner and top.

Have NO REGRETS, only positive so far.

Re: Need Help Finding a Hobby

I work from home and have the following hobbies:

1. Gardening
2. Biking
3. Strength training
4. Train spotting (web)
5. Electric bass and sometimes guitar.
6. Reading
7. Astronomy

Obviously cannot do all at once, but work in the biking or strength training early morning. Just getting back into gardening now that spring is around the corner. Electric bass is done until cold weather. Train spotting daily on the web. Reading most days.

Work is the primary task from 7am til 5am but with WFH, I am very efficient which gives time for other interests.

Two things to celebrate PI day:

1. Thin crust 16" pizza from local C-store for $3.14. Actually it is very good.
2. Using my Hemmi 250 slide rule for certain calculations, but then again, it is used most days.

This is an incredibly interesting thread. Meg, my best wishes to you in the short term. You have issues to face now. My rule for a career is what I call the "Sunday night rule". How do you feel on Sunday at 9pm. Ready to go back to work? It is obvious what the answer is to that question for you. As sales as my career, let me ask you this...why not go out and pursue new business? It can be very frustrating and very rewarding. It might get you out of the open concept environment at your office. I am coaching a young sales person who cannot stand to be in the office. My advise was to get out and make sales presentation. You are currently managing existing accounts (and from your posts are quite good at it). I am intrigued by your vis...

Re: Cancer Diagnosis Hubby

I travelled this route 25 years ago. Plenty of good suggestions have been made. By all means consult an Estate Lawyer. We were fortunate that very close family friends handled that for us. I also consulted with a financial planner. This forum is more "do it yourself" but that was prior to this forum and quite frankly it was assuring to have data presented which gave me a clear picture of what I would be facing (financially). By all means, take care of yourself, as best you can physically and emotionally. For me family, friends, and faith were strong foundations. Be completely honest with yourself and your spouse. Consult the physicians and determine what is going to happen and when. What are the odds. Ours were 100% incurable and ...

Re: What got you out of poverty?

No poverty but we were poor...just didnt realize it at the time! Mom and Dad owned a small grocery store in a town of 125 population. Strong work ethic instilled by my parents. Biggest "privilege" in my life was my parents. No doubt. I worked as a child $3 per week in summer in family store, so when I baled hay for $1.50 per hour (late 60s) it was big money. Learned to save....later in life to invest. Was a pretty good athlete and leveraged that to get a 4 year degree. Was motivated at the right time (early 30s) to change from a job to a career in which I found success. Still at it at age 68 - 34 years. Got lucky. Inheritance from parents was invested and invested wisely. Learned about investing which paid off. Learned to say no t...

Re: What Book Are You Currently Reading? Part VI

I find that the Jesse Stone novels by Lupica are very well written and entertaining.

Loved the television series, which turned me on to the books. Never disappointed.

Currently reading - "Cemetery Road" by Greg Isles. This is a stand alone (non Penn Cage) novel based in a fictional Mississippi town of Bienville. Similar in many ways to his earlier Penn Cage series, this one also deals with the issues and past sins of the Deep South.

Finished reading the Gospel of John and moved on to The Book of Acts (NIV).

Re: What is your favorite book?

Many great books suggested in this thread. Here is one from 2023 which gathered my "book of the year" selection - Dennis LeHane's "Small Mercies". Anything from Michael Connelly or James Lee Burke (primarily Bosch or Dave Robicheaux series) is great if you enjoy mysteries and want to get to "know" a character over the years. Burke's "In the Electric Mist with the Confederate Dead" is perhaps my favorite of his. Lawrence Block has written dozens of novels, exploring the darker characters of New York. John McDonald's Travis McGee series from way back in the 70s/80s were great. Robert Caro's books on LBJ (not LeBron) were outstanding (note...I have only read "Master of the Senate" and "The...

I have not read the entire thread, but have you considered NW Indiana?

If trips to Chicago are required, then it is less than an hour to downtown, and certain communities have South Shore rail service (Michigan City, Chesterton). Cost of living is considerably less than Chicago, particularly on property taxes. My son lives in Chicago, I live in Valparaiso, where he grew up and he cant wait to move back.

Yes, there will be a few months of winter, but no terrible humidity and no hurricanes.

Good luck on your search.

Also, been a member of our local YMCA for years. The last 4 years I have taken advantage of it nearly daily. Dropped 30 pounds and that has vastly improved the quality of my life.

Planes - often sit outside in summer and watch planes on approach to Midway/chicago and use Flight Aware to see where they came from. Cost is $0. Trains - I am a railfan and subscribe to a service with multiple locations to watch and listen to operations. Cost $8 per month. Currently monitoring Fostoria, Oh. Autos - not a hobby. Boats - love to fish, but will rent a pontoon on vacation fishing trip with my sons. Cost is $500 or so. Other hobbies.... Read about 45 books yearly - $0 - library. Bike - probably $100 per year in tune ups, etc. Electric bass -sunk cost for guitar and amp. No yearly expense other than minimal electricity. Astronomy - sunk cost ($1100) for scope and eyepieces. Avoid further toys. Gardening - probably $200 per year....

The Craftsman snowblower has been a workhorse....acquired it in 2009 when GF promoted me to DH and it came with her! My guess is it over 20 years old. It is seeing some issues this year. Starts on first pull but at the bottom of 11 degree driveway it dies and often doesnt start. Quite a push up the hill.

Anyone know who made the Craftsman models years ago?

Sounds like Ariens is well respected. I have a 21" Ariens lawnmower...about 12 years old and runs well.

Anyone have an idea of why the Craftsman dies at the bottom of the hill?

I was working from home anyway, so no big adjustment. Four years later (has it been that long since COVID hit?) No comment on Memphis as I havent spent time there, but I read a book on the Memphis music scene from the 60s and 70s. That book made me want to go to the museum. Lots of gritty soul music came out of Memphis. There is a definate difference between Motown, Memphis, and the Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP). Never realized it until the book.

Just finished Archer Mayor's "Bomber's Moon"

Joe Gunther is the lead investigator of Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI). He and his team investigate two murders - a drug dealer and a high end thief. His girl friend's daughter, Rachel Reiling is a reporter who teams up with a PI - Sally Kravitz to detail irregularities in a Vermont Prep School. The murders and prep school are intertwined.

Not bad. I like investigator series...I have read two of Mayor's. I like the Vermont setting. While Mayor is no Michael Connelly (who is?) he provides a nice rural setting for his books. The author speaks from experience as he is a death investigator for Vermont Medical Examiner.

Just purchased a new Hybrid Ford Maverick pickup truck from a "one price" dealer. Very satisfied.

Took it in today for liner and top. Salesman said they sold 8 cars Saturday, just him and Sales Manager. I asked why so many and he said "one price" dealer....first I had heard of it until today. They asked about add ons but did not push. I was "Mr. No".

I love the hybrid pickup...first two tanks of gas have been 39.5 and 41.2 MPG. Actual fill up gallons divided into miles driven.

I wanted a small pickup truck and had to wait 10 months for delivery as it is an in demand vehicle.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

"The Unforgotten" a British crime drama featuring a group of cold case detectives in London which each season (6 episodes) track down a cold case, based on the discovery of a body (skeleton) and then tracking down the identity and then following information to investigate the murder. There are usually 3 or 4 possible suspects who were related in some manner to the deceased and so far (into season 3) there are other issues which faced these suspects.

Very formulistic, but well made and enjoyable. Five seasons in total.

Difficult to follow the British accents at times, but other than that an outstanding series.

[Exercises for physical balance]

I took a self test and determined that physical balance needs to be improved.

Let's state this right now...I am NOT seeking medical advise. Let's make this actionable - has anyone had success increasing their balance? I am considering taking a class on flexibility and balance. Is this something which can be improved thru classes or other techniques.

Currently invest in stretching daily, strength training (3x week) and cycling (3x week). But, the balance and flexibility is lacking.

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Re: Getting first real "career" opportunity and will be traveling a lot for work. How should I prepare?

Great advise above. I have been in sales with same company for 33 years. Started out on the road 1-2 nights a week, nearly all driving. Drill down in your meeting about what the sales territory you will be handling and what the expectations are. It is fairly difficult these days securing appointments. I havent been in front of a customer in months. My travel is 30 feet down the hall. Do you have a good vehicle? Or are you supplied a company vehicle? If you supply your own, make sure it can handle the travel expected. I bought a new Ford Taurus before I started. Looking back, it probably wasnt a good idea, but it worked out. Have a toiletry bag always packed. One less thing to deal with. What is the company policy regarding dress code? If su...

Re: Does anyone use professional advisors?

I had similar discussion here a year ago and was searching for a "fee based" advisor. My situation was not as complex as OP, but I had issues to address prior to retirement.

I talked to Vanguard, Fidelity, local companies, my attorney, my accountant, and probably a few others. The accountant gave me good advise for immediate needs. All other "advisors" were looking to run the show for me (no thanks, doing fine and I do not want wish to incur a taxable event).

My suggestion is your tax preparer, if qualified to do so (for complex tax advise).

Investments...can be somewhat simple if you get past the tax issues.

Re: Hey Men, what are you wearing to the gym?

I alternate indoor biking and strength training.

For the indoor biking I wear an Under Armor or similar type sweat wicking shirt. Usually received from DW for birthday or Christmas. For strength training a tee shirt. Shorts have pockets to hold phone and other items.

Regarding tee shirt, usually just a regular comfortable shirt, but one day I wore a "Waffle House" tee. Had a few conversations from people saying they loved the shirt (and the restaurant).

Also wear compression shorts under the shorts.

Dont skimp on the shoes.
