Not putting down EVs, or stoking negative sentiment about them, just posting a humorous story related to a real world inconvenience of an ev. More of a “criminals can be idiots” type thing. An ice car would have been refueled and gone in 5 minutes. Plus a smart criminal would have committed the crime on a topped off charge.

Why do you need to roll it over? If you do, you can’t do backdoor Roth’s going forward. Plus you might lose some creditor protection. If you have reasonable expenses in the 401k, you might just keep it there. If you have plenty of other investments, you invest it according to your overall asset allocation, with bonds going in the 401k as much as possible.

You can roll the 2 traditional iras together for simplification, but you might lose some bankruptcy protection for the rollover account. Additionally, you might consider a solo 401k to enable backdoor Roth in the future. Once you create the solo 401k, rolling the rollover and pretax portion of the trad ira into it and then rolling the post tax portion into the Roth might be best.
But 3 accounts at one brokerage is hardly a mess, it’s very easy to keep track of multiple accounts these days.

1. A backdoor Roth does not count as a withdrawal.
2. You both can do a 60 day withdrawal and replacement, as it is an INDIVIDUAL retirement arrangement. Remember that they will withhold 10% so you need to come up with that from elsewhere to return to the ira.
As an aside, you shouldn’t be doing backdoor Roth’s if you have a trad ira. See pro rata rule.

Perhaps it was considered an excess contribution distribution because he was not vested? I think this is code P on the 1099R.
Another reason for the distribution is that many plans won’t let you keep money in them if it is less than 5k, and they send you a check that should be rolled over to an ira within 60 days.
An error in entering info in the software seems likely as I know of no 1k waiver on 401k early withdrawals.

https://thefinancebuff.com/transfer-mon ... -pull.html
When you transfer money between two accounts you own, if you have a choice between push and pull, push, don’t pull.
This is because when you push, the sending bank knows how much money you have. It lets you push only if you have enough money in your account. When the money arrives at the receiving account, the receiving bank treats it as good funds because the sending bank already verified you have enough money before sending it. There’s no hold on the money pushed in

the basic requirement is that the name of the deceased IRA owner must remain in the account title. So, if Jim Smith dies with an IRA, the titling might read “Jim Smith, IRA, deceased, date of death, for the benefit of — or FBO — Jim Smith Jr., the son.” And that’s how it stays for the entire rest of Jim Smith Jr.’s life. But if Jim Smith Jr. jumps the gun or puts it in his own name, the whole thing is taxable, and that mistake can’t be fixed.

Why do you think there is not still one million in the account? From bogleheads wiki. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Dividend Dividend distributions are accumulated in the fund's NAV all year long. Then when paid, the fund is reduced by that dividend amount. (This is not true of most Vanguard bond funds, as noted above. See Net asset value (NAV) for more detail.) If dividends are reinvested, then you simply receive additional shares that equal the dividend amount times the number of shares you already owned. The distributions can be considered as a bookkeeping tool to get stock dividends and bond interest income off the books and out to investors either by reinvestment in additional shares or as a cash payment. Re: Roth IRA limits after marriage
It’s on a tax year basis. She will file single for 2022, so she can do regular Roth, but for 2023 she will need to do backdoor as she will file mfj.
Also, in case you were wandering about filing separately, she would still need to do backdoor (assuming you live together).

The need for a broker is much less now that you can compare prices easily at Medicare.gov

Re: Roth IRA limits after marriage
She will need to do the backdoor Roth as well, assuming she has no trad or sep ira. The mfj limit is 228k. The max contribution is 6500 for this less than 50.
