Re: No-state-income-tax states are not good for retirees.

Its my understanding the some elderly communites are exempt from "public school tax" (my words). So good for you if I move there. But not in the common good. I don't get the short sightedness of that concept.

My point is (if in fact my example is true as told to me by several friends who live in AZ) its a good example of another part of the tax question that I have - its not just about the tax money.

Re: The "Hot Upstairs" Topic

My daughters condo has 20 foot ceilings and an open stairwell to upstairs (no door). We tried practically everything to keep the upstairs and downstairs tempurature about the same.

Finally we installed a DC current, big blade fan. It is a game changer. The DC current model allows it to run 24-7.

Is it perfect - no. Is it better - greatly so.

Think about how much better you want the heat situation and be realistic - would a 50% improvement do for you?

We found there was no magic bullet but did the fan and some vent adjustment and are satisfied.

Re: Need Advice! Just joining the Bogle train

It looks to me like American Funds Mutual Funds are a .58% expense ratio. So by going with something at say Vanguard (like Life Strategy 80/20) you could "save" close to 1/2%. Also the way it appears you have all three accounts with American Funds Mutual Fund so there may be some efficiency placement issues. Normally one might avoid having a mutual fund as such in an after tax account. Since you only have after tax and Roths at this point I'm not exactly sure of placement. Is the a reason you don't have any funds in tax deferred like a Tradional IRA? Is there a match for doing so that might be worth taking (at either workplace)? You might need to provide your justification for all Roth and after tax retirement accounts, which woul...

I've been pretty much staying wtih Total Bond Market (VBTLX) since abut 2000. Its about 45% of my retirement account. We are in retirement and in it in for the long haul with a 3 fund portfolio.

Just curious how others of a similar mindset are doing. After sticking with it for a long time are you at all tempted to "drift away" some how?

Just at here is what the form says

2023 W-4MNP, Minnesota Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments
Pension or Annuity Recipients

Complete Form W-4MNP so the financial institution making these distributions can withhold the correct Minnesota income tax.

I assume "these distributions" means for a Pension or Annuity (Roth IRA are not mentioned).

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but check the wieght of each bike you are considering. Many, if not most, can be real beasts. Yes the bike is assisted and will be fine but my wife has trouble at stops and start because the bike is so heavy (and it is the light of the Aventon models). I have a large sized (same bike and there are times (loading into our minivan and stops and starts were I struggle some as well).

I assume more expensive ones are "generally" lighter?

So check the wieght of the ebike you think you will get.

The metro area of Minnesota has an outstanding Bogleheads group. The average meeting size is around 65-100 member (group meets 4 times per year). In addition there are 2 smaller "breakout" groups that meet in the west and east (which I lead) metro area 3 or 4 times a year (are currently on pause generally do to covid).

These are great people and you could quite easily connect with people in the groups.

Re: A change in Chase Credit Card Ultimate Rewards?

Just to clarify. When I select a card - say Starbucks - Say I want to buy a gift card. The only amount for that card I can select is $10 - the $20, $30 options that used to work or now just light gray and not selectable.

I am not trying to use my card to buy a card outside of Chase. (to say get 5% off. In the past I just went to Ultimate Rewards - Selected the store or restuarant I wanted to buy the gift card from - and then select the amount I want on the card. The physical card came 3-4 weeks later. Done.

Now the only option is $10 on any Ultimate gift card.

A change in Chase Credit Card Ultimate Rewards?

I loved buying gift cards for friends and myself with cash back from Chase. Today I see that the most I can put on any card is $10. So if you want to gift someone a $50 gift card for a restaruant you have to order 5 cards. That makes little sence to me.

Is this now the new Chase policy to limit to $10 per card (physical or digital)? I see nothing on the their website about this change.

PS - I get that I can that the cash and buy gift cards with that but that is not what I want.

How are you holding up "traditional" 3 fund folks

I'm going to make a general assumption about 3 fund portfolio holders. And that assumption is that it includes something like Total Stock Market, an international fund of some sort and something akin to the Total Bond Fund. This is not about exactly what you might have.

I would like to know if you have changed anythng in your approach in the last year to date or so.

I have not. But that doesn't mean that I don't wonder about the wisdom of not make some changes.

Are you just holding on to what you have or did you make a change?

Re: Target Date Funds Underperform? Barrons says they need a closer look

2040 Is about a 80-20 AA. With lots of international as previously state. So Lifestrategy at the same AA would only prevent the AA from dropping to 30-70 eventually but would act the same at first but would not become less “risky” over time. So it would solve the reducing equity problem but not the international problem.

For what it’s worth. Mike Piper uses Lifestragy Funds (can’t remember which one) and felt (feels) somewhat uncomfortable with the amount of international.

"Not only have 2040 target-date funds lagged the index by a compounded annual average 2.4 percentage points, but they have done so without less volatility—13.6% compared with 14.9% for the S&P 500 since March 1994, according to BofA."

My wife and I purchase Ebikes last summer and enjoyed them. Aventon Brand. But a couple of very important things: 1. Some bikes are heavy and thus may cause you trouble upon stopping. If you have any balance or stability issues look carefully at weight and size. For example we purchased a medium and I bought a large. Her bike is much lighter and manageble than mine (same brand). Also, because of the weight difference, hers has more zip and better battery life (althought that last thing is no significant). Test drive for a half hour or more to test this out. 2. At intersections one has to be extra careful due to the way Ebikes motors engage. There are different systems for different bikes so look carefully to get one that has the safeest sta...

This would make the funds less volatile and provide peace of mind that he is not dependant of the market with that money. (Feeling: the money is there no matter what). Step 1: change your Masterpassword. (easy)

Recently my granddaughter sprained her ankle (plus a few other events occurred as well) that required and exam and xrays. The bill is likely to be around $2000 due to a high deductible insurance plan she is on. Her mother is a teacher in St Paul Public Schools but that insurance was expensive for covering her children (my grand daughter included). Our granddauther is claimed as a dependent on my daughters income taxes (which adds to limits on getting cheaper insurance for her.) So they went elsewhere for coverage and that means high deductable insurance. Can you think of any options to investigate here in Minnesota. Any ideas that are worth looking into. We want to purchase Ebikes and are having a devil of a time getting an interpretation of this line in Minnesota Ebike laws (on various trails) "The Ebike shall be incapable of propelling faster than 20 miles per hour." Does that mean no Class 3 bikes (which can go up to 28 miles per hour) EVEN if you set the computer screen on them to not exceed 20 MPH? Nobody wants to deal with this in shops or government. My take is because it is set to 20MPH it is at that point incapable of going faster. (Even though the bike ultimately could be set faster). The would "Class" is never used in regulation and would be much easier if it was. Laws should say "Class 2 or 1 only". But is my interpretation that a Class 3 set to not...

Re: Vanguard vs Fidelity brokerage account for my three-fund portfolio

Are you certain that the Fedility website (and company) is better the Vanguard?

I hear about Ally this and that too but still like Ally as a website and company.

How can you actually track down there track record?

I'm not saying you shouldn't use them but I always ask "how solid is the information" and is it anecdotal (based on some complains) or is it 1000's of legitimate complains and peer reviewed (if possible).

I'd love to know.
