Re: Ooma Phone Service
One basic thing that I don't believe was mentioned is this; the Ooma Telo (the VoIP device) only needs the connection to the internet, it is not necessary to have a computer on in order to use it.

The transfer of the phone number from the telco to Ooma is really up to the local company. I can't remember how long it took, but it wasn't so long that it stuck in my memory. I think it was the same day.

Re: Ooma Phone Service
I have the volume levels with Ooma (a VoIP system over the internet) to be the same as a landline (over wires). I have been on an extended call as I am typing this and currently listening to the "music on hold" at surprising volume. (-: Several people have mentioned the "cost". The cost of around $6 is actually NOT for Ooma, but rather for 911. Ooma collects the 911 fee which goes to the state and the cost is regulated by the state. The Telo device is the interface to the internet and connects to the router, and this is often sold by Ooma at a discount. If you want to keep your existing phone number, there is a small one-time cost to transfer it. There is no cost for Basic service and a monthly cost for the optional Prem...

Re: Cox Voice Preferred vs OOMA-type services
I've used Ooma for about 10 years now. I have had Premier but found that Basic service is fine for me. I have been pleased with the service and the money I have saved. Here is the comparison between the two tiers;
https://www.ooma.com/home-phone/plans
The Telo Voip device connects to your existing internet router. You can use a wired phone or Dect 6 portable phones which is what I have throughout my home. I paid a one-time fee to transition my old phone number to Ooma to avoid the need to change phone numbers anywhere.
I particularly like that voicemail messages are also sent as an email attachment (mp3) so you can pick up you messages anywhere.

Re: Does Anyone Play GO?
I don't play yet but thought about learning. I was strolling through a charity resale place and spotted a full sized wood GO board, which I bought for $15. When I was checking out, I asked about the stones and was told they were sold as something to place in a flower vase. I subsequently bought stones and a book. I thought it would be best to create the book image on a real board to get the look and feel (and sound) of a real game as I learned. Well, that first step, taken alone with no guide or opponent, turned into disillusion. I concluded that learning this way might be like becoming an athlete by watching TV. Are there any interactive computer games for absolute beginners rather than IBM's AI master level?

I just bought it at Newegg, but as I was checking out it stated thanks for buying at Best Buy. All the other forms have Newegg. I thought they must have some agreement. Sure enough, I found this; "List of online stores Best Buy will price-match: Amazon.com, Apple.com, Bhphotovideo.com, Crutchfield.com, Dell.com, Frys.com, hhgregg.com, HP.com, HomeDepot.com, Lowes.com, Newegg.com, OfficeDepot.com, OfficeMax.com, Rakuten.com Shopping, Sears.com, Staples.com, Target.com, TigerDirect.com and Walmart.com."
I got it for $26.04 with IA state tax and downloaded it for Windows.
Thanks for the heads up!

I have a situation like the OP. Both of these funds were in my traditional IRA. I wanted to buy a brokered CD and didn't know if the funds would be available when I combined the cash into the Settlement fund. So I called Vanguard, which I haven't done for years. I waited until I got the option for them to call me. I was given the wait time. They called me and I had the very polite CSR combine the funds. I was told that I could make the CD purchase immediately, which I did 10 minutes before the closing bell. Total time with the CSR was 2-3 minutes. The transaction appeared this morning. I remain very pleased with Vanguard.

I had the opposite happen. I had the oil changed and the next time I tried to check the oil, I couldn't get the cap off. I took it back and the guy came out and he couldn't get it off either. They drove the car in and "worked on it". Later, they came back and said it was fixed. I paid for labor to adjust the metal blades the cap screwed into and a new oil cap. Grrr.

We eat three meals punctually, with snacks between and at bedtime. We nap when needed, play, watch nature, bask in the sun, and empty the mind through meditation, which she excels at. I read a lot, which entices her to sit on my lap. The only activity we both despise is the use of the vacuum cleaner.

I have a Shark Professional that has a suction control valve that you manually adjust. It mixes air from near the handle with air sucked in at the carpet level. The height of the brushes is automatic. I moved into my home with new carpeting and had no issues.sonosoldi3112 wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 9:37 am Shark. ( available at Costco ) & everywhere
Solid and after years of use performs as if it were new....Personally I highly recommend.
Another advantage is that you adjust the suction so you can vacuum mats such as those found in the bath without having them get sucked up and getting caught in the brush.

Re: Reluctant to give up analog Landline—VOIP suggestions wanted
A decade long user of VoIP with Ooma. No difficulties at all. It was extremely easy to set up. I used the option to move my existing phone number to Ooma, removing the need to notify anyone. I have a portable phone in every room using three base stations. The voicemail recording on Ooma is superior to those on the base station. A message is also sent as an attachment on an email message. As far as costs, Ooma basic is free. You do have to pay for emergency 911 service whether it is on a standard landline or on any VoIP service since that is provided by gov't to reach emergency departments rather than by the phone service. That total cost is $6.75/month, which I put on a credit card. One can also examine your call records, incoming and outgo...

I am in a tech group and I am currently investigating voice quality issues with someone's Ooma VoIP phone system. It turns out that Ooma is not the problem. I ran some quality of service (QOS) tests and found excessive jitter, latency, and dropped packets. The problem is not in the internet service either with fiber to the premises. The problem is with the router and will be replaced tomorrow.
I also have an Ooma Telo which I have used for about 10 years and I wouldn't part with it. The voice quality that I have is excellent and the savings are great.

The decision to self-insure for dental, may be more complex if you consider plans that include dental, vision, and hearing, depending on your needs.
One other factor I ran into with my insurance is that they do not cover anything during the first year. I was told this is because otherwise people would buy insurance only when something expensive arose and then drop it after the procedure was done.

Re: Greed and BH dogma getting the best of us?
Same here. I am way ahead of where I thought was possible. Most of my portfolio is in taxable. Now I look at rebalancing and find it difficult/impossible to pay that much in taxes. Now if I lose a lot in a downturn, I would still be way above my needs. I rationalize my decision by having an asset allocation more appropriate for my beneficiaries (children).jebmke wrote: ↑Sun Aug 29, 2021 1:34 pm I am way ahead of where I thought I'd be when I retired. But I am no longer planning to sell any equity so I expect over the long term, my equity allocation will rise. I had set a fairly low equity allocation (40%) when I first retired in December, 2007. But I changed my plan 2-3 years ago to no longer rebalance on the upside.
