4-8% per year isnt bad for index funds. If you are looking for 20-30% a year, traditional stock index funds are not your best bet. Seek to start a business or speculative real estate, or concentrate holdings in the right stocks.

I would invest in emerging markets. Any Experts who talk about the market have no idea if it is going up or down, or whether or not past performance or their own theories mattered. I would work long hours and do well for the first few years to set yourself apart from others. Get to the office earlier, leave later, and check email in the evenings if you can. You will usually be rewarded financially.

i cant imagine getting 5 days PTO. I can imagine asking for business class flights to aid in sleep. I have adjusted in 12-24 hours typically after intl business or first. Yes, it is a drain however, and not everyone can do this well individually. Traveling isnt for everyone,

vanguard customer service is bad, but it isnt that dept's fault i bet. When it is this bad, one has to ask if the leadership is asleep at the wheel. I have heard good things abotu ML - good luck to the OP, but consider schwab or fidelity also

outside of ransom or crime, i am not sure why money would be needed "right now" instead of tranferring from vanguard, selling taxable, etc. Having a large emergency fund 6 mos in cash or bank account seems not ideal - couldve invested the money.

vanguard has a old website and poor customer service on many fronts - you have to dig deeper, and may have to call or seek opinions on doing these things. Probably money is saved with their approach.

The wiki on tax efficient investing is flawed according to numerous threads herein, and is very dependent on capital gains and other tax rates at a later date. Do we know what those rates will be in 10 or 20 years? Consider that before taking any advice on it.

i would stay exclusively in target funds in your tax deferred. it will prevent major tinkering, its simple, and the funds do well, and autobalance. taxable may be a different story. If all you hold is target in your tax deferred until retirement, you'll be just fine.

you should just be in a 60/40 portfolio if you want to be conservative. hard to see stocks with large cap gains though. if long term, you'll be fine. Can you live with a 4-6% RETURN a year and stay the course, and accept a 20% downside? If so, 60/40 is for you.

given the indecision, i would put it in a 60/40 balanced fund. You wont go down too much, but you also benefit from gains.
