Re: Would Robo Advisor replace index fund and passive invest

People had this debate already over a century ago. Google "the Socialist Calculation Debate." They were talking about running an economy rather than picking stocks, but they both require a central entity to somehow have more accurate information than can be gleaned from free market prices....

Re: Why Buying a *New* Car Makes Sense? Please help!

HardSphere and others, why would you compare 2 different holding periods when comparing new vs used? A person buying a 5 year old car can just as easily hold a car for 10 years as a person who purchases a new car. It seems more of an apples to apples comparison for both to buy/hold for ten years an...

Re: Why Buying a *New* Car Makes Sense? Please help!

I don't have time to do the exact calculation, but consider this: Assuming that you would drive both the new car and the CPO car until they both were the same old age (e.g. 10 years old), then the savings of a CPO could be a wash, because you will end up buying a greater number of cars over your lif...

Re: Do you have and auto loan?

I just purchased a car with an auto loan last month. I was planning to wait to pay cash on the particular car I wanted, but the 1996 Oldsmobile I was driving died sooner than expected. Given that I am pretty used to driving cars into the ground, I thought it was a better idea to buy the car I wanted...

Re: Recruiters asking for current compensation

To clarify, all of these recruiters work for the companies that I am interviewing with and in all cases they reached out to me. Thanks @tylerdurden for the suggestion to think in terms of expected ranges. That makes this more stomach-able and makes me feel like I'd have more leverage when it comes ...

Re: Best job offer: startup vs spinoff?

Just some non-financial things to consider: Don't over-estimate the value of being a "key" employee. The value of being important and early depends on what the exit strategy of the founders is. If they want to go public, then you might be able to stay there indefinitely, because you're a k...

Re: Best Business Start-up?

I am looking to start a business. At this point I am throwing darts a wall to see what sticks. What will have the lowest risk/highest return? I have researched and analyzed these businesses to death. Here are my business ideas. Tell me what you think would be a great business? I have 20k to invest....

Re: Evaluating new job offer and 401k plan

I recently made a career change that is opposite that of the one that the OP is considering. That is, I spent the last few years in a start-up (which was my first job out of college), and now I'm working at an established company. I'm also a bit older than the OP (I'm about to turn 30). The other po...

Re: Recommended Adventure PC Video Games?

A question for the Adventure game players. Do you think a 40 somthing dad would be able to play a game like The Last Express as noted above with his 14 year old son? We have a computer that we use as a DVR on the big screen with a wireless keyboard/mouse, for that matter maybe the rest of the famil...

Re: US Government Securities

I think your professor is an idiot. Of course bonds are used as debt instruments to finance current spending. Where does the professor think the money comes from to cover the budget deficit? If we take in a trillion dollars less annually then we receive in tax revenue, where does this money come fr...

Re: Put Infinite Money in a Roth IRA

No I think he means to actually take opposite positions, such as a long and short position of the same security so if one goes up the other goes down. It would have to be something very volatile so that it doubles within a year from one of the positions. Well, the opposite positions part I think is...

Re: Put Infinite Money in a Roth IRA

This strategy is insane and somewhat confusing. I mean, it took me a while to actually understand the premise behind it and why it might be a terrible idea (besides needless complexity and transaction costs), and I'm not sure if I still do. The underlying idea is that trades on the market are like a...

Re: Recommended Adventure PC Video Games?

I grew up playing adventure games back when they were still regularly made, and one I particularly enjoyed which may be aligned to your tastes is not listed here: The Last Express. Although a lot of the artwork is hand-drawn, giving a sort of "cartoony" look to the characters, they were pr...
