If the rate in the other country is 10%, but the value of that currency compared to the US dollar drops 10%, you have earned nothing. I would not recommend putting your retirement funds at risk of currency exchange rate fluctuations. For example, it was only a few years ago that Iceland's currency became worthless.
Thanks for the input.

dumb question #1 and 2

I know that 401K deferred taxes. When we retire how much tax do we have to pay?
Plus I have heard other things like instead of investing in 401K some pay off home loans since we may get only 3% returns on 401K versus 7 percent home mortgage loan rate. Is this true?

Re: How Can I Tell If My Dentist is Good One?

My evaluation of my current dentist as positive relates to several issues: 1. He uses a dental hygienist to do cleaning, etc. I concluded that older dentists, as they become somewhat "out of date" and lose patients often do cleanings themselves. 2. He has (from my point of view) modern equipment and (it seems) modern techniques. 3. While often recommending replacement of older fillings when cracked, etc., he sometimes recommends just watching something a bit suspicious unless and until it needs to be fixed. 4. He seems to have an excellent, long time office staff. I disagree to most postings here about finding good dentists. Long term staff is indicator of good dentist!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! What's that got to do with his skill????? Wha...

Re: Completely new [Physician]

Thanks for the great responses. Due to alimony and child support I don't have much left of my income anymore. I can barely afford a 600 dollar appt. Sucks, my wife who never went to college makes more than me. I don't want to live in regret but I have long life ahead of me and try to find happiness in small things I am thankful for. We lived large during our married life, sense of entitlement. When I asked my ex to stat curbing expenses things back fired and she said I was controlling and demeaning and then everything spiraled out of control. Jealousy crept in followed by mistrust etc etc. Now I divorced to avoid life time alimony. So while this phase will be only for a short time, I still will loose valuable prime earning period!!!!! Back ...

Re: Asset protection - what do you do?

There is no real asset protection. Are you a small business owner? No matter what, a good lawyer can pierce any shield you put up. I have tried this before, the only real way you can do this is by transferring all funds to off shore accounts that don't respond to US laws like ST.Kitts etc. Beyond that, if money or assets sit in US you can be assured you will loose. Don't waste money on lawyers. Its easy to break corporate shields, if you took even one penny out for personal use from corporate accounts you will loose in a lawsuit.

Completely new [Physician]

Hi,
I am completely new to this. I only invest in Edward Jones office 401K. I have no other investments. Where to start? Just divorced few weeks ago. ex got half my portfolio of 120K.
Soooooo. I have two boys. I am 38 years old and a doctor.
Do I need to invest if I max out my 401K? I need help putting money away for my boys college about 200K per kid.
My parents have lots of funds in real estate but that will be awhile before I can get that.
Do I have to pay taxes while investing in 401K beyond my allowable amount?
