Werner Herzog's 'Happy People: A Year in the Taiga', on Amazon Prime. Happy People: A Year in the Taiga is a 2010 documentary film directed by Werner Herzog and Dmitry Vasyukov and produced by Herzog.[2] The film depicts the life of the people in the village of Bakhta (62.464463°N 89.002168°E) at the confluence of the Yenisei and the Bakhta River, in the Siberian taiga. In particular, it focuses on the Russian trappers who hunt for fur animals, such as sable, depicting their cyclical, self-reliant life dealing with the subarctic climate and geographic isolation. Thanks for your research. I am wondering whether Google's implementation of an Android phone as a security key using Google prompts is equivalent to using a Yubikey. Great post, Valuethinker. When I read these days of SPAC-mania, I’m also reminded of Edward Chancellor’s “Devil Take the Hindmost” and speculative bubbles growing and bursting over centuries. Nonetheless, we invest early and often and soldier on as BHs, tuning out the noise. Bernstein's new book, 'The Delusions Of Crowds: Why People Go Mad in Groups', is out next week, Feb 23. “We are the apes who tell stories,” writes William Bernstein. “And no matter how misleading the narrative, if it is compelling enough it will nearly always trump the facts.” As Bernstein shows in his eloquent and persuasive new book, The Delusions of Crowds, throughout human history compelling stories have catalyzed the spread of contagious narratives through suscept...

Re: Anyone else like having passwords that they can remember?
I recommend a system that includes a site-specific "salt" added. For example, pick a word you like. Let's say it's football. Obviously football, Football, and Football!69 are poor choices, likely to be found in commonly available "dictionaries" that provide reverse lookup online, and you'd be sharing them. One data breach and they're in everything you own. If my name was Frank I'd do FrankFootball!bogleheads for this site, FrankFootball!gmail over there, etc. That's unguessable in complexity and is unlikely to expose all your site just from one being compromised. However, 2FA adds a different type of protection. In that case someone stealing ANY of your passwords get them nothing. I also use this with Microsoft Authenti...

Good discussion on the BBC's 'The Briefing Room' (30 minutes) - There was pandemonium on the US stock market when shares in a chain of video game shops went through the roof. At one point GameStop’s stock, which averaged just seven dollars last year, was valued at more than 480 dollars. The frenzy was fuelled by cheerleaders on Reddit. Investors were being encouraged to buy the stock even as it became clear that they would probably lose most of their investment. There was a mood of rebellion online and clear hostility to millionaire hedge fund managers. Then one of the platforms that offered small investors free access to the market said it would temporarily no longer allow new purchases of GameStop stock. This prompted furious claims of un...

Michael Lewis, 'The Premonition, A Pandemic Story'
Looking forward to Michael Lewis' new book, 'The Premonition, A Pandemic Story', due out in May. Last year, when the coronavirus began spreading throughout the United States, Lewis called some of his government sources for “The Fifth Risk.” What he learned was even more disconcerting than the frightening scenario he was reading about in the news. The experts he spoke to were alarmed not just by the government’s failure to contain the virus, but by the possibility that an even more deadly pathogen was on the horizon. “All of them saw this event as a dry run for something much worse that is inevitable, and how do we prepare for it?” Lewis said in an interview last week. “They view the pandemic in the way a body views a vaccine. It’s like prac...

Mr. Bogle’s monster love-child
Jason Zweig on Gamestop - On Jan. 25, Mr. Mattingly was on Bogleheads.org, one of his favorite websites, which advocates long-term investing. There, Mr. Mattingly stumbled on a reference to GameStop’s wild price moves. ... That movement is Mr. Bogle’s monster love-child. It’s the culmination of 45 years of relentless decline in the cost of investing that kicked off when the late Vanguard founder launched the first index mutual fund in 1975. Stock funds used to carry commissions of up to 8% and annual expenses as high as 2%; now you can buy index funds at zero commission and with expenses under 0.05% annually. https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-real-force-driving-the-gamestop-amc-blackberry-revolution-11611965586 (link is currently unlocked)

Stefan Thomas, a German-born programmer living in San Francisco, has two guesses left to figure out a password that is worth, as of this week, about $220 million. The password will let him unlock a small hard drive, known as an IronKey, which contains the private keys to a digital wallet that holds 7,002 Bitcoin. While the price of Bitcoin dropped sharply on Monday, it is still up more than 50 percent from just a month ago when it passed its previous all-time high around $20,000. The advantage of a simple indexed portfolio is that you don't need to listen to financial porn. Rather, you can spend that time devoted to your family or community.
