Re: personal capital

I've been reluctant to sign up for Personal Capital because I'm afraid of potential security issues. That concern may or may not be warranted but, considering how many people seem to love the features offered by PC I am surprised Vanguard (or Fidelity, Schwab, TD Ameritrade, etc.) does not offer som...

Re: personal capital

Does Personal Capital work if you have two factor authentication set up on your accounts (Vanguard and bank account)?

Re: Question About Long Term Care

According to this article http://obliviousinvestor.com/buykeep-ltc-insurance/ there is a 15.2% chance to incur a cost that exceeds $250K. With the potential that you may never need to use the insurance, the rates will likely increase over time and the insurance company may fail/default, I'll self in...

Re: Mother-In-Law dying, Wife wants to buy a Porsche

My suggestion, get her to agree to focus on the MIL first and a decision can be made on a Porsche after the stress of the MIL issues are behind you. We all approach finances differently. As mentioned above, your wife's exposure to a QVC addicted parent probably didn't align her with the Boglehead ap...

Re: Fishing Expedition in Roatan or Costa Maya (Day excursion from cruise)

I have been to Roatan by cruise and enjoyed the visit. We did not go fishing but, spent an afternoon at a beach which was absolutely beautiful. I would inquire with the cruise line about fishing options. Another option would be to ask your question on a fishing / boating website. "The Hull Trut...

I would opt for the 36 month CD

Can you share which Credit Union is offering these rates?

Re: Tax Management in preparation for retirement

I have the Bogleheads Guide to Retirement. Guess I will need to pull it out for a refresher.

Considering tdhg566's $4,000 tax surprise and the concerns I've offered in this thread, am I the only one that sees value in paying a professional to get tax planning right prior to retirement?

Re: Tax Management in preparation for retirement

Wizard, Good advice. Thank you. I know I'm a candidate for Roth conversions. I can map this out to age 70 however, one mistake could potentially cost me more in extra taxes paid or opportunity missed than a seconded set of eyes from a professional tax planner would cost. I assume a tax planner would...

Tax Management in preparation for retirement

Like many on the site I have self managed our investments to a target which we expect will carry us through retirement. During the accumulation phase we've worked to keep costs low. I am now within a few years (1-3) of retirement. My focus is on taxes and developing a best strategy for living off th...

Re: TD Ameritrade to buy Scottrade

I have accounts at Vanguard and TD Ameritrade. Both are roughly equal value and have been in place for more than 10 years. Each organization is service oriented and willing to lend a helping hand. When I ask my Vanguard rep a question he rarely offers an immediate answer/solution. He normally needs ...

Re: Fed rate hike's affect to CD

I'm looking for the group's collective experience, knowledge and most importantly your opinion to decide to buy the CD Now or After the anticipated Fed rate hike this summer. I appreciate all the great feedback. I do understand the Fed rate is not directly tied to CD rates. My plan is to have the CD...

Fed rate hike's affect to CD

Hello All, I'm looking for some guidance. To prepare for retirement (approximately 3 years off) I am building a 5 year CD ladder. The last CD was purchased approximately 4-5 months ago before the Fed rate increase. It has a 5 year term and pays 2.35%. Today the same CD through the same institution i...
