Just to be clear....you received the bonus IN the Roth account????

I mean this sounds awesome....I'm just trying to wrap my head around it and given all the IRS rules around retirement accounts I just want to make sure I don't end up fined or something.

Can any CPA's explain this?

If it were me and I was 10 years out from the cancer treatment, I would probably prioritize the plan that covers the most doctors your family uses and the hospital where you are most likely to go to for emergency care. Although it’s really lame that there is no option that includes the surgeon and hospital. Almost seems like a bait and switch. But you and your family is much more likely to need urgent/emergent care than you will need more breast surgery. And that would not typically be urgent, let alone emergent.

Re: Is anyone using cash for a discount on everyday items?

My kids almost don’t know what cash is. If they get a gift of cash, they give it to me and I transfer the same amount to their debit card. They and their friends all Venmo or Zelle each other whenever they need to split a bill or something.

I basically never carry cash anymore either. It’s only an issue if I am in a tipping situation like valet parking. Kind of awkward not to have a buck or two to hand the attendant when they bring the car. But this is a once or twice a year situation.

I do pay the cleaning folks that come to our house about every 6-8 weeks in cash. Usually the cash I’ve received from my kids.

Hmm. $70k expenses NOT including $49k housing costs or health insurance (if I understand correctly) with annual investment income of $68k and earned income of $42k seems tight. You can’t take traditional IRA distributions penalty free for 7 years. And your SS benefit estimates are probably too high as they are likely assuming that you continue working to FRA at your current income (both of you). Also, the rentals could turn upside down in a heartbeat depending on the economy and tenant situation. So to make it work I would think you would need to really look at cutting down your expenses.

Nothing wrong with investing in a taxable brokerage account. If using total stock market index funds, most dividends will be qualified and taxed at 0% or 15%. Capital Gains deferred as long as desired. In fact, for the later career person, sometimes it makes sense to reduce tax-deferred investments and go taxable instead.

I don’t know how that will impact the Apple Card going forward, but the two major benefits for having the card for me are no foreign transaction fee and that I can get cards for my college age daughters as participants on the account so they begin getting into the credit system. They each have their own unique card, which is really mostly for emergencies. I can limit the charge amount. They have some nominal monthly fees being paid via their cards (Spotify) that get paid when the monthly payment is made for the entire account. This has been great for my older daughter who has been studying abroad this semester. I tried to get her her own credit card this past summer, but with no credit history, there were no appealing options. With her as a...

A couple of quick thoughts as an early-retired MD:
First, is it realistic that you can find part time work in your specific field that would not require call/nights/weekends? And would that job have benefits (most importantly health insurance, although maybe that can be covered by spouse)? This is so dependent on your specialty. Second, depending on the ages of your children, they may be part of your expenses far longer than you are anticipating. I think it’s the expense side of the equation that matters the most.

It seems like if you enjoy using a treadmill at the gym you would enjoy one at home. And saving $70/month would pay itself off pretty quickly. I would strongly recommend trying a rowing machine at the gym for a while before getting one, if that’s an option. I got a really nice rowing machine but never really got into it like I had hoped. If it’s a tax return with W2 income, interest, dividends and capital gains +\- itemized deductions and some dependents, it would be a surprise if 50 reasonably competent tax preparers got different results. But add a schedule C, rental property or multiple K-1s, and I think there could very well be variation. Much more room for “interpretation.”

I fear problems like this are going to become much more common now that the reporting rules have changed for 1099ks. People that have been using things like Venmo to reimburse friends and family for dining, entertainment, etc are potentially going to receive 1099ks that will prompt schedule Cs or schedule 1 income that should really go unreported as non taxable income. (Well reported on schedule 1 but then deducted there as well). If not entered into the tax software correctly.

There are lots of great, walkable neighborhoods in north Seattle. And the public schools are generally better than south Seattle (and our experience with two kids was fine). Fremont, Wallingford, Green Lake, Phinney, Greenwood, Maple Leaf, Ravenna, etc. Kind of the best of being urban without a big city feel. In my neighborhood within a 5 minute walk I have a terrific family-owned grocery store, multiple restaurants, a brewery and access to one of the best public parks in the city. But it really depends on how much you would be commuting to the Eastside. If your job is almost entirely remote then living in Seattle proper is totally doable. If the Roth has been opened for 5 years AND you are older than 59 1/2, there is no tax or penalty on ANY Roth distribution. The 5 year rule for conversions no longer applies. There is a good table in the Wiki on IRAs (as a footnote) which shows which Roth distributions are taxable or subjected to penalties.

Wells Fargo for basic checking account. Many local brick and mortar locations for the infrequent need. An online bill pay platform that I find intuitive and fast (most payments in two days). Access to Zelle. Do not keep a large balance and use Schwab brokerage for the bulk of our savings/investments. It’s easy to transfer funds between Wells and Schwab. Schwab does have a great debit card which we use for foreign ATM transactions. Although I am set up with Schwab bill pay I prefer the Wells Fargo bill pay platform so far.

Re: Fidelity does not let you choose IRA contribution year

I believe the reason that your Fidelity account is not giving you the option to contribute to the IRA for 2022 is that per their records, you have already contributed the max for 2023 per your 5498. If you still had space to fill for 2022, you would be asked to specify which year you were intending to contribute to. At some point in the past, you must have unintentionally contributed the maximum in April for that year rather than the prior year, and thus the current situation.

Fidelity and Schwab are doing it as well. I don’t understand the rationale. I’m happy to be able to access certain functionality on my mobile device with an app, but there are many things that I much prefer to do on a PC/iMac with a good quality website UI. And most likely as ordinary income if these were sell to cover and are short term transactions, when in fact there is probably little or no gain. Those RSUs are included in your W2 income and have already been taxed (usually at a fixed 22% which often ends up in owing taxes, but that's a whole other problem).
