Just wondering if there was anything you could add to help me understand why you think this year's sizable premium increase (as Mass Mutual exits writing new LTC business) might be the last premium increase for me?
As always, I am grateful for any information you can provide. Kind Regards, Patricia MG-er

Re: Mass Mutual LTC Policy: Premium Increases + Exit from Indiv Market
WOW - I believe I understand each different policy series has its own claims experience. I'll double check with my state Insurance Commission to determine which groups were included in their rationale for the latest premium increase.
What I am still having difficulty understanding is why this would probably be my final premium increase. Believe me, I want that to be true! I'd appreciate more information on why you believe that is likely.
Thanks to all the Bogleheads who are taking the time to respond. I am very grateful.

WoW2012 Thank you for taking the time to provide information; I really appreciate it. I'd like to explore one of your comments more--because it is the key point for me. You stated: " patricia: If healthy people decide not to renew & they're not selling any new policies, does that mean my premiums will rise faster in the future (despite my good health)? wow: No your premiums will not rise faster. In fact, this will probably be the only rate increase you ever receive. wow: why do you think healthy people would decide not to renew? it's a great policy, a great company, and even with the rate increase it is a great value. your policy can't be beat by anything on the market today. Mass Mutual LTC Policy: Premium Increases + Exit from Indiv Market
Sorry for another one of those "should I continue my traditional LTC insurance policy" questions. The premium increase in my state was 33% (after several years of no premium increases). I already considered this coverage fully priced, because it was purchased in 2019 after many of the industry-wide rate increases had been implemented. I was told Mass Mutual will no longer be selling the individual, traditional LTC policies, so my LTC agent no longer has a relationship with them. 1. How will Mass Mutual's decision to exit selling these policies impact on my potential experience for (i) future rate increases, and (ii) claims processing? If healthy people decide not to renew & they're not selling any new policies, does that mean ...

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
neurosphere: have you tried Stillwater for umbrella coverage? GEICO uses them for HO and renters' policies, but the GEICO agent won't quote Stillwater's rates on any coverage GEICO itself offers. [I don't have any experience with Stillwater's claims-paying experience.] I usually run my coverages past an independent insurance agent who is able to check with many insurance companies all at once. Good Luck.

Rudy5: I'd suggest asking an independent agent for stand-alone umbrella quotes from companies such as Stillwater. [GEICO won't offer information on coverages competing with their own offerings even from companies that they act as agent for renters, HO, etc.] IMPORTANT: I have no claims experience with Stillwater, so ask that independent agent for their opinions on any company they quote you. Good Luck.

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
I have been told that Stillwater (the company which writes my HO policy through an affiliation with GEICO) offers umbrella coverage at lower premiums. I have no personal claims experience with them however. [Online comments have criticized Stillwater's underwriting of HO for newly purchased homes--cancelling after getting property details so that homeowners need to scramble to get HO coverage in time for the closing, etc. I haven't seen any information on claims processing generally, though.]
Does anyone have experience with Stillwater on umbrella coverage??? TIA for any information. Patricia MG-er

Rob5TCP: Thanks for posting your experience. 1. It's interesting that GEICO's umbrella will drop down to the more limited auto coverage you now have. That's good to know. Are the policy coverage limits still the same as your previous auto policy--and it's just priced lower because it applies only for rented or borrowed vehicles? 2. I was told that STILLWATER (from whom I get my HO policy through GEICO) also writes umbrella coverage. GEICO won't quote a competitor in a line they actually write (they don't offer HO), but apparently Stillwater is more reasonable than GEICO on its umbrella policies. I have never had to use my coverage, so I don't know about Stillwater's claims performance. I do note that there are online comments to the effect ...

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
MtnTravel: Thanks so much for your feedback. I'd prefer to have all coverages under one roof too. I contacted an independent insurance agent who came back with the Stillwater quote which is almost 40% less than the GEICO quote. Their financial strength seems to be ok, but there are online complaints about homeowners' coverage (mainly Stillwater canceling policies because of physical attributes of the home)--which aren't relevant to an umbrella but which are concerning. It boggles my mind that a standalone umbrella quote is so much lower than GEICO's--unless Stillwater will raise the premium next year. I'm also verifying that the terms of the coverage are the same. Any experience/rumors/etc. from any Bogleheads concerning Stillwater on umbre...

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
My latest GEICO umbrella quote in Nevada went up about 30%. I'm told I'm in preferred tier & after I went back with a lower quote, the very polite agent said no better price available from GEICO.
An insurance agent is recommending Stillwater. That is the agency GEICO placed my renters' insurance with during the last few renewals. I have seen online complaints about their claim process.
Any thoughts/experience with Stillwater??? TIA for any input. Patricia Mg-er

Re: Medicare Involuntarily Transferring Original Medicare Participants to ACOs????
Thanks so much for the responses so far. I personally am concerned because (like another poster) my primary care doctor is someone I rarely see because I do take responsibility to try to stay healthy. I visit an eye doctor several times a year, however. I paid up for original Medicare because of wanting flexibility to see providers if an issue arises when I travel in the US and because I don't want any limits on my care if I ever have a serious accident/illness. I don't want to get into any political issues, but I haven't seen much substantive disclosure from the CMS or otherwise (like AARP or KFF.org) of exactly how these ACOs will work once they are rolled out to all participants. I am encouraged that participants currently in ACOs seem t...

Re: Medicare Involuntarily Transferring Original Medicare Participants to ACOs????
Thanks very much for the responses. Orlandoman & others who are in ACOs as part of traditional Medicare: my earlier question wasn't very clear. I apologize. What I'm interested in is whether, if you choose to see a provider outside the ACO group, (1) do you need to get the ACO's permission or a referral, and (2) if you go to someone outside the ACO, do the traditional Medicare/Medigap reimbursement rules apply? I wasn't asking about the 3-day rule re: skilled nursing home admission.

Medicare Involuntarily Transferring Original Medicare Participants to ACOs????
I read an article on M* this morning which appears to state that participants in traditional (original) Medicare [which has operated as a pay-for-service plan] will be transitioned into Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) starting next year. All participants are expected to be transitioned into an ACO by the end of the decade. https://www.morningstar.com/articles/1088562/big-changes-may-be-coming-to-traditional-medicare?utm_source=eloqua&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_morningdigest&utm_content=35745 The article raises the important point that with more physician groups being acquired by financial firms, there will be a strong profit-maximizing incentive for these ACOs. Re: [Cashed-in EE bonds - How are taxes handled?]
Sorry for resurrecting this older thread, but I have a basic question on Taxation of EE Bonds which I didn't see answered elsewhere. I have electronic EE savings bonds at TreasuryDirect.gov. They were converted from paper bonds, issued in 10/1992 which each had a face value of $5K but which I believe were purchased for $2.5K each. The TD page lists bond as $5K, and market value as $20,328. Is it possible the basis was increased when they were converted? --I can't see any reference to what I think was the original purchase price on TD documents from the conversion or now. 1. What will my 1099 show as interest when each bond is redeemed (which I understand happens automatically at TD)? 2. Does the "Bonds for Education" program still...

Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
I think Electric Insurance (which I have read was started in the 60's to provide coverage to GE employees) is still owned by GE Capital. Apparently it has an "A" rating from AM Best. Glancing at the website, it looked as if the auto insurance was pricey. If they offer standalone umbrella coverage, however, I will look at them during my next renewal. Part of the reason I've kept GEICO on is because it's hard to find umbrella coverage unless you move your home/auto policies to the provider as well. This is an interesting alternative I personally had not heard of before. Thanks for all of the responses sharing your experiences. It makes all of us better consumers.

I would prefer an attractively-priced emerging market index which excludes State Owned Enterprises. I know Wisdom Tree has an XSOE ETF, but I was wondering if there were any rumblings that Vanguard was considering an ex-SOE emerging market fund. Re: GEICO Umbrella: Significant Increase in Premium
Absolutely no claims against umbrella. I personally have never had a claim where my insurance had to pay out on ANY of my policies (other than one tow) for over 4 decades; back then, it was a claim on H/O policy for an off-premises jewelry theft. But, I know a couple who had to access their umbrella in a car accident case where the other party was seriously injured. Given the costs of long-term rehab/assisted living, those judgments can be large. If people have assets that can be accessed to satisfy a judgment, I still think umbrella coverage makes sense (although it's possible I've been brainwashed by the industry) It used to be so inexpensive--it felt like a no-brainer. YMMV

That's interesting about RLI. I know GEICO has been referring out homeowners'/renters' insurance to Travelers, Clearwater, etc.--I didn't realize they were doing that for umbrella coverage too. Yes - the bizarrely large percentage increase in my Nevada premium (and I am also someone who wouldn't appear to pose much underwriting risk either) is what prompted me to post in the first place. OTOH, Flobes' increase was in line with what I had experienced for many years--a miniscule premium increase. I don't know what state Flobes is in. Another poster noted that GEICO was playing "catch up" with premiums in some states. In any event, thanks to all for posting your experiences. As noted in my earlier post, I experienced a huge increase in my umbrella premium in Nevada as well. I had no claims under auto, home or umbrella policies and have been a customer for years. I want to point out that, in my case, the Nevada terms and conditions changed substantially at the same time the premium increased--IMO resulting in less coverage in many situations. If you have a GEICO renewal, I suggest you look at any policy changes as well. Good luck to us all in finding better coverage. Regards, Patricia MG-er

I should mention in my state, GEICO's umbrella does not cover Uninsured Motorist. I have 1 home, 1 car, no other persons driving & no recent claims (no at-fault accidents ever--I think--under my GEICO auto). I remain mystified by the doubling of the premium after years of smaller increases.
I tried getting higher limits on my GEICO auto & that didn't work. My agent is looking at that strategy when shopping for new coverage, however
Thanks for the valuable information.

As to the comment about RLI, is the GEICO umbrella policy written in that firm's name? [My HO policy--while placed through GEICO--was written on either Travelers or Stillwater. But the umbrella always seemed to be written as if GEICO was insuring it. I don't know if they reinsured with another firm of course.]
